No Bid for Davies But Another Deal Could Be Close
No Bid for Davies But Another Deal Could Be Close

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s not made a bid for Derby’s Steve Davies and hints that he may have decided to look elsewhere for a new frontman. The Town manager is hopeful that his fourth signing of the summer might be close, although wouldn’t confirm whether that player was a striker.

Jewell said: “No, [there’s been no bid made for Davies]. I spoke to Nigel Clough yesterday to tell him that at the end of the day we have other targets. There’s a lot been said. We’re hopeful of getting certainly one in pretty quickly.”

The Town boss wouldn’t be drawn on whether that player was definitely a striker but outlined where he is looking to strengthen: “We’re going to need a big centre forward, someone who is going to give us a bit of physicality up front, and then the same in the middle of the park.

“We’re at least two players light to just give us that bit of presence and that’s where we’re looking to strengthen.”

West Ham’s Sam Baldock, who we reported was on Jewell’s wish list back in May, is again being linked, although the former MK Dons man is a more diminutive frontman than the type of player the Blues boss says he is aiming to add to his squad.

Derby are believed to want a fee of £1 million for Davies, who Jewell brought to Pride Park from Tranmere when manager of the Rams. The Blues are understood to be unwilling to make an offer of that magnitude.

Davies has confirmed he'll be leaving Derby in the summer for family reasons with a switch to club in the south his preferred option.

We need a big striker not only for up front but also help out in defence with corners and free kicks.

What about Murphy from Celtic or is that dead in the water?

Just not Ameobi though please. Still agree with several other posters that we're short in certain areas (LM, CB, RB and up front). Don't really see the need for another Central Mid but if so it does sound like Hyam's days are numbered. An interesting week in store...

@tim - isn't Connor Wickham two words? Wickham and Baldock on loan would be real quality in this league!

as long as its not heskey!! were we not linked with Leicesters Paul Gallagher earlier in the summer?, a 6ft scottish midfielder that is a set piece specialist and can operate in a variety of attacking positions including out and out front man, support striker or can play from either flank....worth looking at? anyone heard any suggestion on whether any of the trialists will be given a contract? Kelio maybe a useful GK as competition for Loach In my opinion.

We were linked with Ricardo Fuller earlier in the summer - could possibly be him, although I think I read in the last few days that other clubs are after him too.

The problem with shooting down other peoples grammar is that your's needs to be spot on, a full stop after a question mark? Really?

Sam Baldock is 100% not the ALTERNATIVE physical option. Not at 5 ft 7.

Who ever the players may be, I'm sure PJ and the club will sign the right players for us.

Fuller is most likely target, where is Marlon Harewood playing these days? He had a short spell at Ipswich a few years ago.

Basnsez04: I agree. I hope its not Heskey. Couldn't hit a cows ar$e with a banjo!!

Like every other right minded proper fan, I am really starting to have a good feeling about the oncoming season. As has been said, numerous times before, RK ruined ITFC & gradually PJ is starting to put it right again. COYB!!

Davies is not worth 1M. His injury record is a concerm. However, if that's what Derby want they are entiitled to hold out. But if that's the case, we need to look elsewhere. We can't pay silly money - but equally need to be competitive.
