Jewell: Carson Not Back in Best Shape
Jewell: Carson Not Back in Best Shape
Tuesday, 16th Aug 2011 08:28

Blues boss Paul Jewell says midfielder Josh Carson didn’t come back from the close season in as “good a shape as he possibly should have done”. Even so, talks have begun with the 18-year-old Northern Ireland international regarding a new contract with his current terms up next June.

Jewell said: “His contract is up in the summer and Josh is one who has come back in not as good a shape as he possibly should have been. That is ongoing. The owner is speaking with his agent again.

“Josh has got a little bit to prove. Josh burst on the scene last year and scored a couple of goals in one of his first games, then missed training the next day, scored again, and did very well.

“He’s come back, he’s probably had expectations, he’s probably had people blowing in his ear about this that and the other and he just needs to knuckle down, concentrate on his football and we can talk about his contract in the not too distant future.”

Meanwhile, the Town manager says he’s no nearer to adding a third keeper to his squad: “The news is that the search goes on.”

I thought he played well on Saturday - so if that's below par he will have a lot to offer in the future. To be honest I think some of the comments PJ makes are very clever in so much as they are designed to encourage players to work for there money and contracts! Work hard Josh and the rest will follow!

Just a little public telling off to remind him he's needs to work hard. Good stuff.

He looked really sharpe to me on Saturday. Hopefully Carson, Martin and JET can all fight each other for a place in the team, it will be a healthy competition for places. I hate how our fans don't give players the time to adjust, you all did it with Priskin and now I can see you all doing it with JET. show them support.

What was it Jewell said when we got rid of the fitness coach? Something along the lines of "These players are professionals, they all know how to look after themselves". hmmmmm.

No doubt somebody letting him know what his worth is (sh*t stirring).
Head down arse up Josh, you have a bright future in the game if you apply yourself in the right manner.
New fitness coach please PJ.

To my eyes, JET is the one who looks unfit, but that will come with training and games.

In better shape than JET. Clearly PJ can't see this - then again it's taken him almost EIGHT months to realise that playing 4-5-1 at home is ineffective and that it's driving fans away from PR.

Slips my mind now who, but i remember reading recently of another young ITFC player saying that he came back a little out of shape as no one really guided him and told him what to do over the summer. These are young lads that feel that they have "made it" and can easilly go off the boil. I think the younger players need a bit more managing to keep them grounded and focussed.

PJ was brought in to keep us up. He did it. Would you rather us be in league one?

Hopefully Carson can focus and get fit, as he has been excellent just about every time I have seen him, including Saturday when he came on.

Let's play JET behind Chopra or close to him tonight, as we can't leave Chopra isolated again. I don't like 4-5-1 at home either, although at least with Cresswell and Edwards we have attacking full-backs, whereas with Keane's 4-5-1 he played four centre backs. Those really were the dark days.

Going to be a top quality player, sign him up!!!

From watching on Saturday we needed someone playing off Chopra, someone in midfield to pass the ball and a more experienced/capable central defender.

JET or Priskin look ideal to play with Chopra. As long as the crowd give them a chance to settle.

Can Andrews be the calm passing player in midfield? On Saturday we wasted the ball and gave away possession far to easily.

Too much guiness over the close season lol. He looked good Saturday, just needs to be professional off the pitch, but this will come with age.

IPSWICH IS THE BEST

im sorry mate but your idea of a 4-2-3-1 formation is basically and would be in a match 4-5-1 this is ipswich managed by paul jewell not pep gaurdiola managing barca!! jeees
yet again churchmans speeks truth and facts

Josh is keen as mustard, takes people on, tackles hard and shoots too. He must replace Leadbitter on the right of midfield. It was like Groundhog Day last night watching Leadbitter reminded me of when Magilton played Garvan wide with disastrous consequences. Lee Martin gave the ball away a lot when he came on last night as well. Pick Carson for the Peterborough game, as for him being out of condition look at the state of some of the old codgers currently playing in our side at the moment. He's young, fit and has bags of energy.
