Jewell Delighted to Be On Right End of Last Gasp Winner
Jewell Delighted to Be On Right End of Last Gasp Winner
Saturday, 4th Feb 2012 17:55

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted to be on the right end of a last minute 3-2 result for once, the Blues having been the victims of last-gasp heartbreak several times this season.

Jewell said: “It’s happened to us on numerous occasions, so it was nice. It was an end to end game, in the second half especially.

“First half, I thought we started the game well, I thought we were in control, scored the goal, gave a bad goal away, and then another one after that.

“At half-time we went back out, took the game to them, got it to 2-2 and it was end to end with no team settling for the draw.”

Jewell and his staff celebrated Michael Chopra’s injury time goal more than usual — with the players also making their delight clear - but claimed he was merely trying not to get too cold in the snowy Ricoh Arena conditions: “We were just trying to keep warm!

“You try and keep your emotions in check as much as you can because you’re aware of the opposition, but we’ve been through an awful lot as a group, being victims of last minute goals against us, so it was nice to get a little bit of payback.

“I was worried it might have been the same story. I was really annoyed at half-time, the way we’d given the goals away.

“After the West Ham game where it was high tempo with a high octane atmosphere we came here and it was quite quiet and we wanted to use that for our advantage, but not to slow the game down too much. But I thought we were slow after we scored, and they came back into the game from nothing.

“Second half, I said I’d change it after 15 minutes but we really came at Coventry and I felt the lads did well in the second half. We were a bit open at the back, a bit harum scarum at times, but at least we showed that we were on the front foot and we wanted to win the match.”

Jewell had no complaints regarding Coventry’s penalty for handball by Ibrahima Sonko: “I asked him what he was doing at half-time and he said he was putting his hand up for offside and the ball’s hit him. It’s ridiculous. For our penalty, Lee’s said the lad nudged him but I didn’t have a great view.”

Overall, the Blues boss was delighted with his side’s week’s work: “We’re at a vital time in the season where we are down the wrong end of the table, so [it’s good] to get six points in a week.

“When you play a team at the top of the league and then one at the bottom, you’re always worried what the reaction might be, but we’ve come out with two good results.

“I think we’ve been part of a decent game on a bloody cold day, and it’s nice to get three points.”

Coventry boss Andy Thorn was disappointed to lose a game in the closing stages for the second week running: "The weather wasn't great but that isn't any excuse for losing the game. We looked like we would win it for the majority of the match and once again, we couldn't see it through.

"I don't know how we haven't come away from the game with something and we are extremely disappointed to not get what we deserve.

"It was a great opportunity today to pick some points up and push us up the table. When we were winning the match, if you would have looked at the table, we were right in amongst the rest of the sides.

"That's where we need to be. But we have to go back and go again as we won't give up on this and we need to try and take the positives from the game."

Thorn wasn't convinced that Town ought to have been awarded their spotkick: "It was disappointing to concede the penalty because it brought them back into the game. I have seen it again and it wasn't a penalty.

"I didn't think we played very well today - we didn't start well and we had a few words at half-time and we never started again in the second half. This was a big opportunity for us today and we should have taken it and we didn't.

"It is a cruel game but this is what we have to deal with. We have to go right to the final whistle and for this to happen to us twice in one week, it is hard to take. We need to improve late on and make sure we continue to push forward for the fans."

Rogie_dog - maybe even just one centre half. If smith plays with a solid, unflappable leader next to him he ain't too bad. Put him next to a hazard probe defender and the fear sets in!

Replace Sonko with McManas from Boro and happy days. See he's been dropped recently, although I don't think this coincides with Boros recent poor performances.

Excellent result today! Would have taken a win no matter what the performance. Let's build in this against boro with a big vocal home crowd next Saturday.
Here's hoping it starts to click all over the park and PH can change a few doubters minds.

Great to win away and score three goals in the process.

Really pleased especially for Drury and Hyam. I am not sure why Hyam has only been given a one year contract extension offer by the club and why it took so long for Jewell to give a chance.

Chops and JET scoring goals now and hopefully a big turnout next week as the club has finally cottoned on to the idea about having to do something positive about ticket prices.

We are not going down and we will not make the play offs this season, therefore the players should be going out relaxed and in a postive frame of mind for the rest of the games this season.

Onward and upwards.

Hyam will get a longer contract in the summer, if not before.

anyone seen that jas099 fella not a sound when we win two in a row, I'll compain as much as the next guy when we lose but got to praise the team when we win. COYB.

Defo need one new centre half and to play next to Smith as think he really does have potential, whereas Sonks (bless him) is a bit a bit of a liability although he does give everything for the team.

