Jewell Confirms New Deal for Edwards
Jewell Confirms New Deal for Edwards
Saturday, 10th Mar 2012 18:10

Town boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that skipper Carlos Edwards has been offered new terms, as reported by TWTD on Thursday.

Jewell said: “I think he’s been discussing it with [chief executive] Simon [Clegg] and as far as I’m aware things are moving on. Hopefully things will get done and that’s one of them out of the way.

“I think it’s a year with a clause for a further season, although I’m not 100% sure. We’d like to keep Carlos.

“I think Carlos has been quoted saying that he’s going to have to take a pay cut and a few players are going to have to do that with the Financial Fair Play thing coming in, the way the market is and the way the economy is.

“I think he’s 33 but he’s got the fitness levels of a 23-year-old. He’s a great mover, defensively he’s got better, he can get himself in bad positions but his pace has got him out of it. He’s been very consistent for us this year, Carlos.”

The Town boss played down recent reports of a renewed move for Portsmouth defender or midfielder Joel Ward, who was among the three Pompey players he was after in January: “I think what Portsmouth are doing is contacting teams but we’ve not made contact with Portsmouth.”

Another of those January targets, keeper Stephen Henderson, is set to leave Fratton Park for West Ham on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.

Henderson to West Ham, interesting stuff, you'd have thought he'd rather go somewhere he wouldn't just be used as cover, as far as Carlos goes though i'm really pleased to see this! Been a consistent performer this season and although he has his critics I think he's one of the best at the club!

I wonder if the fact West Ham would lose 6 points if Pompey went bust is why they have taken henderson on loan. Pay a loan fee of half a million, pick up his wages, he sits on the bench behind Green, end of the season they get promoted +£90m, send back henderson who has probabaly cost them £1m at most. £89m in the bank........ then again, suspect we'd do the same if we were down the bottom and the 6 points were as important!

Henderson came out bleating that he's loyal to Pompey, which is fair enough, but that the reason he wants to stay is to get 1st team football, so he moves to west ham to be rob green's under study for the next 3/4 years, well done.

Tbf I didn't want him anyway as I thought he wasnt good enough, so no great loss.

Rosseden if that's the case they did us a massive favour!! Carlos to me is player of year, yes he makes mistakes but turning into our most successful captain results wise this season and always gives 100% in a far from natural position.

Bluelady, Billm, if we were down near the bottom and 6 points could mean going down or staying up, i suspect we might do the same! all they have to do is get Pompey to see out april, im assuming they got some financier to look at the Pompey books, work out the shortfall and they plugged that gap with a deal.... very good business...... Southampton and Reading both lose less points than the hammers if Pompey go bust.......

Rossesden I'm agreeing and we would loose six points too so the spam have done us a massive favour that's all I'm saying... I suspect even losing six points we are safe but mayor squeaky bottom time!!!

Edwards deserves this deal and deserves to stay captain! Leadbitter did well today but is he staying or going? As for Henderson I couldn't be less bothered, I really hope we make a move for Brad Guzan!

I like to add that a certain Tom Eastman is getting man of the match awards for his consistent displays for Col U. We offered a one year deal he turned it down for 2 years with them. What are we short of at the moment, centre halves, what is Tom Eastman, yep you guessed it a centre half!
