Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management
Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26

Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.

Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.

“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”

The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.

“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.

“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”

Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.

“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.

“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”

Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.

“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

that was possibly one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. the worrying thing is that the players didnt seem to care. barring cresswell, whilst he didnt have a good game, was obviously aware he was being publicly humiliated and actually tried and stockdale who was absolutly brilliant whilst conceding 7 goals, the players were seemingly happy to trot around being abysmal and collect their wages which they shouldnt be allowed to take.
as with most people i've had enough, im not going to spend my hard earned money watching that pile of gash. i cant understand it, i would have felt absolutly humiliated no matter who i played for, no-one on that pitch apart from the above-mentioned deserved to be anywhee=ew near that shirt. and now which player on their right mind is going to come here? it was disgusting. i really really fear for this club

Bad as we were, 4 of their first 5 goals shouldn't have been given and Martin should not have been sent off (in fact I would have been proud of that tackle).

4everblue,
lets stop making excuses, our defence sucks. we were outclassed by Peterborough Utd from start to finish.
Delaney, Smith, Ainsley, Leadbitter should never play for this club again. Embarrassment. Leadbitter should be got rid of straight away,- he epitomises everything that is wrong with this club.
Thank God for Stockdale. What a great keeper!
No Smith or Martin against Leeds due to suspensions. Will be Delaney and Ainsley (Laurel and Hardy) with no Civelli to come in for Martin. Edwards to be made a laughing stock out of at right-back too.
PJ- We seriously need to keep the score down on this one please. 5 at the back (if possible) with 4 across midfield and leave Chopra upfront on his own.

Jewell must go. He's had since January 2011 to sort out the defence and midfield as he knew GM and DN were leaving. Where are the signings?! I made the trip today and it was as if there was only one team playing. Jewell leave now!!!!

We must try not to lose heavily against Leeds. If we lose 2-0 I will be happy.
Ultra Defensive tactics please.
This whole club is just utter rubbish.

We seem to have Derby's Paul Jewell in charge, need a new manager asap.

For all you calling for Jewell out, you need to think about who really is to blame here. If Jewell goes he'll be replaced by another man who can't sort this mess out and you'll inevitably be calling for his head by Christmas. It's not that simple.

If you look at any positive aspects today, or tuesday or otherwise we have Chopra, JET, Andrew's two goals, Cresswell and some excellent keeping from Stockdale despite the fact he's been completely hung out to dry by his defence. We're lucky Martin Jol doesn't call him back! I struggle to find many more positives other than Bullard's performances of last year for the last few years. I think Jewell is making slow progress and most of the positives we can draw from this game come from him. Many also will argue that Martin looks better since being re-called. Although Jewell made some poor decisions (Edwards at right back) he's also made some very good ones.

The long and short is that no matter how much you train them to do it well, players of Delaney's ability and Smith's confidence just are not good enough. We've finally got a manager who is using Marcus Evans' money wisely and still burdened by the mistakes of Magilton and Keane who, on the whole, didn't use it so well. Calling to sack him will make us no progress. Jewell is looking for players that will bring us quality, not players such as Leadbitter, Delaney, quinn, scotland, healy and all the others who have turned out to not have that ability needed for the prem. Not to mention players such as Walters and maybe even Bruce who did have the ability who we let go and failed to replace properly under Keane.

Delaney isn't being caoched to run 20 yards into tackles he's never going to win, Smith isn't being coached to miss simple headers and tackles. To me this looks like a defence on its way out with a manager striving to find the right quality to push the club forward, not just any old player who looks like he might do the job or lots of average players like his predecessors. Please don't lose faith in him yet. He hasn't had the time or money to buy a whole new starting 11, that's what we need, that's not realistically going to come overnight or even over the summer. I don't want to bail him out, but don't call for his head already, forgetting Norwich and Swansea (who both went up, let's not forget) we improved no end with him.

Don't blame the manager, blame the lazy, inept, deadwood from previous eras waiting to be replaced.

Roy Keane must be laughing his dick off...what a total shambles, all confidence is now gone Division 1 here we come :(

Also, this time last year had this happened, Keane would have blamed everyone but himself. Jewell is doing the exact opposite, he's being completely honest, and as many of you have pointed out, he managed Derby, who knows what its like to be humiliated. Magilton was laways the same, it was never his fault. I'd rather have a manger who admits his mistakes and is clearly looking to change things than another who likes to receive his paycheck and just blame the players, the ref, the fans and anyone else.

Joe Royle once said he could get us up on a million pounds, sometimes I wish we'd been less impatient, when Marcus Evans turned up just maybe he'd have fulfilled that promise. Please this time, humiliating as this was today, be patient, no long term change will happen through short term sackings.

We need to make wholesale changes against Leeds Utd I'm afraid. Continously playing Delaney and Ainsley isn't going to help us in our fight against relegation.
Stockdale,
Peters, O'Connor, Delaney (only because we have to- He is a donkey), Cresswell
Drury, Andrews, Hyam, Griffiths,
Chopra, Priskin
Still don't think we will win, but I would take a nice 1-1 right now.
Roy Keane must be laughing and laughing. What a state he has left this club in. Getting rid of Paul Jewell right now would be stupid,- he's trying to get rid of the damage done by Keane.
Norwich fans are laughing at us too. What a total joke we have become.