Did anyone else hear John Wark on Radio Suffolk saying that in his opinion Jaime Peters would make an excellent right back?? Could this be the answer to that obvious problem? It'd leave Carlos free to have space on the right as an attacking roaming player. What do others think? Anything John Wark thinks is well OK by me.

I know it was only the bottom team we beat but lets remember that this league is very tight and Coventry have to fight harder than anyone at the moment and it was away from home. Coventry had won their last 3 home games so based on form we had a very tough away game anyway.

It seems if we ever go behind we are very good at coming back as long as its not right at the end of the match and we are reduced to 10 men so I have high hopes for the future.

COYB!

Well with respect zebra I think Warky is very wrong.

I have seen a lot more of Peters and Edwards in that position than him (unless he goes to every home game?) and Edwards is a much much better candidate for the position.

Peters was never very good back there, and not quite good good enough, or atleast NOWHERE NEAR as good as Edwards going forward. I really don't think Carlos is far away from being a good full back. Not saying I wouldn't buy a conventional right back to compete for the position but the guy gets so much unwarranted stick. He can get caught out of position but what I like about him is he has the pace and tenacity to go and win it back, or at least slow the attack, and his ability to jink away from people is second to almost none in the squad, and this comes in extremely handy from his position. I wouldn't have the same confidence in Peters to do any of that really.

Happy Sunday, everybody. Seems like the Town mindset has changed at just the right time. Great to see Drury and Hyam driving things from midfield although the centre backs are still a concern. If we can plug the holes in our defence, we will really start to fly. Life is so much better when the blues win!

People may look at this fixture and expect a win with coventry being bottom of the league but no game is a garuenteed 3 points for any team ... as west ham will tell you . Fantastic result and really shows that we seem to have found something that we had been lacking all season . With Cov taking the lead on half time the Ips of 2 monts ago would of probably fell apart in the second half but we seem to have a new found belief . Credit to PJ and the team and also credit to the great fans who braved the artic conditions and done us proud . How nice to read through and not see jas0009 , daleyitfc and the other regular gloomsters talking crap . Nice to see warkywonderland positive comment , keep it going mate ............. ITFC FOREVER .... COYB !!!!!!!

I think some of the posters on here [ God rest their souls ] thought that the game yesterday was going to be a mere formality. Yes Coventry are bottom, but it must be remembered, that they don't want to be, hence their performance. For us to come from behind and win was really pleasing. On another point, West'am with ten men won, which puts our win against them midweek in an even better light. Well done all at ITFC, long may it continue

It doesn't matter when you score ... the important thing is we won 3-2! Well done to all.

Sonko remains a concern. I would have thought a new CB was essential in January. The penalty was sheer stupidity. The defending for their second was poor.

However, great finish by Chopra for the winner! Even though there was a touchof fortune for our first two goals.

What Sonko was thinking for the hand ball I have no idea.

But still, 3 points is 3 points.

Sonko has deteriated with the armband, make Drury captain, he seems a natural leader. Hopefully bring in Collins or similar to shore up defence, right back not essential of we sort centre two out..... just good to see us as we were earlier in the season, going behind but always looking like we can get back into the game rather run capitulating. Playing some lovely footie too, taken him a while but fingers crossed PJ has finally got it right..... with a good defence and the quality we have further up the pitch we really can crack on now. Top rem finish please!!

I doubt we would have even got relegated if we had still bean on our losing run, Bristol City have lost one of their only attacking threats , Milwall are so so , Nottingham Forest are just doing ridiculously poorly i still think they have on of the best teams. The same for Doncaster losing Billy Sharp almost condemned them. And Coventry are already relegated pretty much anyway. sooooo. GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!

throw in Bristol with the current bottom 3 and i think we can forget going down. Expect us to amble into a mid-table non-entity.

When Sky Sports News said of a last minute goal at the Ricoh my heart sank. But wow, it was for us for a change.
Chops showing what we knew he would - and I hope the doom merchants who included him on their "pj waste of money" list are feeling suitably foolish. He's always been class and a bargain at that price.
Top result.
Still would like to see 2 new CBs though.

Dozzells_Bobblehat added 16:45 - Feb 5
stinkiusminkius - totally agree about Chopra, if he can get his head sorted he is the best finisher in this league. Think PJ deserves some credit cos i have to be honest and say i would have started Scotland against West Ham , and i think most people would have but three goals in two games later - good call.
None of us are keen on loans but as posted on here previously i think we are two centre backs short of a good side, so get a couple in and then in the summer GK, and RB.
