Jewell: We Did Enough to Win
Jewell: We Did Enough to Win
Saturday, 14th Apr 2012 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved more than just a point from their trip to Crystal Palace. Jason Scotland’s second half goal saw Town to a 1-1 draw after Chris Martin had put the Eagles in front during a first period in which the Blues were very much on top.

Jewell said: “I thought we dominated the first half completely. They had a chance for Darren Ambrose and the goal, but I thought we were outstanding football-wise. The only thing that was missing was that killer instinct.

“We had 10 crosses and 10 shots as the away team. We passed the ball really well. The only thing that was missing was a goal. I don’t think it was a fair result, but you’re never disappointed when you come from behind.”

He felt the first half performance was one of his team’s best passing displays of the campaign: “I don’t know what the possession stats were but sometimes we were overpassing it. There were some quality balls going across the box, but we didn’t have enough devilment.

“I know we’re talking about a world class striker, but someone like Shearer would have had a hat-trick today with the balls going across the box.

“We’ve got to want to score more goals and get across people in the box. Arran’s made a good save at 0-0 from Ambrose but other than that and the goal, I don’t think they’ve really had a shot.”

The Blues boss says his players have got to be prepared to put their heads in where it hurts inside the penalty area: “To score goals you’ve got to get a cut eye - you get your just rewards if you’re brave.

"I’m not going to be too critical of the players but the only thing missing, certainly in the first half was that. We had 10 crosses go in from those crosses I don’t think we made the keeper make a save.

“We had plenty of shots, twice as many as them but, even though we’ve scored a lot of goals this year, in the last five or six games we’ve struggled because we’ve had lots of possession but we haven’t made it count.”

Jewell had praise for scorer Scotland, who he believed came close to a goal in the first half when his volley was stopped by Julian Speroni: “Their keeper made a fantastic save from Jason in the first half when he tipped it around the post and it was a really good goal.

“I thought we had our worst spell just after we scored. They’re a hard team to play against Palace. I think Dougie’s done a great job here. They hit you on the break and counter-attack with their pace, but I thought we played well today.”

The Liverpudlian had praise for central midfield pairing Grant Leadbitter and Andy Drury, who he said ran the first half: “I though Grant and Andy Drury were terrific in the middle of the park. We got the ball wide, we got crosses in. I couldn’t be critical of them in the first half other than that we were a goal down and asking them how much we want to score goals.”

Jewell says he has no new injuries from today’s game but that keeper Richard Wright tore his cartilage in training: “He had a scan on Thursday afternoon and it revealed a little nick in his cartilage and looks like he’ll probably need a scope.”

Wright would appear unlikely to feature again this season with his third spell at the club set to come to an end this summer.

Palace boss Dougie Freedman felt the game ended in the right scoreline: “I thought it was a fair result. We’re a little bit disappointed after taking the lead.

“But I felt that Ipswich had a very experienced side out there today and it was hard to cope with them at times, very clever movement from them.

“Maybe when you look back on it it was a good point. It stopped the rut that we’ve been in for the last three or four games.”

Not a bad result, not a particularly impressive one.

Sign Scotland. 8 goals now from not that many starts.

"You're never disappointed when you come from behind" Too true Paul, too true.

Sounds like a good performance and a point at Palace isn't bad so I am not unhappy with that.

Sounds like we need a striker then Jewell, you said this last season, you gave us Ellington! Walk the walk, dont just talk the talk.

And we did enough to lose.

Same sh*t, different day.............could of/should of/would of. This is not the first time we have squandered points in this fashion and it won't be the last.

7 new signings still needed to get us out of this league - a strike partner for Chopra, is one of them.

Palace had taken just one point from their last fifteen - so this is hardly a good result. A win and two draws from our last two games will ensure we have the same points tally as last season. Good enough considering PJ had half a season prior to this one to sort things out ... ? Not in my opinion I'm afraid. No doubt people will slate me, but with Bowyer leaving in the Summer - why was Hyam not even on the bench? Why is Murphy (loanee) playing - he won't return? I understand playing Leadbitter and Scotland, because PJ wants to sign them - but I suspect both will leave (sadly).

Some people may be happy with 15th - 5 points short of last years tally (where at least we reached the semi final of the league cup - knocked out of both cups at first attempt this year) - but I think it's very very poor. Same old comments from PJ who frankly is lucky to be in the job (he is thanks to Hyam - but let's not go there ... ). PJ is a great talker - I'll give him that!

