Wickham Linked With Town Return
Wickham Linked With Town Return
Sunday, 29th Apr 2012 10:12

Former Blue Connor Wickham is being linked with a summer return to Town by reports in the North-East. The 19-year-old joined Sunderland last summer for an initial fee of £8.1 million but has made only six starts and 12 sub appearances this season, scoring one goal.

Blues boss Paul Jewell is said to have previously enquired about the possibility of Wickham returning on loan two months after the striker’s move but with then-Black Cats manager Steve Bruce not keen.

However, current boss Martin O’Neill is believed to be more open to the idea of a temporary switch, feeling that the England U21 international needs to play more first team football before he is ready to be a regular in the Premier League with Town likely to head the clubs interested in taking him.

Jewell said on Thursday that he has already made enquiries about bringing Premier League players in on loan for next season: “That’s one route that we’re looking at. The problem is getting in quickly. I spoke to a club yesterday about a couple of their young players and the queue’s a mile long.”

alfromcol - they went because they were on big money, all i imagine were offered contracts on reduced terms.
Loans are not the way.
Bring in some lower league talent, who are eager to earn a chance and prove themselves at championship level.
Much easier said than done, not sure Jewel has it in him to spot raw potential.

A very good unlikely story BUT why do we want him back ? appears not that good. A world class off load by Ipswich.

Keaneish - say Chopra scores 20 next season and we go up, do you think he'd be good enough to be our main striker in the premier league? Just a scenario. You might think he would, but I would disagree.

We won't be going up anyway so I think its quite pointless talking about it. I think Wickham would be good for us and help us improve on our recent seasons, and thats ultimately what we all want to achieve, actually properly move forward. Sneaking the play offs would be a lovely bonus.

Murphy and Scotland will be picked up by an ambitious Championship club in the top half of the table.

The usual unanimity on here!

As part of an overall programme of summer ins and outs , this would definitely get my vote on the grounds that....

a) we will not be able to attract any of the "proven " goalscorers mooted on here, lower leagues or not. Just look at our track record on this (Austin et al) and how little money will be available. Pie in the sky.
b) he will be cheaper and more effective than Murphy
c) he will be coming home and we will provide perfect opportunity for him.
d) he'll want to come here to play
e) on a season long basis , it avoids the transient , transactionalism you get with loan players some times.
f) he would leave funds (fee & wages) available to spend on goalkeeper and defenders.

So, yes please.

I think that I,m being a bit thick but I do not get the concern over getting wicks am back.
At the beginning of the season this board was rammed with the moaners saying that the club lacks ambition getting rid of him....now we want him back they are moaning still
The fact of financial fair play we can no longer afford to take the Risk of the like of leadboots spend all that money and not get a penny in return if they see their contract out...the money lost would stil count as spent and therefore restrict us in further transfer dealings
What better loan player than to have an ex Ipswich player back...and one despite his young age who clearly loved the club....he knows the set up knows how well we furthered his game so will be excited about working with us again.
If he gets us promoted then surely we could put in a bid for him as we will then have the money....if not we still have transfer money to spend and we don't have to be lumbered with massive wages
And if he comes it will surely demonstrate some desire and attract other players
STOP MOANING and get behind the team and think about the posts that are being written......cannot possibly cope with a summer of doomand gloom....COYB

Steelmonkey

Norris and Leadboots had made their minds up months ago that they would run their contracts down and leave and the club could do nothing about it.

No one can convince me that Leadboots has walked out of a job without having another one to go to!

No i don't think he would either Garv but i think if PJ can get the right type of player for him to play alongside, the combination might be what works at this level and with an understanding already built up, maybe it'll work in the Prem. He was scoring at roughly the same rate for Cardiff (a little less per game-ratio here) but Bothroyd was also hitting the mark, so, on that basis, maybe someone in the mould of Bothroyd...or Bothroyd himself when QPR come down for him to play alongside.

It'll be interesting to see how Lambert and Sharp fair for Southampton in the Prem next season.

I know Bothroyd hasn't hit the mark for QPR on his own, but the point i'm making is about a partnership and understanding rather than the individual carrying the weight on their own. I think these two banged in nearly 40 goals for Cardiff last campaign!

I'd personally be in favour of this for reasons already mentioned - somebody to play off Chopra is badly needed, and not to mention he knows the club etc.

