Carson and Hyam Making Progress
Carson and Hyam Making Progress
Thursday, 12th Apr 2012 08:48

Blues boss Paul Jewell says young midfielders Josh Carson and Luke Hyam have made progress this season despite only rarely appearing in the first team. Carson, who was back in the side which lost 2-1 to Leicester on Monday, has made only six starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring twice, while Hyam has been in the XI seven times and has come off the bench once.

Despite this, Jewell says the duo are moving in the right direction: “I just had a chat with Luke and Josh Carson.

“I said to Josh that although he hasn’t played a lot of football, I’m really pleased with him. I know this sounds daft, but he’s made progress as a professional. His outlook in training is terrific.

“Luke Hyam is exactly the same and they both deserve credit because they’re good, young players who have got a really good attitude.

“They might not always be in the team at the moment, but they’re always in my thoughts and they’re always pushing people.”

The Blues boss admits that Hyam might have been on his way out of the club but a spell of good performances during January and February: “Luke, three months ago, before he got in the team, was probably looking to move on at the end of the season. He deserves great credit for turning it around here and he wants to get in the team.

“I’ve said to Josh, to keep fighting, keep working because whatever happens, if you’re not in the team, you’re always better off training properly and maturing as men as well as footballers.

In February, Carson signed a new contract keeping him at Portman Road until the summer of 2014, with the option of a further year, while Hyam put pen to paper on a deal until the end of next season.

Obviously hard work and a good attitude is not rewarded in Jewells eyes. Surely at this stage of the season we should be pushing these guys on and getting them on the Pitch to try things out instead of flogging away in midfield with the likes of Bowyer. I have my doubts about PJ's ability to change things when the game is going against us and to bring a few new players in.

It's good that Jewell has come out and said this. For me Carson should at least be on the bench every game and personally now the season is over I would start him ahead of Murphy - especially if we're not likely to sign Daryl in the summer.
As for Hyam, along with Drury, he effectively saved Jewell his job! We were a joke of a side before those 2 came in and I think he's been treated pretty badly to be dropped for Leadbitter and Bowyer - both of whom may not be at the club next season!
Hope they both play a much bigger role next season.

It's good to hear Jewell say this and both Josh and Luke will know they are moving forwards.

Good attitude in training will only get you so far though - i'm sure we would all have a great attitude in training if we got the chance to be professional footballers, but only 11 can play and that will usually be picked on those with the most ability and/or the right experience for the opposition being played.

I agree, Bowyer has looked poor in recent games and I will be very surprised to see him here next season.

Drury and Hyam will have a bigger role to play i'm sure next season. Drury was only missing against Leicester due to tiredness.

Carson, remember gave away the cheap freekick from which Leicester scored, when someone more experienced may not have done. He, unsurprisingly looked rusty and the thing he didn't do very well was track his man against Leicester, constantly letting the Leicester play break away. It will come with experience, but he isn't Lionel Messi yet and there are others in his position (JET and Murphy) who are playing better and deserve the shirt.

Carson and Hyam are making progress...... by playing fewer games for the first team than last season..good grief man what are you saying? I want PJ to succeed I really do as he's the ITFC manager but Im not his biggest fan, seems to give contracts and coaching jobs to his mates rather than on merit.

Another pathetic attempt to pretend he values youth how disillusioned the academy boys and staff must feel with this muppet in charge. It sadly has come to the point where if tese boys want a career they need to be brave and move on. This is the reason we are not route 1 the management are not interested in producing or utilising any young players cant wait for him to throw Lawrence in to try to back up his lies

I think PJ still harboured some hope of making the playoffs right up to the Leicester game - despite what he was saying publically - and that is the main reason we haven't seen too much of Carson & Hyam of late, that may change now.
I really like the type of player Hyam is and hope he is a fixture with this club for years to come. I agree with those who say that he was a major part of the reason why PJ is still in a job. He really helped to shore up a paperthin defence and add some element of stability which allowed the more creative players get on the ball with greater confidence. I also agree with the much smaller number of posters who have pointed out that he is not a game changing type player to spring from the bench and so the reduction from 7 to 5 subs this season has probably affected him more than most.
While we were set up to be a more attacking side to try & break into the playoffs with a late run of wins, I think he was always likely to lose out to Leadbitter, Bowyer and Stevenson; couple this with the improvement in our centre halves understanding over recent months (still a lot to do) and the need for Hyam was reduced even more. His inclusion or exclusion will continue to depend on how we are set up IMO.
Carson I'm a bit more confused by. He has bags of ability, but perhaps is the one that doesn't give his all in training. In the games he has played I have been disappointed by him as often as I have been impressed. I certainly wouldn't have been picking him over Murphy or JET since Christmas. I know he is young and has lots of potential but I wouldn't be on here screaming injustice and clammering for his inclusion based on what he has done this season. To be blunt, you could make just as good a case for Ellington based on his appearances and performances.

It's good to give the players credit for work which we don't see.

It's also a shame we don't see more of them on the pitch, but I can understand Carson's lack of 1st team chances as getting past JET has been hard of late.