Jas we missed a killer instinct upfront and maybe a more creative force, Hyam is NEITHER of those things. If he's not going to start (and he won't ahead of Drury/Leadbitter atm) then there is no point in putting him on the bench.

And clearly Jewell does want to sign Murphy, and while he is still useful to us and better than Carson which he is, he should play.

If you gave me option of seeing Hyam and Carson play every remaining minute of the season, but not picking up another point, or watching Bowyer and Murphy and picking up maximum points...I would take the second option. This 'playing youngsters for the sake of it' thing is really starting to annoy me.

this is going to sound hilarious, but i really do believe we are one of the strongest teams in the championship. we NEED a goalscorer. yes, chopra is a goalscorer, but look how many chances we've had. i was looking on the bbc stats of each game, and we've dominated the last 8 games. we've had more shots, and on most of them, more possession. if we get in a proven goalscorer, chad evans anyone? i really can see us in the premiership the next after next. also a good right back, and centre back, krystian pearce, and matthew low ton anyone? and maybe get in kieron westwood. my dream that would be, but just get in someone who puts the ball in the back of that net!! COYB!<3 in jewell we trust!

And so Richard Wright's career at Town comes to an end, not with a bang but with a whimper. He could have been one of our greatest ever but went astray. I'll always try to remember him for Wembley 2000 and all that led up to it, but I'm afraid I will really remember his career as a disappointment: a player who let us and himself down. Sad.

Great goal from Scotland. Apart from that not much to say.
Need to win 2-3 of the remaining games other wise we won't be finishing well at all.

Before the match Mr Jewell said that getting the results was more important than giving the youngsters a few games. Well, in the event we didn't get three points and we didn't use the youngsters. What have we achieved? One point and nothing else.

This game was irrelevant, here's to next seasons "We should/could/would" comments from Jewell.

What we need for next season is a big tall strong centre forward, Chopra and Scotland would score far more goals if they had a big man alongside them. If only we had signed Jason Roberts instead of Ellington.

Looks like we're going into a run of mundane end of season 'nothing to play for' results. Palace are hardly a form horse at the moment and neither was Boro when we played them but at least we haven't been beaten.

A bit off record but Just for the book:
2006/7 - 14TH
2007/8 - 8TH (Magilton)
2008/9 - 9TH (Magilton)
2009/10 - 15TH (Dark Lord)
2010/11 - 13TH (Dark Lord/PJ)
2011/12 - somewhere between 12TH -16TH (PJ)

What you have to ask yourself has progress been made since Magiltons departure?
0

buryblue77 added 19:22 - Apr 14
Timmy, no progress has been made since Magilton left and I'm sure he could have taken us further, however Evans wanted a high profile name and enter Keane, that's where it all went wrong. He took us so far back that there's a lot of work to be done to even get us back into a top half finish.

At least we are now creating loads of chances. Only 5 teams have scored more than us in the Championship. Reading being one of them with 1 goal more. With a couple of signing of defenders and goalkeeper we will be flying high next season and with better defending next season we will be in with a shout of promotion.

Scoring goals is no longer a problem, it is keeping them out that is a problem and I expect PJ to sort this before August.

CornardBlue Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Garv - you cannot carry the points through to next season so they are now irrelevant. However you can carry the experience and learning through to next season. Therefore learning and developing for next season is far more important than picking up meaningless points now. Why put players in who either we know all about or will not be playing here next season?
0

buryblue77 added 19:33 - Apr 14
alfromcol, whilst overall scoring isn't a problem, it suddenly seems to be again, we just don't seem to be clinical enough over the last few games and should have had a couple more today. An in form Chopra would have probably bagged a couple, but for some reason he doesn't seem consistent enough.

A pretty good performance in my view in what was, and judging by the comments on here so far, has turned out to be a 'can't win' game. Even if we had won handsomely the result would have been put down to Palace's poor form or that the game was meaningless. As it was I thought we were quite lively and if we had taken any of the decent chances we had we probably would have won comfortably. Therein lies the rub. We need to increase the goals to chances percentage if we are truly going to challenge for promotion.

TimmyH added 19:37 - Apr 14
That's true - bury, but yet again isn't it a case this club has never worked that well when we have had money to spend (in the transfer market)? we've always suceeded best when we've had a mix of local players, lads that have come through the academy and some shrewd not overexpensive signings. I think it's a case we still haven't got the correct manager in place, PJ made some massive blunders on transfers last summer with Dads Army, and surely if we have 'progressed forwards' since the New Year as PJ and some like to think on here then the proof of the pudding will be the start of next season, if this doesn't happen surely PJ should go as well?
