Blues Chasing Crewe Kid Wednesday, 18th Jan 2012 11:08
Town’s teenage target is understood to be Crewe Alexandra attacking midfielder Nick Powell. The highly-rated 17-year-old has attracted the attention of a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, since breaking into the Alex side last season.
Over the weekend, manager Paul Jewell revealed that he'd made offers for three players, Pompey pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce, as revealed by TWTD last night, and Powell. We understand the Blues are still waiting to hear a response from both clubs.
Powell, a 6ft tall England U18 international, has made 21 starts and 22 sub appearances for his hometown club, scoring six goals.
This season, the youngster has established him in the first team, making 18 of those first team starts.
The Gresty Road talent factory continues to produce youngsters tipped for big futures with striker Max Clayton, another England U18 international, also expected to go a long way in the game.
It would be a huge surprise if the Blues were to land Powell given the long-established interest from such big clubs.

Sounds promising along with the possibility of Pearse and Ward - think we are more likely to get the latter tho'. I doubt Crewe will sell unless they get mega bucks and we aint in the premiership...yet!
This is the real deal. My collegue who works in administration at Crewe confirmed to me last night that this is who Town are after and that the double bid came from another club.
Much as i'd like to see the Pompey duo and NP from Crewe, being the pessimist that I am when it comes to ITFC doing transfers.. Don't hold your breath because Clegg will be involved somewhere..You have been warned..
What a lift it would give us all if we could sign some young players such as Powell. It is about belief in the future of the club, as if fans think we have the makings of a good side as youngsters develop this is a big help when it comes to selling season tickets in times of poor form. We have to end the rush to try to get promoted and have a proper 5-year plan.
Very concerned that we are linked with so many players but nothing actually happens. Our hopes are raised with the names that are banded around but rarely do they come to fruition. We desperately need a centre back before the big games with Leeds and West Ham otherwise we have no cover whatsoever for Smith and Sonko who if regulars are not going to win you anything. Fair play to Smith though did pretty well on Saturday. Come PJ/SC lets get things moving as time is running out.
maybe we should be focusing on staying up first. i doubt a 17 year old is going to help in that department. buying youth should be more of a summer thing and when you are near the relegation zone in january its a better idea to bring in players already near their peak. if we can do both then of course go for it but not at the expense of going down!
I very much doubt any of these deals are going anywhere. The fact that the bids were made days ago and nothing has happened says it all. And it doesn't say much for the scouting system that they are turning up players that everyone is talking about–hidden talents, that's the trick.
If prem clubs have expressed an INTEREST, then that doesnt mean we dont stand a chance. A enquiry is far from a bid, where as we have a firm offer with a step up a level or two (arguable at the moment maybe) so he might take it for now with a further step up to the prem if/ when he produces the goods in the future. Optimistically he wont need to leave as he'd go up with us, but realistically not at the moment.
Even if a few premier league clubs are interested at 17 he will have more chance of first team football here then there. Especially at thhis time of the season.
Maybe that will help swing things in our favour. I don't think it will but heres hoping.
Crewe produce good'uns, sounds like a great potential - but kinda need to promise first team footy or he might as well go play for Premiership reserves
Sound promissing and to be truthful yes Crewe bring on some good players. Just look at this free kick he scored in a England under 17 match. Good finish i say.
I'd be amazed if we got this kid. He's a sh!t hot talent by all accounts. I'm good friends with a Crewe fan and he told me we can 'F*ck right off'. Would love to see it happen
All this tittle tattle makes interesting reading BUT NO PERMANENT SIGNINGS. In the past month 3 Loan players have returned to their clubs,2 have been released and Shane O'Connor has failed a trial with Southend but looks like going back to his native Ireland. For all the talk have only signed a goalkeeper on loan for 3m who didnt look any better than what we already have. I realise its difficult now to persuade players to come to a struggling club but surely we can find one or two decent players for rb and cb if not more, and until Jewell gets them he will be in my eyes all talk and no substance.
