Thursday, 13th Oct 2011 11:15

Town right-back Carlos Edwards was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, a £2,500 fine and a further 18-month driving ban at South Suffolk Magistrates' Court this morning.

The Trinidad and Tobago international will also have to carry out 200 hours of community service and pay £85 in court costs as well as a £15 victim surcharge.

On Monday, the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Edwards, who was banned from driving for 12 months earlier in the year, was arrested close to his home in Kesgrave on September 26th after driving his daughter to school.

Edwards's wife Denille gave birth to premature twins weighing only 2lb on Saturday at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge where they are currently in intensive care in incubators.

Town are due to release a statement later today.

Bloody hell - I'm really suprised by some responses on here almost calling for the death sentance!

Yes, he's been an idiot and been appropriately punished. Those saying that the 'average Joe' would get sent down for the same crime read different papers to me!

For that to have happened Carlos would have needed to go on an all day bender and crashed into a primary school!

Sorry but there is one law for the 'public' and another for overpaid sportsmen.

At the end of the day he had accumulated 22 points on his licence and should have been no where near a car, left alone driving one

While I have so much sympathy for him and his wife and wish them and their little ones well I think he got off very lightly.

As for the community service, lets see him on the A14 in high viz vest clearing up litter!

I really don't know what all the fuss is about. Any legal professional will tell you that the sentence imposed by the South East Suffolk Magistrates falls within the scope of the Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidlines for this particular offence.

End of Story!!!