Hyam should be a regular alongside Drury. I really can't see how LB and Leadhead can get by them both! We had a great run with them driving us forward and of late we've clearly missed Drury's perceptive and creative passing.

I'm liking what I see of RS although he is more huff and puff than craft and guile.

PJ does say he likes to stick with a winning team yet has jettisoned Hyam and Drury who (pretty much) saved his bacon!

Good to see Lawrence warming up with the team on Saturday.

just because they are making progress doesn't mean they should be in the first team.

p.j is saying they are getting better all the time and will be called upon when needed but untill then they have to continue improving.
yes they played more for the last manager but lets face it he didnt have a clue. roy keane is to blame for some of our youngsters falling behind in their footy career.

I cannot understand Mr Jewell sometimes. Why does he continue to select senior professionals, when lets face it, some of these so called senior professionals won't be around come the end of the season, surely he should be blooding the youngsters! Its not as if he protecting the youngsters like Sir Alex does!

It astounds me that Hyam hasnt played more games, Bowyer over Hyam, no brainer! I want to see wholesale changes next season, if we carry on as a mid table team, i fear Mr Jewell wont be around come December, speaking personnally that wont be a bad thing!

Bowyer & Leadbitter won't be here next season. Don't play them. We've got Drury, Bullard, Hyam & Stevenson who will be here next season. Play any two of them instead - it's a no brainer. Everyone knows that except for PJ. We need to stick with PJ because we don't want wholesale changes a new manager would bring, but he does worry me with his "mistakes" and strange decisions.

It is good that Jewell has said this but have to say I have been disappointed in Jewell, that he dropped Luke Hyam, if it wasn't for him and Drury he wouldn't be in a job now. For me Bowyer offers nothing he is to old and has no pace. I know Leadbitter has been playing well lately, for me hasn't done enough since he has been here, another player on high wages and cost a lot of money, I would let both go at the end of the season, Drury offers more creativity and Hyam gives more energy. Would give Carson games to, young players need games. Just hope Jewell goes and gets more young player lower league, its the only way forward to build a team, look at Norwich they are way ahead of us. Not sure that is the Jewell way, only time will tell, lets hope so!

With a chance of the play offs and threat of relegation- however slim, Jewell has had to play his best team. Leadbitter is better than Hyam, Murphy more reliable than Carson.
Hyams form was dipping when Leadbitter came in - I thought Hyam was way below par at Brighton and he looked like he needed a rest- same for drury. Now is the time though to give both a run in the side to improve, learn and show what they can do. Honestly I am yet to be totally convinced by either especially Carson.

In response to Blue Boy- I think Jewell has changed things at half time this year and it has resulted in us getting points, southampton away, Hull away, Petrborough home all saw tactical changes and improved second halfs- of course we have recently seen it go the other way. I think the main factor is that we are not very good, we need a goalie, a center back who is an organiser and probably a new centre mid- the fact that we do not have these poistions filled I agree is jewells fault.

The treatment of Drury, Carson, Hyam and to a certain extent Martin has been nothing short of disgusting. Playing well and then needlessly dropped from the match day team is completely unacceptable. People can convince themselves otherwise if they like (and let's face it certain posters on here seem to think the season started 31 Jan 12 - not last August) - but PJ must be destroying these young guys confidence. What has Hyam done wrong to not even be on the bench - ditto Carson? Now, after being left out for so long, with confidence low, we expect these young players to be recalled and perform. No. It's PJ's fault. Terrible management from an apparent 'arm round the shoulder' manager.

I really believe we have the potential and with the right keeper, CB's and possible striker think we could move forward next year - but not with PJ at the helm.

PJ - "They might not always be in the team" why not as regards to Hyam? he was one of the pivotal midfielders that started us on the fairly good run that got us away from the relegation zone, ok maybe a game rested but he hasn't been seen since!! - very strange.

Jas, being left out of a football team doesn't really constitute "disgusting" treatment. Also, try reading Drury's comments in the other article posted...doesn't sound like he was disgusted to me...quite the opposite in fact.

Jewell's treatment of Hyam is one of the many oddities of Jewell's reign.

Personally i'm fine with the way Hyam has been treated. Although i'd like to have seen him included more often this season, i think people underestimate how important a role that is within any side especially that of a side in a rough and tumble league like the Championship.

Playing 50 games a season is beyond a 20 year old playing in that position for me. While Bowyer has been far from spectacular this season, his experience has been required in some games and he has put in some good shifts.

Hyam was poor against Brighton when he was subsequently dropped. He chased shadow for the 60 minutes he was on the pitch which is a perfect example of why spells in and out of the side would do him good. I'd like to see him back in the side for the last 4 games though alongside Drury.

Looking at the season as a whole i wouldn't renew Bowyer's contract. Sammy Clingan will be cheap when Coventry go down and Green is on a free from Derby who would be perfect replacements and good mentors for Hyam next season.

Hyam and Drury saved Jewells job for him but if Crawley had come up with the right offer Drury would not have even been at the club beyond January and Hyam would be on his way in a few weeks time as well.

Based on Jewells performance at ITFC so far I do not see him as the man to take us forward and given the number of people I know who are not renewing their season tickets this year neither do many others!
