Jewell: A Rude Awakening Saturday, 25th Aug 2012 18:11 Blues boss Paul Jewell says his side’s 6-0 defeat at Blackpool was a rude awakening after their good start to the Championship season. The Town manager didn’t think anyone could have foreseen the eventual result during the first half.
Jewell said: “I don’t think that in the first 44 minutes you could see that coming. I thought we had as much of the ball as them. But we didn’t do an awful lot with it and we gifted them goals.
“The second goal came at a crucial time, right on half-time, and it meant it was going to be an uphill task in the second half. But once the third goal went in, we capitulated, I have to say.
“I think it’s a rude awakening,” he added. “I think the spirit in the squad is good, there’s no doubt about that, but that’s a test what happens out there.
“We played exceptionally well on Tuesday, battled away against Blackburn and in a week we’ve gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. That’s been our Achilles’ heel for a long time. On our day we’re good but when we’re not on our day...
“I wouldn’t say that it was one-way traffic in the first half today, we were definitely in the game but we didn’t do enough in their box and when it came in our box we just gave silly goals away.”
The Blues boss thought his side were particularly susceptible on the break: “They counter-attacked us all the time. It wasn’t as if they had bouts of pressure and were banging on the door and banging on the door.
“The sixth goal was a classic. We’re 5-0 down a we’ve got four players out the game with a minute to go. We lose it and they’re back at us.
“Counter-attacking’s hurt us badly today and when we’ve had the ball in situations, we haven’t done enough with it, and when the ball’s been turned over we’ve been exposed.”
Jewell had praise for the opposition: “They’re a good team. You can’t give teams like this goals like we did and expect to win matches.
“They’ve got a lot of flair players in their team, who work exceptionally hard and they’re a good team. But to lose 6-0 feels horrible.”
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway thought the result flattered his side: “This time of year you get the odd freak result, and I think that was one, to be perfectly blunt.
“I think to go in at half-time the reflection of the game was wrong. I didn’t think we deserved to have a two-goal lead. Our goalie made a brilliant save.
“I thought they got out too easy, I thought they passed it, they looked dangerous and it flattered us at half-time, to be perfectly honest.
“I went mad at half-time, I didn’t think we understood how to win the ball back, they had too much time on it. They caused my back four too many problems because the midfield didn’t get it right.
“In the second half I was delighted. I thought we were much better. And we needed to be. Goals change games, that’s what I keep talking about, and so far we’ve managed to get them a the right times, at vital times, in the early games.”

The running theme through these posts is that we 'need' a bunch of new signings. This is a view expounded by PJ himself. But no new signing comes with any guarantee. Surely PJ has learned during his time in the job that loan signings by themselves do not ensure that the team progresses but this now looks to be his only avenue if he harbours any real expectations of keeping his job. The chances of bringing in a permanent signing capable of making any significant difference appear remote now. Bad results like these are like car crashes at this level of football; hopefully rare and survivable. But for the hapless PJ they are becoming all too frequent and it would not be surprising if ultimately this latest 'accident' is deemed as one too many.

Blue041273 - Thats a good point, but I dont think its jewells fault regarding signings. Its up to Evansf Jewell has no cash to spend, then all he can look at is loans.

Aren't we supposed to have an ex-rower who is acting psychological coach with a remit to toughen up the team mentally? Now is clearly the opportunity to earn his keep. Young teams are notoriously inconsistent. If we can come back against Carlisle & Hudds. then this will at least be damage limitation. On the other hand, I can visualise winning the London Marathon until the cows come home, but it's still never going to happen. Everyone, including PJ (who's doing his best) knows we need more spine in the team. It's called reality.

Not really a rude awakening PJ - happened several times last season and Luton and Southend results suggested lots of this to come this one. More of the same unfortunately. Yes we can play some nice stuff on occasions but the squad is desperately thin in the same areas we've all known for several seasons, the coaching/management are failing to get any kind of continuity or improvement and the tactics and general managerial approach are negative. Add to that a dismal record in the transfer market and it really is all a bit depressing. I am assuming either ME is going to be off soon or PJ will be but I'd have preferred ME to get rid after last seasons woes and get a new Manager and CX in in time to make their mark in the off season.

Let's see how we respond on Tues and Sat............then sack him. Can't see us being like the wounded Liverpool of old, and giving the next opponents a good hiding, can you? Would love to see Harry here, but it's a bit of a commute from Bournemouth. Give it your best shot though, Evans.

Yes a bad day at the office but you shouldn't concede 6 goals. We need at least 3 defendersboth centre backs would be good as back up players Smith not comfortable on the ball and Chambers too short to deal with set pieces. Full backs still think Edwards is probably one of the few quality players who has it all, but he would be a greater asset right midfield. Cresswell started season where he finished last, poor. Can't pass a ball and dire from set pieces but still a decent buy for the money but won't ever get you promoted. Midfield looks better with Luongo as he has got quality and looks a player. Up front we can't survive in this division with just Chopra up front alone. Scotland has done well as an impact player but that sadly is all he is. We must sign another striker and give Chopra support. Positives for me is thjat we are playing the ball on the deck through the midfield and not hoofing. Hooping for a busy week of purchases.

3 different seasons, the 1 theme running through them is that we can't defend! Our 2 fullbacks were voted the our best 2 players last year, TS has played well in the world cup & olympics, Chambers has always been highly rated in the champ. Theyre not bad players. So it has to come down to tactics & training! Ive sais it before & im positive ill say it again JEWELL OUT!!!!!

