Jewell: Long Fortnight on Training Ground
Jewell: Long Fortnight on Training Ground
Tuesday, 8th Nov 2011 09:41

Boss Paul Jewell says it will be a long fortnight on the training ground in the wake of the Blues’ 3-2 defeat to Doncaster on Saturday. Town are next in action against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday 19th November.

Jewell says that at present his side isn’t replicating what happens in training during matches: “We’ve got some away on international duty and it makes it an even longer fortnight now that we’ve lost.

“If you come to our training ground it’s always busy and it’s always hard-working. We’re just not transferring the stuff we do in training on to the pitch at the moment and we’ve got to do it sooner rather than later.”

Away from Playford Road due to international duty are David Stockdale (England), Keith Andrews (Republic of Ireland), Carlos Edwards (Trinidad and Tobago), Tamás Priskin (Hungary), Josh Carson (Northern Ireland U21s) and young keeper Cody Cropper (US U23 training camp). Danny Collins has pulled out of the Wales squad.

Stockdale spent yesterday evening in hospital but neither Paul Jewell nor Fabio Capello need to worry as the on-loan Fulham man was there with his daughter, tweeting: “In A and E with Daisy! Not good as a bead is stuck up her nose! Long night!”

Fortunately, Daisy was fine, although his other daughter Molly managed to lock herself in an A and E toilet while they were waiting, the keeper adding: “It's always eventful in our house!”

Meanwhile, in Ireland, former Town keeper Shane Supple captained his Gaelic football team St Brigid’s to their second ever Dublin Senior Football Championship title on Sunday, beating St Oliver Plunkett's 0-10 to 0-8.

Supple, who walked away from football while with the Blues two years ago, says the victory shows he made the right choice having become disillusioned with the professional game in England: “This justifies it all, definitely.

“It’s something I really wanted, and to kind of prove to myself as well, that I’d made the right decision. So I’m absolutely chuffed to bits now.

“Winning this title is the best day of my life, in footballing terms, without a shadow of a doubt. It’s all I wanted to do. There’s nothing better than winning it with your mates.”

Elsewhere, ex-Town full-back Mauricio Taricco has come out of retirement yet again, making his second start of the season for Brighton, where he is assistant manager, in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Barnsley.

The 38-year-old Argentinian, whose most recent decision to hang up his boots was announced by Seagulls boss Gus Poyet at Portman Road a few weeks ago, says he likes to keep people guessing: "I love it - making everyone think I've gone, then coming back!

"I said to the gaffer that I love playing football. The style we want to play, I think it suits me.

"An ideal situation would be to have everyone fit and playing, and me next to Gus trying to help in any capacity. But I'll step in and try to do the best I can."

Think we need a reshape for the Forest Game. If we do the diamond formation again we are going to take a beating.
I see no harm in completely changing the midfield and giving a chance to some of the members on the fringe of the squad.
Stockdale, Waabara, Sonko, Collins, Cresswell, Martin, Healy, Andrews, Carson, Chopra, JET. Bench- ALB, T.Smith, Bullard, Edwards, Scotland
Lets get some "fresher" legs and see what happens. We are meant to have a full squad of players afterall. Give Bullard a rest for one game- hardly going to hurt! If I was the Forest Manager though I would predict------
Stockdale, Edwards, Sonko, Collins, Cresswell, Bullard, Bowyer, Andrews, Leadbitter, Chopra, Scotland.
I fear we are a little too predictable......

I think Tudgay, Moussi, Greening, Findlay and McGugan (think that's the right spelling) will prove to much to our desperately fragile defence. Have to hope we can snatch an early goal and then all-out defend for a 1-0 win. If they score early I can see it turning into yet another humiliation. I'd settle for a 0-0 right now.

Ha ha! Stockdale leads an exciting one! Things getting stuck everywhere!

A bead up his daughter's hooter; a daughter in the lav.....

And the match ball stuck in his net.

On many occasions.

Does he tweet during matches?

Stockdale has been our outstanding player this season. If he gets recalled we are well and truly in trouble.
Miracle if we get a draw the way we are playing.
Stockdale is a busy man. How many calories a game does he burn for us? Constantly throwing himself about like a 1-man army sometimes.
He must feel like punching out some of our defenders sometimes.

Not an outstanding parent, though, by the sound of it.

Perhaps the dimwit should put the phone down and look after his kids.

How many shots on target did Stockdale save on Saturday ? How many crosses or corners did he claim ? He has played very well this season but for me his positioning sometimes leaves him in the centre of the goal very flat footed .
We need to get Jimmy forward more where he can attack and hurt the opposition as he did last season if not Andrews, get Edwards,Martin ,Carson and Jet rotating in the wide positions with Kennedy or Bowyer playing the holding role in the middle in front of the back four . Get rid of leadbitter he has done little in 2 and half seasons, certainly as the attack minded player he was signed as .He doesnt want to sign his offered contract so get rid or we will have another Captain leaving at the end of the season .
Scotland and Chopra up front with Murray on the bench for real pace to change it ,Murphy and Ellington as squad back up .
The team is good enough to beat anyone in the league as already proved just need the confidence back ,Forest are hardly setting the world alight are they ?

maybe treat the games as training sessions and see what happens PJ. may be its a phycological thing.

I'm amazed people arn't going more mental about the fact he STILL played a diamond against Doncaster...

This is an important point as I honestly don't think there are many managers who would make such an idiotic mistake, and yet we have one of them.

PJ is a nice guy, I like him, but I'm REALLY starting to think he doesn't have a clue.

Drop Jimmy. As much to tell him he doesn't have a guaranteed place in the starting line up as anything.

Stockdale

Edwards Sonko Collins Cresswell

Carson Bowyer Andrews Martin

Chopra JET

Quite simple. I don't think Chops and JET have started a game together yet have they? I think Jay needs a start to be honest, otherwise he's always expected to come off the bench, be spectacular and change the game. Martin and Carson swapping wings with Bowyer controlling midfield and Andrews hopefully back to his old self.

@Garv

They started together against Peterborough!

Priskin and Chopra up front for me, but would be happy to see JET get some games.

whippet like you I am uncomfortable with the Lavery situation. I respect PJ's position of not paying a youngster in advance until a player has properly proven himself. However, if the 200 pounds per week for 6 months that some say he was offered is indeed the case then I trhink that should be re-evaluated before it's too late.
Let's try Jimmy further forward too.

agree totally with you tractor breezer. Give lavery a few bob extra jimmy further forward & andrews doing holding role & protecting the defence. carson has to start & murray on the bench

Just read an article by Ledley King,he reckons Spurs can challege the top two in the Premiership because they have width and pace in the side and they work together as a unit. Now I know their side is full of internationals but the same principals will bring success at any level.PJ said at the start of the season this is what we lacked I therefore found it puzzling why Carson and Martin were both on the bench and he persists with a formation the dosen`nt work.
