Jewell: We Need to Be More Defensively-Minded Monday, 26th Mar 2012 09:23
Boss Paul Jewell said his Town side still need to be more defensively-minded after errors at the back led to the Blues losing another game from a winning position at Watford on Saturday. The 2-1 defeat was the fifth time Town had lost having been in front this season with a further three ending in draws, which adds up to 21 points dropped from winning positions over the campaign.
Jewell, whose side has now conceded 67 goals during 2011/12, more than anyone else in the Championship, says he and his staff continue to work on what’s been Town’s Achilles’ heel since he came to the club 14 months ago: “It’s something we’ve been trying to address for an awful long time, and it’s something that we will address and we are addressing. It’s an ongoing thing.
“It’s not just individuals, it’s the team. The whole team need to be more defensive-minded when the opposition have got the ball.”
Previously, the Town manager’s success at Wigan was based on a frugal defence — which included former Blue Jason De Vos — with the Latics conceding just 25 goals in their 2002/03 League One title season.

We conceded poor goals Saturday, but that's been the problem most of the season. If we had a strong defence we would probably be pushing for the play-offs or even going for top two. In the summer I think we will need the following in the summer PERMANENT signings: GK, 1-2 CB, RB, CM,ST. Should do it with maybe a couple of other additions to help strengthen in depth.

Jas- only time will tell with regard to PJ sorting the defence, but u would also be hugely disappointed if we start next season with the same defence. However, are you really saying we aren't attack minded? Cos if so I find that incredible . We have one of the best goalscoring records in the division and part of the reason we concede do many is cos so many if our players are attack minded. Both fullbacks get forward , jet, Martin, Murphy and drury are also very much offensive players. As for the hull match that was last august for gods sake . The fact you refer to RK as Roy suggests to me you were a fan, and probably part of why you slate PJ, but in my opinion we are now a far more entertaining team and I am much more positive now about the future than under keane.

Delaney can go as far as I'm concerned, keep hold of Smith...Carlos needs to be played further forwards and defo GK, RB and CB needed as so many people have been saying on this board for ages. This IS the first thing Jewell has to sort out this summer!

Cannot take anyone seriously who believes we were better off under Roy Keane. The myth that we were defensively sound under his management is just that, a myth. Add to that the inability to score a goal and we had a horrificly boring football team that didn't even play good football. Fans want entertainment (obviously results as well, recent results suggest this could come in time), you can't accuse PJ of failing to deliver this, though you will try Jas.

Dear Booble, Tyrone Barnett for example, probably doulded his wage from Crawley. Bit od gamble but worth more then £1m if he;s any good. There are always players in your price bracket, but can you choose the good ones, PJ?

How can PJ say this He picked the team Two attacking full backs, two attack minded central midfield players, plus 4 forwards. Don't get me wrong I like the system, but to moan about it afterwards makes my blood boil. Why did he not play Hyam from the start?

While we're on stats Jas a couple of interesting notes: 1. we've had 10 clean sheets this year, 4 of those from the current backline quad in the last 9 games. 2. if we compare clean sheets and 2 or more goals in a game that result in a loss Keane and Jewell have almost identical records over their last 18 months at the club (16 v 19 clean sheets & 23 v 25 losses with 2 more goals against). Considering Keane was sacked you would argue Jewell might be a little fortunate currently.

And whilst our fans slag off Smith they also make him man of the match regularly over recent games........ Oh the quality.
