Jewell Confirms Bids Turned Down
Jewell Confirms Bids Turned Down
Thursday, 19th Jan 2012 13:09

Blues boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that Town’s three bids — for Portsmouth pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce and Crewe’s Nick Powell - have all been rejected. However, the Town manager says that that’s only to be expected with no club ever accepting a first offer.

Jewell said: “We’ve made offers and as far as I’m aware they’ve all been rejected. I’ve never been the manager of a club which has accepted a first bid, I’ve never known a first bid to be accepted by a selling club.”

While that appears to intimate that Jewell is keen to make further offers, he says owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg will now assess the financial side of the proposed moves: “I’ll let other people deal with that side of it. If we’re so far apart there’s no good wasting everybody’s time — ours, Portsmouth’s, the players’ — if a deal can’t be done.

"If there’s a deal to be done and we can do it, we’re interested. If not, we move on.”

The Town boss refused to confirm that the third bid was for Crewe’s Nick Powell with the Railwaymen, unlike Portsmouth, yet to comment: “It’s private. If clubs want to come out like Portsmouth have and say they’ve had bids rejected by Ipswich, that’s fair enough, but I don’t really want to comment on anyone else.”

As things stand, Jewell now doesn’t expect Leicester’s Sean St Ledger to join: “He played on Tuesday for Leicester against Forest in the FA Cup, so it looks like he might be in their plans.

“We thought we had something done last week but it hasn’t happened and for whatever reason that’s probably gone now.”

Jewell dismissed links with Swindon pair Matt Ritchie and Paul Caddis and ex-Blackpool midfielder Bojan Djordjic.

Wicked Blue parroting Jewell will get the club nowhere, are you not aware that we are nearly 2/3 thru this window and all we get is the same claptrap, suggest you read 62WasBest.Having an absent owner,a CEO who seems clueless and a Manager that seems unable to sign any player permanently is a recipe for Div1.
Agents Chairman and Managers are obviously aware that Ipswich have money but seem unable to spend it wisely.
Was surprised to read that as things stand with players contracts at the moment, wont have a full bench come 30 June.Who is it deciding the ridiculously short contracts being offerred if one is made at all.Players want security as well as money and we have lost 3 or 4 young players during past year because of this.
I know it must be more difficult now to attract players of the right calibre than it was in the past because of how low the club has sunk since Jim Magilton was sacked, both in league position and organisation;but a couple of centre backs and a right back must be obtained in this window or we will continue to leak more goals than I can remember in 50 years.

Does this club not have a plan B,C,D,F etc??

Not by the looks of it!!
The Owner, CEO and manager all knew the league position of this club and the way the current team ships in goals for fun weeks ago, yet all we to show for it is a loan keeper??
This club is in serious serious trouble of going down if no new quality additions are added-----FACT!

Surco72 - Don't 'non-footballing people' control most football clubs these days (sadly)?

Foggy, Compo and Clegg have it all under control, I'm sure.......

Legend I think the problem is there is no plan E.

Think i have said this somewhere before on a different post. We need to get someone into the club whose only job is to deal with transfers. Brian Marwood does it at Man City and Damian Comolli at Liverpool. They are involved in scouting, player negotiations etc.

Is he just keeping quiet about the Swindon pair I wonder, maybe he's trying both methods and sees which one happens...if that Crewe lad is real quality then you're looking at £2m+ without a doubt...they'll be so many inquires about him which will just increase the price. He won't come down here at 17 when they'll be a lot of interest from Clubs around that area and they'll be plenty of them..

Abroad is where we should be scouting ffs...fed up thinking about it.

To be fair to Jewell and Clegg ,they had agreed a deal for St Ledger only for Leicester to pull out at last minute so surely that was plan A , Pearce at Pompey is plan B and as i said before the majority of deals are done at end of window when everyone knows what really are their options

Can Crewe not put him on Ebay? Buy it now price £2m, starting bid of 100k to get the punters in or best offer? Free delivery. We could have a whip around after the Leeds game.

"Agents Chairman and Managers are obviously aware that Ipswich have money"

You have to be joking.

It is because we have NO money that we are unable to sign anyone decent. Even after receiving £8m for Wickham the best we could get in was aged has beens on short term contracts. Why do you think so many 'offers' failed to get any further than a lot of huff and puff in the press ? Why do you think that we are not able to offer the level of contracts that would keep players.

It is bad enough not being able to sign players but when we can't keep players of the promise of Carson then something is seriously wrong. If we can only afford players from the pound shop (when they are on offer) then it's going to show on the pitch.

Take a look sometime .. and at the league table while you are at it.

Whilst it's great that we are trying to bring in flesh blood but time is ticking a little bit?
I was hoping we would have at least 3 new players by now?
I know there is still time but, without new players I firmly believe we will struggle for the remainder of the season. Sell the club to the NEW PLAYERS AND SEAL THE DEAL.

Fed up with the hype, why dont they just keep quiet until the deal is done or not as the case may be. Next.

Well i knew we wouldn't get Powell. The 2 Pompey players we won't get as Portsmouth want to keep the younger players at the club. Look elsewhere before time runs out Jewell.

TractorBoy666-
I think you are dead right. Powell is being monitored by a few Premier League Clubs-Crewe would be stupid to offload him now. The Portsmouth situation seems dead too,-they have made it crystal clear they don't want to sell these 2.
On the (positive side?) think we'll see Oli Johnson in by the end of tomorrow.Doesn't fill me with enthusiasm,- would rate Priskin higher.
