Town and Celtic Set for Murphy Talks
Town and Celtic Set for Murphy Talks
Saturday, 2nd Jun 2012 20:20

TWTD understands that Town and Celtic will hold further talks regarding Daryl Murphy’s future next week. The 29-year-old looks set to rejoin the Blues on a permanent basis this summer having spent 2011/12 on loan at Portman Road for the second time.

Town boss Paul Jewell initially played down the chances of the Celtic frontman returning to the Blues but when speaking to TWTD a month ago chief executive Simon Clegg hinted that a deal could still be done.

The Bhoys are believed to want £300,000 for the striker or midfielder, who was previously on loan at Portman Road in 2010 when a Sunderland player, but ultimately could allow him to leave on a free transfer to get the remaining year of his contract off their wage bill. Murphy is likely to have to take a significant pay cut to return to Portman Road.

Murphy, who also had trials with the Blues in the 2004/05 season before opting to join the Black Cats from hometown club Waterford United, who we understand he joined for a couple of training sessions last week, made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town during 2011/12, scoring four goals.

Sources close to Murphy have told TWTD that the nine-times-capped Irish international and his family are keen to stay in Suffolk.

Great news!

Endless reasons why Murphy would be a good signing:

- Despite what an incredible number of idiots say, the man does have pace, beating full backs every week and putting crosses in, and much more frequently than Carson does.

- Of his crossing ability, 80% of the time it is very good, the trouble is no one is ever gambling to stick it in the bleedin' net! Maybe when Chopra is fitter and sharper we might see some more of those crosses converted. Also, a tall striker able to win headers in the box would be very nice. Murphy himself could be this man but I quite like him on the wing, especially compared to Martin who would replace him if he was moved up front. That then brings about the 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 argument, but that's another story.

- Adds height and strength to the squad - can't think of anyone else at the club that can win a header in the final third (though after pre season I'm convinced JET will come back having been taught how to head the ball. The same happened with Wickham).

- Pops up with goals in the box. Three of his four goals last season were essentially rebounds that fell to him in the box and he converted. Nice finish at home to Barnsley as well. Important goals as well such as those against West Ham and Peterborough.

- Versatility. We can easily change formation with Murphy going up front, and I wouldn't bet against him popping up on the right hand side every now and then.

- He actually wants to play for us. He's settled in the area and clearly likes the club or he wouldn't keep coming back.

- Keeping that front four of JET, Chopra, Martin and Murphy together could be a very important factor. They played almost every minute of the second half of last season together and keeping it that way is only going to help them gell even more.

If he's willing to take a pay cut (he's gonna have to) then great. I'd be very happy to see us make this signing, as you can probably tell. I can see us doing it as well.

Brings balance to the team as well when we have someone like JET on the other side who a lot less likely to do the donkey work helping out the full back behind him.

Agree with Garv and at a good age he gives the team options and an aerial threat we up front currently dont have?
As long as a deal a can be done within our budget ...yes please.!

No thanks. Felt he didn't offer us enough last season. Too lumbering. I'd much rather see Carson given a run in the side. He's not the finished article but is much more exciting a prospect.
