Jewell: Keeper Signing Close
Jewell: Keeper Signing Close
Wednesday, 18th Jul 2012 00:28

Town boss Paul Jewell says the Blues are close to completing the signing of a keeper, but stopped short of naming him as Watford’s Scott Loach. Town are understood to have agreed a fee with the Hornets for the 24-year-old former England U21 international.

Jewell said: “The one we’re going for, we’re quite a long way down the line with that one. I don’t really comment on speculation but we’re hoping to tie the goalkeeping one up pretty soon.

“We’ve been chasing a goalkeeper for a while and we’re hoping it’s going to happen in the next few days.”

The Blues manager isn’t counting his chickens but is hopeful the deal will be done, although probably not in time for the keeper to join up with the squad before they return from Holland on Friday: “I don’t want to sound too confident as we’ve been down this route before, but we’re hopeful of getting the one that we want.”

Slovakian international keeper Marian Kello is currently on trial with the Blues and played the second half of the 1-1 draw with Helmond Sport.

Jewell was pleased with the 29-year-old’s performance, although he was largely untroubled: “The goalkeeper Kello didn’t have a lot to do in the second half but looked competent.

“We know him because he was at Hearts and he went to Aston Villa to train at the end of last season when he came out of contract at Hearts.

“He’s got a couple offers off a couple of clubs in Turkey, but he’s an experienced keeper and one we’re looking at.”

Meanwhile, Richard Wright is understood to be weighing up whether to hang up his gloves and take up a role coaching with the academy.

The 34-year-old recently left Preston after only a few days having been released by the Blues at the end of last season.

I wouldnt read too much into what Wikipedia says - its open for anyone to change information at anytime. Few examples from the past that I remember - Dos Santos signing for us after his loan deal, and Sol Campbell apparently signing too....both removed by the person who put them on there when they realised they were being a numpty.

The key with info on Wikipedia is to check the reference for the information. Any edit is supposed to be properly referenced to an article or reputable (public) source. If there's no reference, then it's most likely speculation/wishful thinking/deliberate vandalism by some loon who thinks it's funny to corrupt online encyclopedias. It's not "Football Rumours" guys! Fortunately there is also a vast host of editors who can correct such rubbish quite quickly.

stop moaning for once... there will always be people badmouthing players for leaving their clubs... half a people here were doing that when norris and mcauley were leaving, just to start missing them half a season later...

@itfcserbia - Nice video, I'm just a bit wary that in a 4:23 compilation, Kello never held the ball once and he always parried the ball away. Most of the parries went out for a corner, so unless we work on our corners and spot kicks, we could be conceding a few goals.

Get them both Loach is still young and can be coached to be a great keeper for many years to come for us and Kello gives us a really good expierienced back up for rotation for the upcoming long season

I doubt Marian Kello would sign for us to be backup, although perhaps he would be willing to fight it out for the first team with Loach. It seems he had to do similar at Hearts with Janos Balogh according to Wiki.

Hi all I've been watching Ipswich for 30 odd years and I have never felt so sorry for Jamie peters and ALB especially ALB I think he's a good keeper but needs confident not with gaffer needs a new keeper I'm not good enough on his mind and when I think of the days of Jon halworth that coundnt catch a cross for s€@t but was a good shot stopper I welcome the new keeper/keepers though as both top keepers and loach always played out of his skin against us

Kello was consitently very good up here- would be good signing. Seems puzzling though that him and Loach would both be willing to come?...if so must both be confident in their ability to be no.1. And that a move to us is seen as an attractive proposition.

Sindre94 - I will be absolutely delighted if we sign a GK. Whether Loach is the right man remains to be seen. Watford fans don't rate him and it's no secret that he is not PJ's first and possibly even second choice. Loach deserves a chance and like most fans I will happily give it to him, but I think we could have done a lot better e.g. Kello.

I still have not changed my opinion of PJ - IMO he has had 12 months to sort out the GK situation, after releasing two permanent keepers last Summer. I find it remarkable that it has taken so long. You don't need to agree with my opinion however. You may be happy with the lack of activity, the poor league position last season. That's great. But the purpose of this board is for 'comment'. I say when things are good (some results towards the end of last season, the signing of Chambers etc) ... but I simply won't 'pretend' to be happy with PJ's transfer policy last Summer - or this Summer to date. Results on the whole last year were very poor and we underachieved.

You are entitled to your opinion, which I respect, but would ask you to do likewise. It would seem a number of fans (particlularly those who have not renewed their tickets) do not share your constant positive spin. PJ has been in post 18 months and it's my opinion (whether you like it or not) that he has done a poor job. That said I have renewed my season ticket and will support the TEAM every Saturday, truely hoping that PJ has learnt from his many mistakes and proves me wrong.

@jas - "could have done a lot better e.g. Kello."?

No offence, but isn't that a clear example of negative spin, the opposite to what you accuse Sindre? Who is to say that we are not looking for another goalkeeper on top of Loach, e.g. Kello? If PJ starts the season with just Loach and ALB as our goalkeepers then I will declare him bonkers.

I have seen neither Loach or Kello play, but from the youtube video, and also from the reactions of Hearts fans in their main forum, Kello would be a great signing. To have him as no.1 and Loach competing with him as no.2 would be ideal.

@miiikkeyyyy - my thoughts exactly when i first saw this video, but believe me, i like Hearts and whenever i would catch them on TV i would take a look (SPL is broadcasted here in Serbia) and every time Kello would pull off something to remember... i really think he would be a great signing...

We should sign Kello or Loach, not both of them. Then get Richard Wright in to double up as a coach plus 2nd/3rd choice keeper
