Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26
Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.
Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.
“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”
The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.
“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.
“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”
Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.
“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.
“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”
Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.
“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

If the club have any sense of decency they will give all the supporters who went to the game a full refund (inc travel expenses). Leadbitter is not captain material and never will be.Delaney and Smith are just not good enough - we need to get 2x quality centre backs. We badly need some creativity in the middle.I know this is no different to what everyone else is saying but address these issues and we will see improvements COYB

maybe norris , mac , brown , and co did the right thing. We now need players with balls the size of melons out there. If we had given every last drop of sweet and still lost i will take the slap on the chin. It makes me wounder what Evans motives are at the club ie the lithuanian bloke at Hearts.Who actually runs and picks the team?

Just a thought, but if the linesman was remotely competent we go into half time at 1-1 and with 11 players. Perhaps a different game? Please stop defending Cresswell by the way. His positioning was appalling all game. Nowhere near good enough. Completely sucked inside for their equaliser and seemed to be marking one of our players. All good teams are built on a solid defence and we have no leader back there. Leadbitter. Please go. You don't want or deserve to wear the shirt.

No more discussion we've been saying it all summer... 2 new CBs and a RB. Just do THAT for now at least!!!!
Pagan_Blue added 11:39 - Aug 21
Physically, we're powder-puff weak, shrugged off the ball all over the pitch. As with Southampton on Tuesday night, yesterday we were again second best for virtually every 50:50 tackle. Jewell must give a chance to the likes of Healey, Drury, Hyam, and Peters, because they surely can't do any worse.
4everblue added 11:45 - Aug 21
Yup. Peters at full back, Hyam or Healy in front of the back 4 to give them protection. Will improve things, but with no leadership there we're still not going anywhere except down. Perhaps Marcus Evans and Clegg should play as centre backs against Leeds.

After the southampton game I said there was no need for panic on getting a CB in quickly after that debacle I say there is! infact both CB's and a right back and get Leadbitter out, if we're still getting hammered then we're playing league 1 football next season - simple as that!

I know we are all entitled to our opinions but how on earth can people be promoting Peters as a full back - you obviously did not see the Northampton match where his performance was nothing short of useless. The guy needs to find pastures new but doubt that will happen with 2 years of his contract to run on no doubt huge wages - another massive Keane blunder. There are stll too many inept players at the Club and PJ has a massive job on his hands as he has been telling us. Smith, Delaney, Leadbitter (and I have stuck up for the latter 2 until now) have to be moved on with hungry replacements. I was impressed with PJ for what he did last season but now having serious doubts about his team selection and tactics. Very dark days for ITFC.

Why are people still making excuses for PJ? If this had have been Roy or Jim - people would be (rightly) shouting and screaming for them to be sacked. I can NEVER rememeber such a poor run of results ... SEVEN defeats in our last NINE; we have conceded FIVE GOALS TWICE, FOUR GOALS TWICE and now SEVEN GOALS. It's humiliating and embarrassing. When are you people finally going to realise that PJ is a very very poor manager - not only has he been trying to destroy the club with some of the most negative tactics I have seen, but good god - the results are beyond abysmal. To read that people think he can 'turn this round' is nothing short of laughable. He needs to be sacked, along with Clegg. It amazes me that people think Clegg is doing a good job as well! Just two fees agreed all Summer and one when Clegg was on holiday. This has nothing to do with ME having to dig deep into his pockets - it's about Clegg and PJ failing to attract/traget the right players and inability of Clegg to finalise the deals. ME has to sort this out. I told you all that PJ would ruin this club (as he did at Derby) and sure enough his results are worse that Roys! Why didn't PJ address the defence?? Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear. JEWELL OUT!

This is rather like the Bryan Gunn problem. A management confidence problem. Are they with him or against him?

I dont know if it was football suicide or stupidity that we knew one of key central defenders was leaving so we let Tro Brown depart as well. Leaving one first choice centre back and two guys that have been out on loan and struggled so big question marks over them. Why oh why did sick note from Reading seem to be a good option rather than look to the lower leagues, scotland and abroad for a good solid centre back who would be happy to come to us, see it as a step up and most importantly be a smaller transfer fee as the Premiership and rich championship clubs look to household names like Matthew Upson etc. But this has been the whole problem with the club in the summer, spend all day looking at the obvious. Players looking for one final last good pay day, see the pound signs and dont care what the shirt is. Well suprise suprise with our budget we signed none of them. When oh when will our owner and cheif exec wake up and look at other successful clubs with a stature similar to ours. The shower from up the road beat us home and away on course to promotion, why for the love of god did they not think hang on a minute what are they doing we are not?? OH YES they look to players who see a move to Norwich as a step up, proud to wear the shirt, proud to run tackle and give a 100% for 90 minutes for the club. Other clubs such as Leeds and our victors last night have followed the same lead. With a small wage budget and no big transfer fund there are three things to do, look to your youth system, buy from the lower leagues and tap unknown talent from abroad. We are failing on all fronts, but remember when we did consult these sources rather that sit looking at premiership journey men.

