Reading Keeper on Town Wish List
Reading Keeper on Town Wish List
Sunday, 8th Jan 2012 00:58

Town are understood to be interested in taking Reading keeper Alex McCarthy on loan for the remainder of the season. The 22-year-old recently returned from a similar spell at Leeds United.

Manager Paul Jewell has previously said that the Blues are keen on signing an additional glovesman to compete with Arran Lee-Barrett and Richard Wright, former loanee David Stockdale having been recalled by Fulham last month.

Guildford-born 6ft 4in-tall England U21 cap McCarthy came through the Royals’ youth system and has had prior loan spells at Woking, Cambridge United, Team Bath, Aldershot Town, Yeovil Town and Brentford in addition to Leeds.

Another short term signing. Would be a decent signing if permanent, but it isn't. Just another loan player who doesn't really give a dam if we stay up or not. I'm sorry but if this continues I can see us ending up in very deep sh1t.

Won't matter how good the gk is if we continue to play central defenders who aren't good enough for League 2 let alone the championship. 2 CDs badly needed and a decent, solid rb which will allow edwards to come on as an impact sub. Tamas the pistol Priskin needs to be played up front and the whole team needs a new defensive coach. Sports psychologist needed for confidence and motivation. Our team has become a joke.

Guentchev do you even know who priskin is...! Definitely the player we need!!

A young centre forward ( unlike Wellington, scotland and wilbraham) who has many years left in the game. A 1.7 million pound European international striker who can turn our season around if we let him.

To rebuild the team we need to start with a permanent and consistent spine.

Guentchev you post some very sensible things a lot of the time but I'm sorry re prisken you are totally deluded. Not saying he hasn't the talent he just either hasn't got a footballing brain good enuf to utilise that talent or just can't be bothered, will suit European football much better outside UK I feel.

Like the previous post it doesn't matter who the keeper is if we don't sort out the defence. we have had the England no 3 and how many goals did he let in? He is now playing for Fulham and playing blinders every week. what does that tell you

It tells you that has a proper defence in front of him rather than the league 2 one we have here at the moment. Lets ditch all those that dont want to sign their new contracts; Leadboots et al. sick of players holding this club to ransom. Sign a RB,2 CBS, GK, STKR and we can pull out of this mess. But I doubt we will go anywhere with PJ still in charge as he is bereft of any tactical knowledge i.e too long out of the game before spells with derby and now us. We need a manager with some idea of what to do when plan A goes wrong; i.e diamond sussed out yet he continued game after game with it and oppo teams took us to pieces. I dread Birmingham on wednesday if we dont have any new players in by then.

Tractorboy @ you are right in what you point out. Firstly we did Fulham a service by playing Stockdale every week so that he got plenty of match practice and experience, and secondly, if any goalkeeper has to put up with the barrage of chances that we allow the opposition to have then goals will be scored against us. Half of the goals P'boro scored were one on ones where really the onus is on the the attacker to score and the goalkeeper is there to try to put him off.

Defence needs sorting first. Protect the keeper.

I admit that I'm no coach but exactly how clear does it have to be that we don't have any deffenders at the club. These guys make mistakes that you teach kids about on a sunday mourning. Simple things such if your not sure who's around you kick the ball out the way. The thing is is that we are the team everyone wants to play.

Tbh don't care either way, loan to end of season then bring in perm keeper then fine by me as long as no silly recall....GK is least of our worries so if it frees up cash for two cbs a rb a mf and striker I'm happy with it :-)

Spot on bluelady, keep the cash for defenders.

Frankly doesn't matter who you play in goal with the rubbish defence we have in front of him and clueless tactics of the even more clueless manager. You have only got to look at Stockdales goals conceded per game in the prem v his performances at ITFC

We all know the areas that need improving but I'm sure the first signing will be a midfielder!! Because we need more of those don't we?!

Guentchev......priskin has had so many chances its untrue. When Jewell came Scotland was left out and dealt with it by buckling down, losing weight and has got back in the team. Priskin sulked and moaned to Hungarian press. He in my opinion has never shown any Passion and we should offload. Bluelady... glad we agree, but u told me off the other week for saying this.
