Morgan to Step Down
Morgan to Step Down

Town have announced that Academy manager Sammy Morgan will be stepping down at the end of the month. Former Northern Ireland international striker Morgan, 65, has been at Playford Road since 2004, initially as head of education, stepping into his current role in 2009.

Morgan said: “I have been proud and privileged to have led the Academy over recent years, but the introduction of EPPP is an opportune moment to hand over the reins and responsibilities.

“With the knowledge and experience I have gained over the years I look forward to continuing my involvement in the game. I am extremely proud of my association with Ipswich Town and my contribution to the Academy.

“I look forward to following their fortunes in the future particularly with reference to those young players who have come through or who are presently in the Academy system.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg added: “I’d like to thank Sammy Morgan for his huge contribution to our Academy over the last eight years.

“Over this time he has been responsible for developing a number of high profile players, including Connor Wickham and I know that many are extremely grateful for his support and guidance. On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to wish him well for new challenges that may lie ahead.”

The EPPP reorganisation of youth football will see additional numbers added to the Academy staff over the summer with the Blues opting for Category Two.

Morgan, who was with Aston Villa, Port Vale, Brighton, Cambridge, Sparta Rotterdam, Groningen and Gorleston in his playing days, was previously with Norwich’s Academy and has also worked as a teacher in Gorleston.

ITFCsince67-
Thats the kind of low, senseless idiotic comments from the supposed supporters (67? REALLY?) that I hate.
Ask the likes of Wickham, Trotter, Rhodes, Garvan, Barron etc etc if they think this man's aid in the development of their football was "very poor".

Played against Sammy for Bury Town v Gorleston many years ago. We had 2 centre backs called Neil and Trevor. Even with his Irish accent, he managed to minic their shouts and after 15 mins shouted 'my ball Neil' as a cross came in and promptly managed slot the ball in the net as Neil and Trevor stared at each shouting at each as to why Neil let the ball run. Street wise old pro.

Calling "My ball" is a bookable offence.

Notice he is 65 which used to be the retirement age until recently.I was lucky to be able to leave my proper job when only 53;so Sammy should be looking forward to retirement if he can afford to.Good luck anyway.

Good luck to you Sammy you were a real gent to the Academy lad's. They will miss you the most.I cant help thinking there was more to you leaving than the introduction of EPPP. Strange things have been happening with the Academy recently, this seem's like another. Anyway do hope you find what you will be looking for in the near future. COYB

God I see all the Grim Reapers are online again. honestly dont know why some of you lot bother coming on here! (bluey123,ITFCsince67) whats the point on just coming on here and having a go! He was the Youth Coach for gods sake not Chairmen or Manager!

Good luck to him in his likely retirement, brought through some decent players and with the new system perhaps time to bring in a younger guy, Klug would be great but doubt he will after the way he was treated before.

Sounds like he's not a great fan of the new EPPP so wants to give the job up. Neither am I, it all seems to easily geared towards the big clubs so cant say I blame him.
Thanks and all the best for the future!!

Thankyou Sammy for all the hard work you put in behind the scenes for our youngsters. I would love us now to try and persuade Brian Klug to return to what Sir Bobby would say 'his baby' and lead The Academy.

My personal best wishes Sammy for whatever the future holds for you, and many thanks for all the help and coaching you gave my son at Cambridge, Norwich, and Ipswich - he didn't make the grade at professional level but thanks to you he is playing a good standard of football that he is enjoying.
Grateful thanks to you from the whole family.

A good man - a good Coach.
Sadly more of the 'pedigree' gone from the Club.
