Town Continue to Eye Newport Defender
Town Continue to Eye Newport Defender
Friday, 11th May 2012 11:16

Town have continued to monitor 19-year-old Newport County left-back or centre-half Andrew Hughes, according to reports in Wales. Coventry City, Wolves, Charlton Athletic and the former Wales Schoolboys international’s previous club Cardiff are also said to have been keeping an eye on the 6ft 2in tall defender.

The Blues were previously mentioned in connection with Hughes in November when the Addicks and Sky Blues were also linked.

The Welshman was with Cardiff as a schoolboy before joining Blue Square Bet Premier club Newport’s youth set-up. Contracted until June 2014, he has made 43 appearances this season.

Hughes is set to start for Newport in Saturday’s FA Trophy final against York City at Wembley.

Don't know anything about him, but hopefully he will be another Cressy. We do need another LB as it's clear Whight isn't ready/not fancied but we are also a bit left sided heavy in the CB stakes. Hopefully he (if it is true) would be an addition to the main priority in defence which is RB/RCB.

Good to see we are being linked with a lot more youngsters but as we know links mean nothing (especially when leeds are about!) really need to sign one of these guys we are being linked with or I can see them all going elsewhere. COYB

Is it me or does he look like a cross between Tommy Smity & Cressy??

Would be worth a punt on the lad.

I disagree. I think he looks like he's about to projectile vomit rather than fall over ;)

projectile vomit then fall over, he'll fit in well with the ITFC drinking culture lol

Now I'm confused ... if Tommy Smith is the player for the future and he is left footed ... why are we looking at left footed centre backs? Sorry but it is Delaney who is most urgent to replace for me with a solid and Dominant CB.

Am I missing something guys?

Have a good weekend one and all.

A young player - maybe as back-up or for the future? Have never seen him play so can't comment on ability - but can't possibly be worse than some of PJ's gems to date i.e. Ingimarrsson!

raymondovic, Delany is also left footed and can (apparently) play LB so he would be a direct replacement. However as I've said, RB and RCB are the defensive priorities.

Would be one for the future if we did go for him - no point expecting him to make an instant impact after stepping up from the Conference!

Karleigh Osborne (Brentford) and Mark Ellis (Torquay) are both highly rated and (I believe) available on free transfers and may be worth a punt? Still think it might be worth equiring after Ryan Nelson as well!

glad to see ipswich are going for good quality players who have proved themselfs in a very tough league no wonder noone wants to sign for us doesn't exactly show much ambition does it we get fed the same old horse manure every year and end up signing donkeys ( except cressie ) i'm unemployed and except for a few home games last season went to everyone but i won't be wasting my time or petrol next year if we don't sign anyone with any form and i don't mean old has beens and never has been.
