Jewell: A Rude Awakening Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11 Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.
Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.
“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.
“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.
“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...
“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”
The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.
“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.
“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”
Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.
“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.
“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.
“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.
“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.
“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

A massive reality check on the wonderful Paul Jewell 6-0, which will be said is one of these games, I love this club but will not stop moaning as some fans are calling it, facts hurt fans Jewell has to go I told you that I did not like the pairing Chambers and Smith, I tell you now Chopra will only get 30 goals in his dreams fact. This club is living on hype! the a lot of so called fans believe it, the season ticket holders have been mugged yet again. Paul Jewell not even a second class manager he is by far the worse we have ever had.

Paul Jewell isn't the worst, that was Keane, he done so much damage to this club, spent a fortune on rubbish n sold our future for peanuts whilst providing us fans with the most negative drivel on the pitch that i have seen in my lifetime. Paul is trying to play some nice stuff, we just need more depth and more options. To his credit he seems to have noticed this, just a little worrying that nothing is getting done. That to me shows a lack of ambition by the owner, his money, his call, just a little disheartening.

BossMan "Time to fall on your sword Jewell, and take Clegg with you" If you are seeking respect you'll usually find that balanced, reasoned views tend to be received much better than your style e.g look at Edmunds 5. For the drama queens (do you prefer that to idiot?) we have four points from three games against the top two teams and the fifth team....two of which were away. Notwithstanding a bright start we didn't do well today. PJ seems to know where we need strengthening...let's get behind him as he completes the rebuilding. I

chopra needs a partner up front ...i cant understand why its 1 up front and we still let in 6 how many more defence minded players do we have to play maybe play like barca with no strikers and we,d still lose.

I think Arsenal were the only team to go unbeaten for a whole season in England. That was about 10 years ago. Unfortunately we are not immortal, and we will lose a few game's from time to time this season. Thats a fact for all you 'realists' ,before you start calling for Jewells. Regarding some of the comment's about Evan's ambition and pumping millions again into the playing staff. I think some of you have short memories! In the last 3-4 years he's pumped almost 30 million into the playing staff without any reward. So i think he has a right to be a little more thoughtful this season, if he didnt show any ambition then i dont think he would of spent half that. It's quite easy to tell someone to spend their money when its not your own.

Bossman - your spot on. To loose 6-0 is a disgrace. As Alex Mathie said on radio suffolk "with the current crop of players we are no where near being a promotion challenging team". Too many on here make excuse after excuse, bottom line is we are simple not good enough. Must do better Mr Jewell, Mr Clegg and Mr Evans.

1 UP FRONT NEEDS SUPPORT FROM CENTRAL AS WELL AS WIDE POSITIONS. CHOPRA WAS NOT SUPPORTED FROM CENTRAL MIDFIELD ,RABBITS IN HEADLIGHTS. TOMMY SMITH CANNOT COPE WITH MOVEMENT AND BLACKPOOL HAD 4 OR 5 OPTIONS EVERY TIME THEY WERE IN OUR DEFENSIVE THIRD.

Mystified So Alex Mathie is an expert is he? He is generally pretty negative when summarising IT matches. Today he was even worse.

Another thrashing under the management of Paul Jewell, I was expecting a defeat today but not 6-0. Firstly as people point out we need a CB but what about a striker? Chopra is the only Town player to score one goal in three games, don't forget we lost Murphy and haven't replaced him. An injury to Chops or Smith/Chambers and we are toothless and defensless. But the problem goes further than players Jewell or even Clegg. The problem lies with Evans as he funds the club. Even if we sack Jewell and Clegg, Evans would only employ those of a similar standard. Evans will not find the funds for a decent manager, so what's the point of sacking Jewell. We will still only finish mid-table. IMHO its Evans where Ipswich's future lies. Does he invest more into the club, can he under the new fair play rules invest more in the club? In my view Evans should either start giving us funds so we can compete with the likes of Bristol City and Nottingham Forest, or if he cannot sell to someone who will. Yes, Evans saved us from going bust - we are all grateful for that. But times have moved on and teams have more money from rich owners orfrom parachute payments. If nothing changes at the heart of the club then its 15th position once again. Frankly the £500 S/T is not worth its value.