It will be damage limitation against Leeds. We know we can't win, but if we can keep down the score it will be a good thing.
I still think we have enough to be 4th from bottom at the end of the season (maybe I will be crucified for being overly optimistic-but what the hell!!)

Message to Damien Delaney, Tommy Smith and Grant Leadbitter; Please refuse to take your weeks wages please. You do not deserve them.

Message to Carlos Edwards; Please take half of your wages this week as you do not deserve a full weeks worth.

Message to the club as a whole; please refund the fans who made the trip to watch you today. Most if not a huge majority are hard working, loyal FOOTBALL fans who just want to be entertained at the very least and you have let them down severely. For a good few years now you have charged them prices that do not justify the quality of football we are seeing.

If I performed like that in my job over a period of 7 days I'd have been sacked, no questions asked.

Paul Jewell, I don't blame you for this mess, yet. But you need to go out and spend some money now. Loan players won't do what you need them to I'm afraid. You need to rid this club of some money grabbing b3llends who think it's ok to just turn up and run around, keeping themselves fit, and not really caring about what the result is.

Rant over.

From Wiki when PJ got promotion at Bradford

After a poor start to the season, when City won just one of its first seven games, City picked up momentum and were second behind Sunderland for most of the latter half of the season

As an Irish Ipswich supporter, I want to apologise to everyone for the shambles that was Damien Delaney today. The one small outfield glimmer of hope could be Keith Andrews, who has been a classy (if underused) international. He could really help the balance of the team in the longer term. Of course he is on loan, as is our decent goalkeeper, such is our strategy.

Today was painful. It was a old pain, similar to Old Trafford, and something I have seldom felt from supporting Ipswich for 40 years. I am numb with anger and shock after witnessing what was simply the worst Ipswich defending performance I have ever seen.

Im as hacked of as the next man on here but we have got to calm down, All this talk of sacking Jewell is ludicrous and I think is heat of the moment stuff.Martins sending of was an appalling piece of refereeing he clearly took the ball and the player was of the field of play.Smiths sending off was a sending off but he was only put in that position because the rest of our defense and our midfeild parted like the red sea and scattered like frightened birds because the ball went to near them,he was left high and dry and this time the blame just cant be laid at his door,he has no confidence and he has to shore up what is already an absolute shower but it was outside the box.the officials at this game were as poor as our defense as on bbc1 tonight it clearly showed also that there 2nd and 3rd goals were a good yard ofside.ALL that aside we were an absolute shower and if we dont have at least 2 points after the blackpool game on the 10th september then it would be time for a change of management. We will have new players (2 cbs,1creative midfielder and a partner for chopra) a 13 day break from competitive games and time for everyone to calm down and get their heads straight. One more thing 2 seasons ago the budgies got thumped 7-0 on the first day of the season they are now in the premiership so it can be done.

Just like the players, the fans are also clueless at present. Some of the suggested remedies on here are astonishing. Its been a dreadful week but lets be careful what we wish for.The kneejerk reactions wont solve anything.Im baffled as to why G mc hasnt been properly replaced as there is no commanding leader out there but we have a proper football manager in charge at the mo who will sort it, i hope to god its sorted quickly. With Smith suspended and Ainsley nowhere near up to it surely PJs hand is forced this week.We hav the personnel in the other departments of the side to turn this nightmarish start around.

chepstowblue, well said, but I think the problem is we have too many new players in the team and ok we have had a shocking week, but we have known we were deficient in certain areas and this has not been addressed. The players are obviously timid and nobody today took responsibility. To be fair to Ainsley CB is not his position, but I think we need 2 CB's by next weekend, loaned or otherwise. I really think Shane o'Connor should have been given another chance but only Cresswell has performed at the back for us so far. I trust PJ and things will get better. keep the faith people...even when it's tough!!

We need men playing for our club, not boys.
The Ipswich Team of the late 70's/early 80's would walk all over this side. Mick Mills would never have let us go down 7-1.
20-0 against that side,- with Stockdale playing a stormer.
Get some courage lads- that was appalling. COYB! Come on you caged Tigers! (more like scared little pussycats..)

Our defence is a disgrace (Stockdale and Cresswell are not included in this- you are fit to wear the shirt).
Leeds strikers must be looking forward to Saturday. If you can score enough against Ipswich, it might get you the Golden Boot. I would be aiming to score 4 against Ainsley/Delaney and co.
Edwards isn't a rightback. I hope PJ realises this now after MONTHS and MONTHS of us telling him. Edwards is a solid winger, play him in that role before his confidence is shot to pieces 2.
If Stockdale is recalled we will get TRULY hammered by teams. Hang our heads in shame as a club (the players always do so lets follow suit)

IMO- out of 10 against Peterborough

Stockdale- 10
Edwards- 3
Cresswell- 7
Delaney- 2
Ainsley- 0
Leadbitter- 2
Andrews- 7
Carson- 4
Smith- 0
Martin- 6
JET- 4
Kennedy- 5
Chopra- 8
Ellington- 4

Stockdale was our MOM. It would be touch and go between McCann, Boyd, Tomlin and Taylor for them.

I think this is different to Norwich and their defeat at Colchester. Norwich had the nucleus of a very good side. sadly, we don't. We are disjointed all over the pitch and lack leadership everywhere. Leadbitter was the captain, was he even noticed?
