Jewell Understands Fans' Frustrations
Jewell Understands Fans' Frustrations
Tuesday, 29th Nov 2011 08:23

Town boss Paul Jewell says he understands fans’ frustrations after five defeats on the trot but urged patience as he looks to bring success back to Portman Road after a number of lean years. The Blues manager says that while he has “materials that are top class” to work with, it takes time to build a successful side.

Jewell said: “I understand fans’ edginess but all I would say is be patient and if you go back to when I came here, I didn’t say it was going to be a one-season wonder — I thought it was going to take time.

“We’ve had a lot of mediocrity for a long time, [some people] think this club is in a mess, [if it is]we’ve got to get out of that mess.

“Personally, I don’t think it’s in a mess. The owner’s got a huge ambition for the club but it hasn’t been successful for a long time, you’ll know that better than me.

“We’ll have to have a bit of pain, but we’ve got a lot of materials that are top class here, but getting the right team, getting the right spirit takes time.

“The supporters have been great, but at the end of the day I understand their frustrations. But no one’s more frustrated than me and no one’s more determined to put it right than me either.”

The Blues boss says that while results are bad a lot of good work which is going on off the field can be overlooked: “I’m trying to build [an infrastructure] but people only want to know what the result was on Saturday, and I fully understand that.

“I think we’ve got to bring through some younger kids, we’ve got some talented young kids coming through.

“We’ve got lots of good things going on, we’re trying to improve all aspects of the club, the running of the club off the pitch.

“But the key thing is getting it right on the pitch, I fully understand that, but in time I’m sure all those things will make a successful football team.”

Regarding Town’s current woes, Jewell insists there’s no panic: “I think you’ve got to be calm. Things are tough for us at the moment but I’ve done about 500 games and I’ve been in tough situations before, I’ve got through some of them, I didn’t get through some others.

“But from my perspective I’ve got great belief in what we do, what we’re trying to do and as I said when I came here, it’s a long-term plan.

“I didn’t come to get promotion in a year, there might have to be a bit of pain [in order] to get better. I’m not panicking, I’m disappointed, hugely disappointed, but I’m not panicking.”

Going forward, he says he’ll be looking to start building his squad for 2011/12 when the transfer window opens in January: “We brought a lot of players in in the summer at once [this year].

“My idea would be to try and get players in for next year as we go along rather than all at once. I came in January with the window already half-closed and then we brought a lot of players in at once.

“Maybe the way to do it next year is to keep the players that we’ve got here that we want and try in January and between then and the new season to try and target people who will take us further on.

“It was never going to be a short-term thing. We’ve got 29 games left yet, so we’re not giving up on this season, but we’ve got to be aware we’ve got no divine right to be in the play-offs.

“People think that just because we signed one or two experienced players that we’re automatically going to be at the top of the league, but it’s a tough league.”

Get behind the team and get behind Paul Jewell. Changing the manager every 6 months won't bring success.

Have a plan, share it with the players, staff and fans then stick with it.

Problem I have is that PJ is lurching and reacting to every game.

Bring in some hugry youth, shore up the deffence, get a permanent keeper, have 3-5 players who are the spine of the team and build your team around them. Develop the local youth policy and look to see what was done in the late 90's.

Write off this year as not getting relegated is the priority, not the playoffs.

Do this and the fans will be on your side, else you are building up trouble.

Agree with Frase1987. How can continued loan or 1 year contracts to geriatric ex Prem players achieve his aim? A mix of this and youth yes, but not on its own. This way its a perpetual annual rebuild. I hope Carson's run in the side leads to him signing a new contract.

As a fan standing behind the goal in the North i enjoy nothing more than seeing a young lad from the Ressies getting ready to come off the bench and show us what he's got. We all love to see home grown talent in a game as they tend to give 110% to try and prove themselves. Lets give a couple of debuts this season. Mix things up a bit. Surely this is the year to do it! Esspecially as we have the opportunity to play a "kid" alongside the likes of Bowyer with loads of experience to sponge off!

Keane came here and said 'we're going up'. It's as if we're still remembering that promise and forgetting what Jewell actually said at the start of the season. He wants us on his side so that we can enjoy progress with him, not so that he can try and prove us all wrong. I really think we need to trust him, this season wasn't going to be a world beater.

Also, in regard to old players. Their experiance is invalueble. Many of them were class pros in their prime and are probably giving back to the younger players this experiance every day on the training field. If we'd have played all of our young players at once, they'd have been lambs to the slaughter. Smith and Ainsley showed us that. The experianced boys were intended to bring some stability and eventually push the young talent through so that they were ready to take their places when the time came. This hasn't necessarily worked, but I'd have thought this sounds more like a long term plan and could have worked better than just throwing all the young lads in at the deep end when the team is currently under so much pressure to progress.

Maybe as fans we need to forget about going up the league table for a season or two and concentrate on the building of a squad which could gets us there and keep us there.

But how many of the "materials" will still be here next year? Or even by the end of January? If I saw a coherent building process, I would be happy, but instead we have loans and short-term contracts and one fix after another.

"The players we have will steady the club and allow proper team building to take place ! "

A few points off the relegation place is certainly steadying things. Much like the Titanic steadied itself on the seabed.

Proper team building, eh ?

How many of HIS team builders are out of contract in the summer ? What part of that 'building' was his first signing, Drury ?

If the players who are out of contract or are loanees leave next June we will have about SEVEN players left ! What the hell kind of building is that other than trying to assemble a squad suitable (and cost effective I fear) to play in League 1.

We are NOT rebuilding, we are patching up a hapless squad, cobbled together on the cheap from a dire selection of aged 'has beens', failures and other clubs cast offs. That is why we are where we are, why we have suffered five defeats in a row and why players like Leadbitter, Priskin are leaving and promising youngsters like Carson aren't signing new contracts or are leaving as with Lavery.

I'm not even sue now if Jewell gave up talking the talk we would be mucvh better - but at least he does provide a necessary service for those with their heads in the sand.

Well said Harry 10. The basic question is are we slowly building and improving or going for the quick fix (and failing)? Evidence suggests the first. MathieandMarshall - as you like nothing more than a "young lad ...... showing us what he's got" I dont think you should e allowed in the family section.

"We made a few mistakes in the January transfer window trying to have a little bit of dignity going down but it didn't work and we're still paying for those mistakes."
