Town Face Battle for Keeper Kuszczak Tuesday, 1st May 2012 12:35
Town face stiff opposition for Tomasz Kuszczak’s signature with Spurs, QPR, Fulham, Werder Bremen and even Bayern Munich all reported to also be showing interest in the out-of-contract Manchester United keeper.
The 30-year-old Pole, who ended the season on loan at Watford, is understood to be top of Paul Jewell’s summer wish list as he looks to add a permanent number one to his squad ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.
At most of those clubs Kuszczak would be the second-choice, as he has been throughout his time at Old Trafford, and the former West Brom man says he wants to play more regularly at this stage of his career: "I have decided to move [from Manchester United] and be a first-choice keeper. I do not want to be a replacement any longer.
"My family like England as much as me," he added. "I think that I know the style of play and I have made my name here. But I have serious options in Germany to consider as well. My agent is working on a possible move to the Bundesliga."
Kuszczak also revealed that he had chances to moved to Aston Villa or rejoin the Baggies last summer.
Birmingham’s Colin Doyle has also been linked with the Blues but was not the keeper Jewell met for talks last Thursday.
Meanwhile, Doncaster midfielder James Coppinger has conceded that he may move on from the relegated Rovers this summer and wouldn’t be averse to relocating to Suffolk if Town renewed last year’s interest: “I think Ipswich is a great club. I have some friends who have played at Ipswich in the past and they speak highly of the club and the place.
“With them being in the Championship and an ambitious club, it is always somewhere you would look to go.”
However, speaking after Saturday’s game, Blues boss Paul Jewell played down the likelihood of Town doing a deal for the 31-year-old, having previously said he’d speak to Rovers manager Dean Saunders about the former Exeter man: “I don’t think so. We’d like good players, he’s a good player, Coppinger, but I don’t think so.”
Elsewhere, former Blues coach and assistant manager John Gorman has decided to retire at the end of the season. Gorman, 62, worked under George Burley and then had a second spell at the club during Jim Magilton’s time in charge. The Scot is currently assisting Karl Robinson at MK Dons.

Umros, it wasn't a statement. It was a case of Jewell playing his cards as close as he possibly could to his chest in a post match radio interview. If he'd have said "yeah we'd love to have him" the price would have immediately doubled. Please use the common sense you were born with Thankyou

buryblue: Ah but have you ever met a Watford supporter with any sense?!! My three were actually in order of preference! A Villa mate reckons Guzan is a really class act but understandably doesnt want to continue to play second fiddle to Given. Plus rumour has it that he doesn't get on with McCleish - but not sure who does anyway!

Stop wasting time on ridiculous targets Jewell!..you did this last summer with the likes of Woodgate & Upson etc and we ended up short on numbers. Go for Westwood of Sunderland.

Urchin, got me there on the Watford fans lol I think I'd personally go for Guzan over Kuszczak, hopefully he's as good as the other American keepers who have played over here recently. At least Jewell is on the lookout for a good keeper to be contracted to us. I'm not usually the cynical type and a self confessed pro PJer, but I hope this keeper talk isn't all a smokescreen, i.e. when we don't get who we wanted and end up with someone like McCarthy back on loan, Jewell can say he made efforts early on but the deals couldn't be done.

Westwood from Sunderland is a great shout. Probably third choice behind Minolet and Craig Gordan (fit again and started on saturday i believe). May be able to convince to become first choice elsewhere. For those who were at the keep moat on saturday , Coppinger was excellent on the ball with a very creative brain. Chopra is every bit as good as Billy Sharp when it comes to finishing but requires quality service which is what he is guaranteed to provide. There needs to be a blend of youth and experience in any team and the balance is important.Look at Reading , championship winners ,Jobi McAnuff 30, Kaspars Gorkss 30,Ian Harte 34, Jason Roberts 33 (Also Andy Giffin 78 ! ). All 4 examples were massive to their success, the importance is the balance.

Kuszczak said first team football is important to him and of all the clubs mentioned we're the only ones who can guarentee that to him. He might change his mind when some of those richer clubs offer him double or treble what we do to warm their bench!! He is a good keeper, was very impressive for West Brom, which is why Man Utd signed him. However if it falls through then I'd be happy with Lewis, Guzan or Loach, not really Doyle though..... Westwood chose Sunderland over us last year because of the money, nothing has changed so I can't see that idea happening...
