Cresswell Signs New Deal
Cresswell Signs New Deal
Friday, 28th Oct 2011 12:05

Left-back Aaron Cresswell has put pen to paper on a new Town contract taking him up to June 2015 with the option of a further season. The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues from Tranmere in the summer, has impressed this season with manager Paul Jewell describing him as “arguably our best player this year”.

Cresswell, who signed an initial three-year deal when he moved to Portman Road in July, says he is loving life with the Blues: "Obviously I'm delighted to have been offered and signed a new contract.

"I've really enjoyed my time at the club so far and feel that I'm progressing as a player. It's been a massive step up, coming here from Tranmere, but fortunately it has gone well so far and hopefully there will be many happy times ahead."

The Liverpudlian admits that he is disappointed to be ending his ever-present record by missing Saturday’s match at Millwall due to his red card against Crystal Palace: "I'm gutted to be out of the game but I have to learn from the setback.”

A tribunal recently set the compensation due to Tranmere for the Liverpool-born full-back at an initial £240,000 rising to £520,000 after various milestone clauses.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had an escape clause removed from his contract. However he has done enough to earn a better deal even if it isn't the case.

Another great piece of business by the club and Manager, Aaron certainly puts in a very impressive effort on the field and is improving rapidly.

More signings like this please Mr Jewell. I appreciate what he's doing by bringing in experienced players like Bowyer, Bullard et al but it would be great if we had young hungry players who had excelled in League One for example (or even made it into the PFA Team of the year at that level) who were ready to push them for a place with a view to replacing them. I hate to draw parallels with the scum, but Lambert's transfer policy is spot on with the likes of Bennett and Pilkington making it into the PFA team of the year in league one and Morison being a handful at Champ level. Can't wait til Lambert gets a job at a big club, and the budgies fall down the leagues again

this is the difference between Jewell and managers of past, Jewell realises he has massive potential and is making sure we keep hold of him. managers in the past were too quick to sell some really good players, roy keane springs to mind! letting our captain and best cbs contracts expire, selling good young players like rhodes, garvan and danny haynes! great to see some positivity! I am glad we extended the contract by a year to go with his deserved pay rise. An excellent signing, and well done to him.

I doubt there is an escape clause as we didn't have to offer him this deal with so long to go on his old contract.

Perfect. Tie up the Collins and Andrews deals, get back-up for Stockdale or make Jol a very tempting offer, sign a couple in the mould of cresswell from the lower leagues for the midfield, get in Rhodes or Sharp, Chopra to get a hat-trick tomorrow and we win, we get prmoted....

...and that's all i have on my Christmas list.

Perhaps it was a lesser contract he was on originally whilst we went through the tribunal, as I would imagine it would have been considered when setting the fee - you wouldn't offer big money to someone you wanted to pay so little for.
Now the tribunal has finished and the fee set, offer the lad what you would have offered him in a normal deal, whilst letting him think he has gotten a payrise!!
Good business in my eyes!

The acquasition of Cresswell in the first place was a coup, but a watertight long contract for him is great for the club and all concerned. Congratulations goes to the club, and, who spotted him initially ?