Stowtractorboy: I did see the Northampton match and agree that Peters was poor. I also saw the home leg against Arsenal when he was outstanding, my point being that he hasn't been given much of chance, whereas the likes of Leadbitter, Edwards and Delaney( the fact that there's no-one to replace him with makes that situation ridiculous) are mediocre week in, week out, but never seem to get dropped.I also thought that Drury was outstanding in the first half against Northampton and Hyam and Healey did nothing wrong, but they were inexplicably subbed at half time. But as you rightly say, it's all a matter of opinion.

What happened to the team spirit, drive, energy, skill, hard work and running that beat Arsenal in the Carling Cup in January at PR ? Southampton and Peterborough are not THAT good, we made them look good, we just did not play. We had 20 mins at the start of the second half against Southampton when we looked almost awesome. Southampton looked shell-shocked when we clawed it back to 2-3. Then we collapsed. So depressing.

For our next game... Stockdale Peters, JET (can't be worse than delaney/smith/ainsley), delaney(because there's no-one else, cresswell Andrews, Hyam, Bowyer(not brilliant but teams may fear him?) Priskin, Chopra, Ellington Ingarmarson straight in for delaney when he's fit again

Took my youngest daughter to Peterborough on her birthday yesterday! She had a great day overall, but so disappointing her favourite football team ruined it for her!

Just highlights how rubbish Delaney is without Mcauley by his side! also Leadbitter needs to go how this guy is ITFC captain i will never know no passion, too casual and can only pass sideways. Andrews looks decent but we still lack creativity. Some ME get the cheque book out quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was thinking of going across, thank goodness I decided to do some decorating instead. Watched up to the 1st minute of second half on sky and decided I couldn't any longer. Just caught up with highlights from bbc and I was staggered watching Delany walking around as Peterborough scored final goal. It's like a Sunday morning kids game when one of the boys is having a huff and has decided not to play anymore. To think we recently extended his contract when we really should have been showing him the door. 12 goals conceded in a week is simply unacceptable, decisions have to be made quickly. Norwich sacked Gunn after a 7-1 defeat and quite simply Ipswich should follow and sack Jewell. If he cannot motivate his team then he should go and quickly.

jas0999- The person who ruined this club is your beloved Keane. PJ Saved us from the drop last year and has had a lot of sh!t to sort out from Keanes mistakes as well as ME AND SC.
4everblue added 14:04 - Aug 21
Since Evans "saved" us we've become a pathetic franchise with players that don't care and spoilt, impatient fans who have turned Portman Road into a dreamland for visiting teams. I fear that so much damage has been done that the effects are almost irreversible. Evans please go, and if that means we go into liquidation then so be it.
jas0999 added 14:06 - Aug 21
bluearmy4life - let me make this clear - Roy was rightly sacked. I am bored of saying it. Tell me though, when did he deliver such a poor run of results? Never is the answer - didn't conceed 5 once, let alone twice in four home games and certainly not 7. You can convince yourself as much as you like, but results are worse under PJ, plus negative tactics are driving fans away. Ask any Derby fan - PJ ruined them and he will ruin us. We are EIGHT months on and are going backwards - this is much worse than Roy's days. Such a shame that people won't admit it. PJ is a poor manager. End of.

First ever post on here but couldn't resist after yesterday! So much to do and so little time (31st august). Agree with what others have said about Mr Evans, he needs to let Jewell spend or risk his investment going totally pear shaped(weird theory I know). Look at the lower leagues, Carlisle have conceeded 1 in 4 so may have a good young defender we could poach. Been supporting town since i can remember and never felt this let down and hurt before. If the players showed as much passion as the fans we'd be ok, they just don't seem to be bothered or interested bar Cressy, Stockdale and Chops. Need 2xcb and a rb at least and most importantly they need to be young, fit, hungry and have something to prove. Surely it can't get any worse than this?