I said after we lost 4-1 away to Millwall last season i'd give Jewell 10 games into this season and his sumer signings before i make a decision on whether he should stay or go. I'll honour that but currently our signings have not been good enough to plug the problems we had last season and that result yesterday was disgusting! We haven't solved the right back problem. I don't know why many of you looked at a 17 year old signing and thought we had! We've let all our experience in midfield go and not replaced them. Hyam, Drury and Luongo haven't played more than 60 Championship games between them! No new striker and no wide left midfielder and no strength in depth at central defence. Jewell has failed on this count, well, Clegg and Evans have failed. Results to date OK until yesterday. How on earth given that we had two defensive midfielder in that side are we getting caught on the counter attack like that!!!? There's a level of ineptitude somewhere and it looks like it's Jewell's. 5 days of transfer window and 7 games left to save your job for me Jewell....

I know its early days but this is getting embarassing, even going back to magiltons days with no money, we were not getting thrashed like this !!! its getting a regular thing now !! the past 3 or 4 seasons have been a disaster mainly, we seem to be going backwards, im sorry to say that the buck stops with the management and coaches. TIME FOR A CHANGE !!

Agree with the theme in Keaneish's post. Regardless of whether or squad is good enough to compete with the top 6 there is no way we should be being bent over and having 6 smashed up us. New gk, cb and dm all in the side and the outcome was terrible. I like the signings on paper but it's not enough. This may well be a freak result but when teams are doing this to us 4 or 5 times a season every year it is not a freak result it is a repetitive theme that we don't know how to stop a collapse and it is pissing me off. I feel bad for all those who made the effort to travel up yesterday have to say I toyed with a bank hol on the beach but glad I didn't bother.

How people on here can support this useless manager just read the posts and you would think he was something special I went yesterday and they were awfull the new signings poor Thomas the worst player to wear a town shirt we have been thrashed so many times since he has been here surely people can see how poor the coaching team and manager are JEWELL OUT before we are relegated

How can you idiots disagree with me about Jewell going you must enjoy watching YOUR team getting thrashed 4 or 5 times a season because I certainly dont he is without doubt the worst manager in our history if I am wrong please tell me why?

correct me if i'm wrong but did'nt we lose the 3rd game last season by six goals to peterborough 7-1 so nothing has changed then same old rubbish come on evans back jewell or sack him give him some cash to splash only 5 days to go

Is Chambers any better than Delaney? Is Loach any better than Lee Barrett? Smith is just not up to it We have no strikers as Chopra is vastly over rated. We have midfielders who are just about adequate. Maybe this is why we showed no improvement yesterday 12 months on from the 7-1 defeat at Peterborough.

bluey123... you have little credibility because you have no balanced views.did you have anything to say about the two previous results? And there were positives in both those games, which you chose to ignore, Jewell is the first manager to win at watford under floodlights , the team looks the fittest it has done for years and its a very youthful team playing some nice football with the ball on the floor, much better than the crap served up under Keane. Under Keane we went 14 matches without a win, you remember that? or do you have selective memory loss? Yesterday was poor, very poor but we have one draw one win and one loss, hardly the worst start in ipswich history, is i?. we are a working progress the team is short in many areas we all know that and Jewell needs some funds for rebuilding. Bluey123 you clearly are an expert and probably knew yesterdays result was coming, so why did you go to watch, as you call them a poor team? its not as though you celebrate a town victory is it? didnt get a peep out of you when we had a very good result against watford. Real fans enjoy victories.I am not sure its wise for you to refer to others as idiots. Definition of an" expert" an ex is a has been and a spert is a drip under pressure..... Everyone town fan is hurting after yesterday, around town today there is a loads of scum shirts, i was the only town shirt i saw, town till i die. I will enjoy every victory and suffer the losses too, its what genuine fans do. If we go on a keane type of losing run, i expect jewell to lose his job, however until that happens, all we can do is support the team. Being Negative and celebrating losses as you appear to do, doesnt help anyone....COYB

have given managers too much of a cozy time of it when things go wrong.. I'm not one to get on the coaches back, but it has been obvious for so long that two of our CB's are not up to it mentally.. getting very frustrating.. will be blunt, if we do not get a result of some substance against Carlisle, then Mr Evans must act.. and put in plan b and c : )

dissboyitfc and do you remember last xmas we were in a worst position in the league than when keane was at that stage, yet keane got sacked and jewell stayed, players have gone weather they were good enough or not is under debate, but not nearly enough has come in,jewell has had all pre season to sort this out,and i know its not all down to him,if ME or SC are not prepared to spend funds, then what hope have we got in the championship,i was at the home game against blackburn and for the 1st game of the championship i think the attendance was poor only 19,000 odd,the fans need to get to the games and support the club through thick and thin

im not panicking over the result it still is only 3 points against a team at very least will be in the play offs no lower. but i once again question evans not enough imput by todays standard of clubs if he brought it for a quick fix and buck it was never going to happen now he really does have to put up or get out and give someone who either really does love itfc or football to really turn our club other wise a lot of seasons of mediocre championship football or probably worse in seasons to come evans put up or shut up

Disboyitfc you clearly cannot read I said the worst manager and please please tell me the positives from Blackburn game ran around alot and a own goal and Thomas awful cant think of many positives and for Watford I went and Watford were terrible. As for playing yes I have played at a quite high I have coached and got a coaching badge HAVE YOU? As for Keane I was no fan of his or his approach to the game but we werent thrashed like saturday . As for the abuse you must of a very poor education as you to lower yourself to this type of reply you are the one who is a spirt whatever that means prat!!!!!!!!!!!!. I read in the above posts that some sensible people think Jewells had enough time to put things right. As for progress whats that then ?. A keane type loosing run thats a joke this manager has a worse record than any other manager who has been a the club for the same length of time or longer. JEWELL OUT
