Jewell: We Deserved Victory Saturday, 17th Mar 2012 17:57
Town boss Paul Jewell thought his side just about deserved their 3-2 home victory over Peterborough, despite the visitors having had the better of the first half.
Jewell said: “It was an entertaining game with both sides knowing what their strengths are, which is going forward and trying to score more than the opposition.
“I watched the tape of their Blackpool game yesterday and it could have been three-all after 10 minutes there was so much really good attacking play, it was so open.
“Yes, [it was like a basketball match early on] - we attacked, they attacked. I thought in the first half they were the better team, they shaded it.
“Even though we had some really good chances, so did they. But in the second half I thought we were the better team.
“We were hanging on in the final moments there and showed great character to come back from them equalising. We would definitely have lost that not so long ago.”
The Blues boss admits he’s rather too used to high scoring games involving his team: “There aren’t many games where we play out a comfortable 1-0 out here. We know that we need to tighten up defensively all over as a team, we’ve known that all season.
“But what we have got at the moment is goals, we’re creating chances. JET didn’t have a great game today, it wasn’t his day today, and he’s been a major part of our attacking force, but we still got three goals.”
Jewell says he switched his system around to counteract Peterborough’s midfield: “We changed our shape to match them up because they were causing us a few problems.
“JET wasn’t having the best game and so we matched them up in the middle of the park. You can say it worked, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I think it’s important that we scored two goals from set plays because they are vitally important.”
Michael Chopra had a few opportunities but failed to get on the scoresheet but his manager wasn’t too disappointed with his display: “I’d rather he missed them than not have the chance. He’s hit the bar, he’s hit one over the bar, he probably hit that too well.
"He could have scored two headers in the first half, although I know Tommy Rowe could have as well.
“I was just looking at the stats. They had 20 shots and we’ve had 14 or 15, so it must have been good for you guys.
“I think we deserved to win. Darren will have his thoughts on that, but I think what we did show was character.
“We were 1-0 up, they equalised, their first goal was a bit fortunate, then 2-1, then they scored again and then we’ve come back again.
“We had a little bit of fortune with the goal, there’s no doubt about that, but when we played down their place in the 7-1 game at least two of their goals were offside and I didn’t come in moaning and groaning about that.”
Jewell, who joked that Aaron Cresswell’s winner should go down as an own goal, says the left-back is suffering with a slight groin problem and Tommy Smith took a bit of a knock towards the end.
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson thought his team deserved something from the match: “We were certainly unlucky. We just didn’t score when we had control of the game. Before they scored their first we could have had two or three. I’d have to watch it again but I don’t think it was a game we deserved to lose.”

cheers bluelady, it was easy to be critical earlier in the season when we were getting turned over week in, week out but if we'd won say another 3 games we'd be just a couple of points outside the play off spots now. I was never in the Jewell out camp, but was starting to head towards it, now instead of conceding in the last 10, then conceding again we now go get another to get the win, as I was saying, pretty football doesn't always win matches and if we can't be good then I'd settle for grinding out results. How many titles have Man Utd won in that way? They've had plenty of games where they've not been in it, but through sheer detemination they grind out the result and that's what we're starting to do. The beer goes down nicely tonight!!!!

Who cares if we did not deserve to win, we got the 3 points and for once a little bit of luck went our way.

I can only listen via the web, I would like to know what people think about Luke Hyam, I know that Leadbitter is scoring goals but do you think we are too open without Hyam sitting in front of the back four and is this effecting the way Dury and the rest of the forward players play? Eg JET
buryblue77 added 23:03 - Mar 17
michael, I think we are more creative with (an in form) Leadbitter, Hyam doesn't really offer the same end to end type of play that Leadbitter does, and I think his ability to break down attacks is almost as good as Hyam, just he has a more natural instinct to get forward. I see what you and others are saying about the lack of protection without a player like Hyam, but my thoughts are they are a little too one dimensional and Leadbitter compliments the attacking midfielders/forwards more so than an outright defensive midfielder.

