McCarthy Consulted With Connor Before Making Move
McCarthy Consulted With Connor Before Making Move

New signing Alex McCarthy has revealed that he consulted with former Blue Connor Wickham before deciding to join Town on his three-month loan, which was confirmed this morning. The Reading goalkeeper, who will wear the number 32 shirt while at Portman Road, is set to make his debut at Birmingham on Wednesday.

McCarthy, whose move will officially go through on Tuesday, told the club site: "When I knew Ipswich were interested I had a little chat with Connor, who was obviously here, and he told me about how great the club is and how much I would enjoy it here.

"I know him through our time together with the England U21s and he just told me to get down to Ipswich because there are some great lads here and I would really enjoy it.

"Obviously I've come here to get some game time, but the main priority is to play my part in helping Ipswich move up the table."

The keeper tweeted that he had a very busy first day in Suffolk: "Haven't stopped all day, looking forward to a chilled evening!"

The 22-year-old, who has agreed a new contract with Reading until June 2015, is with the Blues until April 11th.

The Royals will have a 24-hour emergency recall option after the first month, as is usual with short-term loans.

The moment pointless loan move since ... Reece Wabara.
Keep 'em coming : it's either this or signing some decent players on proper contracts ...

That's the extended spelling of 'most' as 'moment'.

Good signing. He can't be any worse than ALB.

Never heard of the guy so don't know whether this is good or bad.

One point to make though is that 3 months is neither here nor there. Commit to at least the end of season so the player, parent club, the manager, team and fans know what is going on and can support it. Is this part of PJs 5 year plan as I am left scratching my head as the mouth is doing one thing and the actions another!

We could put him and ALB in goal and, with our defense, still ship 3 goals a game.

We need defenders who understand their job.

Good job he didn't speak to any if the players already here. Would have been a different story. Good luck Alex, think your gonna need it with these defenders in front of u. It's gonna be busy...

At least he should get plenty to do if our defence plays as it has done.

Hi Phil

Obviously not much news coming out of PRoad with 5 different posts on a bench warming goalkeeper on a 3 month loan with a 24 hr call back.

An insignificant and unnecessary addition to the PR squad gets 5 individual posts!! What's going on Phil? Hope you are not losing it as well.

PS great website.

Like others very disappointed we cannot get a goalkeeper on a permanent deal. This means there will be no continuity and what happens when he goes back before the most crucial games of the season. We are doomed Captain Mainwaring.

Good luck to the lad.

He's going to need it with Jewells idea of a defence in front of him!

The man could be the best keeper in the world....but with our defence he will be in the net more times then a dolphin is in an llegal fishing net.

Feels wrong that we have to take a young Reading second or third choice keeper on loan with a 24hr recall...

What has happened to this Club...where are the scouts?? There are no quality keepers on the continent wanting a chance of first team football for a great Club like this?? Utter joke..

At least it isn't Joe Lewis I suppose..

Welcome aboard, can't help feeling it's a bit unfair on ALB he's playing well at the minute but I suppose our management team know what thier dong. Phil any news on St Ledger.Much more important addition .

This lads future lies with Reading FC so why are we wasting time and money signing a loanee GK on a 24 hr recall?

Its yet another indication Mr Jewell has lost the plot.

Best of luck Alex; I sincerely hope you can cope with the very poor defenders in front of you and also the many disgruntled fans behind you.

Can't make this signing out, last week Paul Jewell said he made a mistake in the last transfer market by signing to many old players and to many loan players.
First player we sign in this transfer window is a loan player also i have not seen any comment from Jewell or Clegg on this signing.
I hate to say it but this is the worse group of players i have seen playing for Town since the Jack Milburn days when he went to Scotland and signed about 10 new players.
We lack pace, height commitment and a will to win. If Marcus Evans is not prepared to back our present Manager with big money to sign the players we need to avoid relegation he should make changes now. Time waits for no one in this game.

CornardBlue - Jewell couldn't tell North from South, or East from West.
So, who in there right mind would give him anymore money to spend - I wouldn't trust him to spend a single penny of mine. CLUELESS.

I just don't see the sense of this - may as well have played our own young keeper. Pointless signing from PJ. Is this really the best he can do?