Well 6-0 is not the way we want to beaten for the first time this season, ok it is against Blackpool who will no doubt be there or there abouts, I can't help feeling that some of our boys heads drop once they get a few goals behind and interesting too how we didn't get drubbed at all second half of the season which makes me think it could be psychological - a little like a lowish handicap golfer who always starts the first nine umpteen over par only to then play better second nine to find out he's only 3/4 over his handicap (basically pressure being on at the start of the season to stay in contention). Additional players still need to be signed and hopefully no more loans, and too early to finger point at the manager or any particular player, let's see where we're at in a couple of months time.

i know you do get freak results occur but we seem to get more than out fair share, always against us though, this shows that we are probably not ready or good enough to compete at the moment although the first two results of the season may suggest otherwise, all in all I would much rather be where we are now than under Keane or even where we were at this stage last year, I'm glad we are playing younger players and particularly the homegrown lads. this is where Ipswich Town are at the moment, we are a mid table championship club and nothing more, lets play the youngsters and give them experience and let them bond as a team and we may benefit from it in 2-3 years time, lets not go down the route of loans and past their sell by date premier players, the youngsters will learn from results like today and it will only make them stronger and more determined for it not to happen again.

Yes, it is early days and we did do ok in the first two games, and Blackpool are a very good side, and we do have a lot of young players, but we have just lost 6-0. We have been humiliated again. A half decent team of professionals should never concede 6 goals. Players come and go but we still cannot sign a centre back who can mark at set pieces or who is not prone to silly errors, and as a team we still cannot deal with a quick counter attack. Also, despite loads of possession we do not look like scoring many goals. I think this is probably due to the system. Our central midfielders have to pass the ball sidewards or backwards because the lone front man, Chopra is tightly marked. If we are to get anywhere near the play-offs this season, Marcus Evans must allow PJ sufficient funds to buy some decent players (when players are cheap it is normally because nobody else wants them and they are not therefore very good). We urgently require another centre back (who is tall, can concentrate for 90 minutes and who likes tackling), a partner for Chopra and a physical presence in the centre of midfield (hopefully this is N'Daw.

I can see why some moan and don't understand why some are just eternal optimists, however I like to think I usually provide a balanced view. I'm not going to get all worked up over one huge defeat quite simply losing by that amount is not acceptable. Yes I do believe that Keane ruined this club but I have to say that by not providing enough transfer funds then Evans isn't helping at the moment, the problem there is that Ipswich may not have a huge amount of money but our owner does and some will expect to see him invest. I can't say I expect him to invest but if he wants us to compete at the top end of this division then he has to, this season whilst he still can. I personally believe he's playing a dangerous game by not allowing some more funds (I'm saying we should go mad and do a Portsmouth but we've gone from one extreme to another) to allow PJ to build a competitive squad. Oh well, here's to next Saturday, could be tough against Huddersfield but we have to bounce straight back.

Hopefully N'Daw will add in some more steel in the team. But we do need another centre-half as Tommy Smith just is not good enough. Actually we need another two centre-backs. I hate to be negative but PJ has had from the end of the transfer window last January to scout the lower leagues and Europe in order to rectify this. But the Championship is quite unpredictable and so we could very well win 4-0 next week and everything will be rosy again. Being positive Blackpool still have the benefit of parachute payments from their time in the Premier League and so can attract good players - something which is becoming increasing harder to teams such as Town.

Good post Buryblue77. There's no denying that today was a bad defeat, but taking 4 points in these very tough first 3 games was more than I expected and more than most teams will manage. The fixtures are about to get a bit easier so lets just wait and see before calling for the managers head.
CornardBlue added 20:19 - Aug 25
Same problem as previous seasons if you do not have a big strong centre forward who can hold ball up and bring others into play you have no chance in this league. When was the last time any of our strikers won a ball in the air, i think Alan Lee was the last one. We need new signings this week or it is going to be a long hard winter, also hope Huddersfield sell a certain striker before next week.

Unacceptable!! Why should the fans have to pay £25 each per ticket not including travel to watch that kind of utter garbage on a far too regular basis! Sort it out all Jewell.
suffolkpunchdrunk added 20:26 - Aug 25
Well that has put an end to the delusion that we could be hitting the top of the league with another win. PJ - Put the same team out against Carlisle and tell them to prove themselves and convince us doubters that this was a blip and not the start of a contagion of poor performances. Nothing but a convincing win there is acceptable.

Guys relax! OK we lost 6-0 but its not exactly the worst defeat ever recorded and it just means we missed out on either 1 or 3 points away to what looks like one of the best teams in the league. Zero points from a single hard game is ok. Goal difference is set back a bit but lets face it, it is insignificant when a single goal can be worth 2 points in another game (such as the previous one) so lets get behind the team for the next game because I am sure they will want to make amends.