Like the Man U comparison, buryblue77; we are becoming hard to beat which is not just a nice change from earlier in season but augers well for next season when to make a real push, we'll probably have to grind out a lot more like that. Couple of stats: over last 9 games we've best record in division behind Reading and (just) 1 pt behind Southampton. And ok our defence still needs sorting, but I think that's 11 conceded in those nine games- not bad especially as it includes some tough away fixtures.

Daley. Go forth & multiply. 3 more points, does nothing ever please you, were you actually at the game, do you ever go to matches. I doubt it.

Well done again, though it was a long 6 minutes of extra time! We conceded 2 but if it's any consolation, defence is easier to fix than attack...

Lucky or not, that'll do for me, I had this booked down as a hard fought draw ! Well done et al for the effort. Let's hope Tommy and Cressy are fit for the next outing.

I disagree with PJ - though for most of the game we were second best yesterday - looking like an average Championship side. Poor at times. Delighted with the win - but after the news about Fabrice Muamba it all seems rather irrelevant. Thoughts are with the Bolton Midfielder.

We have got to have luck on our side sometimes,, thank goodness it was there today.. Plenty of action in todays game, could have gone either way, but it was our day HOORAY !!!!! Volume of games are now beginning to catch up with the likes of Drury etc. ?????? Short rest before the next game Wed. I know It is a job to change a winning team, but it might happen for the Burnley game ?? we have several players who put in a lot of energy in the games and the rest period this time of the season might not be long enough. It is great though to be in a comfortable position in the league !!!!!!

It was a good entertaining game yesterday. I thought pboro looked really sharp in the first half and thought we had a better share in the second. We won yesterday with a few players having an off day is that the sign of a good team there? I think so. Let's keep the building going. COYB 3 points on Wednesday!

This is how i saw it yesterday. Jet didn't turn up and apart from doing nothing in attack he didn't track back to help Carlos cope with the dangerous Boyd. This meant that Tommy got drawn over to the right side a few times which left a gap or two in the middle where, i have to say, Delaney is just not good enough for this league. He only got by last season because McCauley nursed him through it and a right sided replacement must be our priority so that Tommy can move back on the left. Once this problem is one can address the subject of a new keeper, don't forget that up to December we had Stockdale who is reckoned to be one of the best in the country but look how many he let in. Even McCarthy got us out of jail a couple of times yesterday.

We've just won the game, stop bloody moaning! Drury got caught up with today, many games and fatigue. It happens! The main thing is, we have competition and people pushing people for places, that's what we need A great 3 points, I'd rather win playing poorly than lose playing superb. Enough said

Was hoping pre match for a bigger winning margin. Felt Peterboro played a very attacking game and am thus very pleased to have come away with 3 points. It is still a good turn around from losing 7-1 (ok with 9 players) to winning 3-2. Several players had an off game but those who didn't fought hard and it just paid off. Thought that PJ's substitutions helped alter the game too. Well played Town.

To you moaning mizzies that didn't think we deserved the win today did any of you actually go? Granted today some of the players were below par, but we still pulled off the win, that's down to team spirit something a few short weeks ago we lacked. If you can play like that and still achieve the result, it means we are not far short of a decent side. How often have you heard telly pundits say that about the likes of Man Utd, that they played poorly but got the result. At the end of the day results are what sends the team up the table. With the way Peterborough are going I think they could be potential promotion candidates next season.

What is with you lot - it is no wonder that the ground lacks volume when the pessimism is so vast. If you cannot get behind your team when we are winning what is the point of supporting them. Shape up or ship out and follow someone else as we can do without you!!

Gilo1973.... Such a good post. Lots of the negative posters on this site remind me of a joke without a punchline...they are pointless. I am all for constructive criticism, when deserved . But we have only lost once in nine games and won six , if that cannot incite a little positivity , then as you said, they can go and moan elsewhere...coyb
