Youngsters Back for Pre-Season
Youngsters Back for Pre-Season
Monday, 2nd Jul 2012 09:24

Town’s academy scholars are due at Playford Road for the start of pre-season training today. Midfielder Byron Lawrence, who made his first-team debut on the final day of 2011/12 at Doncaster, is amongst the new intake of first-year scholars joining the club full-time.

The youngsters will be put through their paces by returning academy director Bryan Klug and the rest of his staff as youth football goes into the new Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) era.

Russell Osman’s U18s play their first pre-season friendly at Kirkley and Pakefield on Saturday 14th July (KO midday) with their season proper is due to kick off on Saturday 18th August, the same day as the Championship campaign.

Paul Jewell’s senior squad are due back for the start of pre-season training on Thursday, although a number of players have already been at Playford Road.

Meanwhile, the club are advertising the job of head of academy recruitment through the Football Managers’ Association. Current academy recruitment manager Malcolm Moore is retiring this summer at the age of 65.

Byron is a big prospect.

After Spains fanrastic win last night, with 6 technically gifted midfielders playing together, there could be a new revolution in football coming our way. Its exciting to see the small Spanish playmakers passing and moving in that fashion.
Byron's reported style of play could fit with this philosophy, dont be surprised if other top clubs try to adopt this Barca/Spain style long term.
Note: Wenger has been trying to mould this type of player for a few years(Wilshire, Fabregas, Ramsey, Nasri etc). English players of this type are hard to find. If Byron does well, & I hope he does, I think many top clubs will be looking at him.

As the lads said above, work hard & try your absolute best day in day out. Not much more you can do!

Best of luck to all first years!

Is that the first time you've seen Spain play?! They & Barcelona have been playing that way for 5 years now!

ip3 i think wat Brian a mul is trying to say is the spanish way is the way forward. Its not tried in the english game so maybe its time to try it. 4-4-2 is long gone as was shown by us & England at the euros.

High hopes for Byron and the lads under Klug. There have been so many negative comments on here, about how our youth system no longer producing talent...lets hope some of these lads 'finally' breakthrough since way back in, ooh when was it now, 2010-11 season (Wickham & Rhodes). COYB!

@ Taylor 15! lol Iv been called many things in the past but never Del Bosque!

Thanks irishtim, you summed it up perfectly.
I hope Euro 2012 has highlighted that countries without these type of players/style will struggle to compete long term. Its not just england but also Ireland, Wales, Scotland, many other countries will experience this problem. Lets hope Byron is groomed in a manor thats suits his game, benefits Town and potentially his country in the future!