I think it was alfromcol who made the point that we've lost our own players before - if it was a season long loan with no recall option, I don't see the problem. I do agree that anything else is pointless. But with Hyam signing a 1 year deal, if this was a season long loan, it's essentially the same thing. Sonko just left, Bowyer just left. They were "permanent", but might as well have been season long loans.

Keaneish I agree with your shout for Bothroyd. Wages would be difficult but I'd love to see that happen.

You obviously don't think Wickham is good enough to partner Chopra. I think he could be. I think he could also, as you say a partner needs to, chip in with a few himself as he did last season. And a season in the premier league can't have hurt can it?

Every team in the Championship will have loanees - and ipswich will be one of them. What we need to make sure is that the loanees we get are of value to the team and also improve the overall squad.

I do not see Wickham as the answer to our prayers. He was very raw when he left with a lot of potential. He has not played enough games since he left to have improved considerably, however, if Sunderland pay at least half his wages then i would be prepared to take a gamble on him.

Lets hope Jewell makes shrewd signings on promising youngsters with a couple of experienced players (age 26-29 for outfield players and max goalie age of 31).

I'd like to see someone proven play alongside Chopra though Garv. I've no doubt Wickham will get a few goals for us in a full season but it's a risk and i don't think PJ can afford risks anymore. No doubt Wickham is an exceptional talent but i'd rather have someone who's used to hitting the net week-in-week-out.

On another transfer note, i saw Ben Parker has been released by Leeds and would be great cover at only 24 for Cressie and could even be an option as full back to use Cressie as a left mid? Parker's a solid left-back who's been unlucky with injury. Maybe worth a punt?

Over-rated and gone. Bigger fools Sunderland if they thought he was worth £8.1m upfront.
One or two experienced loan signings makes sense but all we'd be doing with Wickham is further developing him - let Sunderland pay for that = Wickham chose to chase the dollar, why would we want to entertain him?Its nothing to do with 'the badge' - those of you that believe players will play for ITFC or the badge with passion are seriously deluded: No pro footballer has done that for years and years. Ask yourselves a question: would you go to work on Monday morning for the love of the company you work for? Didn't think so, about time you all grew up. Do you really believe it when a player kisses the badge?? Hype, nonsense and frankly bollox.

Garv added 02:40 - Apr 30
Devon that's because the vast majority of people never end up doing what they've always wanted to do. Most, if not all footballers have always wanted to be footballers.

How do you know what Wickham's feeling is forwards the club? We are, after all the club that produced him.

God,please no, thought we had seen the last of this 20 goal a season striker. He made his decision to play reserve team football and warm the bench.........leave him be.

DiamondGezzer added 07:18 - Apr 30
A likeable lad but not the next young striker for us. Need someone to keep Chopra on his toes or to partner Scotland, who in my opinion, has not had the plaudits he deserved this season.

Karlosfandangal added 08:53 - Apr 30
Its all about money

Everyone saw he would be a bench warmer exceot Wickham his dad and his agent,

We all said another year in the Championship would help him. We need players who can play in the prem for us not to progress players for other clubs just so we can send them back

rickw added 09:29 - Apr 30
I agree with Wahbrook blue - think of him as a replacement for Murphy - he'll score more than Murphy and he's still improving....

As he won't cost anything it will also allow us to spend the little money we have on a quality keeper and 2 decent defenders

Financial fair play model = more loan players.

Surco72 added 10:18 - Apr 30
More and more teams will need to depend on loans rather than being tied down to expensive mercenary flops who will run down their big contracts due to the financial climate .Even premier teams are relying on loan deals Bendter,OHara,Santos etc that is just the way it is .
And the aim is short term to get out of this division ,and then get new players for the premiership if you want to stay there like every club that gets promotion,so getting loan players is the better option to do this and Wickham an ex player would be more passionate about the club than most loanees surely ?

docsavage52 added 12:47 - Apr 30
We need players that want to play for the club, the likes of Cresswell who has done well since his move up to the championship. We dont need overrated players who are happy to take the wages and do nothing.

TractorTrog added 17:04 - Apr 30
I personaly have no problem with Wickham coming in to do the job ...what is important is not to build the play souly around a loan player that is to say that we need it as an addition to our play...most clubs look for loans so nothing new in us trying to aquire either....I think the main thing of concern for some that have not liked the idea is that they feel the team is incomplete right now and we need to address permanant signings and not stop gaps however getting in loanes gives PJ a bit more time to be selective over who he signs Im sure he will address the postions we all know he needs to this is really just giving us a bit more fire power and yes ill be cheering if he comes down...COYB
