Blues Chasing Crewe Kid
Blues Chasing Crewe Kid

Town’s teenage target is understood to be Crewe Alexandra attacking midfielder Nick Powell. The highly-rated 17-year-old has attracted the attention of a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, since breaking into the Alex side last season.

Over the weekend, manager Paul Jewell revealed that he'd made offers for three players, Pompey pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce, as revealed by TWTD last night, and Powell. We understand the Blues are still waiting to hear a response from both clubs.

Powell, a 6ft tall England U18 international, has made 21 starts and 22 sub appearances for his hometown club, scoring six goals.

This season, the youngster has established him in the first team, making 18 of those first team starts.

The Gresty Road talent factory continues to produce youngsters tipped for big futures with striker Max Clayton, another England U18 international, also expected to go a long way in the game.

It would be a huge surprise if the Blues were to land Powell given the long-established interest from such big clubs.

Same as you SamPentas, I know nothing about this lad but he seems to be highly rated and it lifts my spirits to see that we're linked with talented lower league players like this, definitely the right direction to rebuild this once great club.

Great news and sounds as if he would be a good signing. Where would that leave Drury though? Not back out on loan again, please. Still, it is a squad system. Hope we can get new signings in before our visit to Leeds.

I'm going to save my excitment on this one for when/if it gets further down the line and we have a big accepted etc., but as a prospect and a target I agree it is much more promising that we're going after these sorts of players!! I'm very pleased with all three of the targets we're going after, lets just hope we can get them in! Jason Pearce is a captain in waiting as well IMO...

From one extreme to the other. I guess PJ's new recruitment strategy means we won't be going for David Weir?

Crewe have a policy not to sell their younger players - they aim to bring them through, give them a good run in the first XI to develop for a few years, and hope that a few make the grade to sell on for a big fee.

I think we might end up "doing a Cresswell" on this one - the lad's contract is up in the summer, and PJ is trying to get in before other clubs, turn his head, and it'll be another fee for the tribunal to decide...

Sean St Ledger, Jason Pearce, Joel Ward and now Nick Powell, sounds to good to be true?

Some good thinking coming from the club. If PJ can pull off the three deals and start getting a few points then we'll have a consolidation season rather than a relegation fight. Also it should take some of the pressure off him.

I try not to get too excited about speculation these days.

A pessimist is never disappointed.

promising, hate to say it but I'm starting to get concerned Jewell will go bi-polar the other way and remove ALL of the experience from the team. Experience is a handy thing to have especially in key areas at certain times.

Don't want to pour cold water on this one but I saw him play recently and he didn't impress. Substituted at half-time after an anonymous display. Crewe fans seemed amazed that the likes of Chelsea were interested.

Seriously, folks!! I saw this kid playin and he's got HUGE potential. His off the ball movement is outstanding but a lil heavy with his first-touch though. With the right guidance this kid can be the next Frank Lampard!! Get him!!

Yeah we're really gonna land him ahead of all those Premier League sides lol

Cant really get excited about this one... Cant see him making any impact on the first team this season at 17, stepping up 2 divisions. Never the less, could be a good one for the future at a good price now.
