Jewell: Schwarzer's Loss of Form Could Lead to Stockdale Return
Jewell: Schwarzer's Loss of Form Could Lead to Stockdale Return
Tuesday, 27th Sep 2011 08:17

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that Fulham’s 24-hour recall on loan keeper David Stockdale doesn’t just apply if first choice Mark Schwarzer is injured but also if the Australian suffers a loss of form. Over the weekend there were fears that Schwarzer, who worked with Jewell at Bradford early in his career, might face a spell out due to a back problem but those concerns ultimately proved unfounded.

The Blues manager says Town unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a clause which could only be invoked due to injuries when the 25-year-old signed in July: “We tried to get it so it was injury only but it’s not. They can recall David any time they want, which is not ideal but it was the only way they would let him go. We’ve taken a calculated risk.

“Loss or form or anything they can recall him. We did try to put a clause in that he would only go if they had no other goalkeepers fit but they just weren’t having it.”

However,Cottagers boss Martin Jol has told Stockdale, who is set to line-up for the Blues at West Ham tonight, that he won’t bring him back in a situation in which Schwarzer was out injured for merely a couple of weeks, although Jewell is sceptical: “David has said to me that he has spoken to the manager and he assures me that he wouldn’t do that but I’ve assured David that he would, as any manager would.”

Having recently had West Ham’s Czech U21 international Marek Stech on trial, but not looking to take his interest any further at present, Jewell says other potential replacements for Stockdale both in the short and longer term are being eyed: “We’re watching lots of goalkeepers and we’re trying to line up a keeper for next season because I know that Fulham won’t sell David Stockdale.

“We’re trying to line up a young one who will hopefully take us forward in the next few years."

It ridiculas to have got into this situation . I no you guys will moan about my comment. Keane used to say about players being more street wise . Maybe the management should as well. As for edwards he should now be bombed out the club . For christ sake his in his 30s and not 18 and should no better.

Why let Fulop go on a free when we don't have a decent back up keeper and are unlikely to get one???? Defies belief!

GKs are less likely to get injured and therefore taking a calculated risk is understandable in some ways. However while cover for outfield players may be present in numerous options throughout the squad the GK is a specialist position and needs specialist back up. At some point David Stockdale will be recalled and at the moment our back up options are as limited as those we have at RB.

And PJ is right; if Fulham are struggling for points and need to change the GK they will invoke the 24 hour return clause rather than throw in their no. 3 GK.

Never an ideal situation but it takes time to get the right player in. I'd rather wait and have a better player than a panic buy. Stockdale is doing a good job between the sticks so not really concerned. Jewell is probably scouting the position now and maybe we'll see movement in January?

PJ needs to sign this keeper he has promised since August then.

Keep the phone off the hook!

If the worst happens, there are plenty of decent keepers warming the benches at Premier League clubs who we should be able to bring in as a replacement on a similar basis.

PJ will have a list of replacement keepers. If Stockdale goes back, PJ will just start at the top of the list til he gets someone. No quality keeper will come while Stockdale is here - cos they wouldn't get a game - but WILL as soon as Stockdale goes - because they know they will get an immediate start. Not such a big worry, I think.
