Jewell: We Showed Character Saturday, 1st Sep 2012 18:23 Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side showed character to come from behind against Huddersfield but admits he is never confident that they are going to hold on to leads. The Terriers went in front in the first half via Adam Clayton then after the break Luke Chambers and Michael Chopra put the Blues ahead, James Vaughan later equalising for the visitors.
Jewell said: “I don’t think we’re ever all set at 2-1. I think the problem with us is that when we get to that winning situation we don’t seem to have that air of confidence that we can see the game out. That’s been the case for a while here.
“I think we showed good character coming back from a goal down. Huddersfield have got a really good hardworking unit. They’re used to winning, they’ve got a winning mentality.
“I looked at the stats and they’ve won 33 of the last 39 games that they’ve taken the lead in. That just shows that they’re used to winning, which is a credit to the management that’s gone before and the manager that’s here now, and the players.
“It’s never easy to come from a goal behind against anyone but certainly that’s the case against a team which expects to win when they go ahead.”
Overall, he was pleased with the performance: “I thought we mixed it up quite well, Daryl Murphy won all his headers. I thought on chances alone in the first half we at least deserved to go in level.
“Again, they’ve had one corner and scored from it, we’ve had plenty and haven’t. Murph’s had a good chance, balls have flashed across the box.
“I thought there were a lot of pleasing aspects to our game. Obviously, defensively we know we’ve got to improve, not just at the back but our defensive-mindedness when we’re attacking.
“I think you can sum up Ipswich by a 10-second passage in the game. We hit the inside of the post then 10 seconds later we got a penalty - that can’t be right.
“If we don’t score the goal and it comes out of the box, we’ve got to make sure that we’re not that easy to play against. That just sums us up.”
Jewell was pleased with Paul Taylor’s debut: “I think he’s going to be good for us. He’s a bundle of energy. He was absolutely out on his feet out there. It’s been a big week for him, it’s a big move for him but we think we’ve got a really good player.
“We think he can play in a number of positions, he’s bright and we’re pleased with him. I thought both him and Daryl Murphy both did very well today.”
The Blues boss was pleased to get a more positive result after the two losses: “I think what the important thing is that we’ve lost two games in a week, one heavily, one against a team in the division below us, and in the manner we did in extra-time.
“The question marks were there before the game and at half-time. I thought we showed plenty of guts, plenty of decent football as well.
“I thought it was a decent game for both sides, honest, trying to win the game. It was end to end, probably too open for mine and Simon’s liking but I thought it was important to get something out of the game.
“Obviously at 2-2 when they got the penalty, we were staring down a barrel and the keeper’s made a fantastic save.”
Huddersfield manager Simon Grayson agreed with his one-time manager at Bradford: “It was an open game, plenty of chances for both teams. We could have won it, we could have lost it, obviously there was the opportunity to win it at the end with the penalty.
“But, coming here, I would have settled for a draw at the start of the game. We had some good opportunities, but so did they.
“Probably about a fair result, entertaining game, both me and Paul were trying to win the game right from the start to the finish and to end 2-2 both managers will be both satisfied to get a point because we both could have won it, we both could have lost it.”

our defence is shocking, and its all down to paul jewell,he should have concentrated on the defence before transfer market closed instead of other area's,and to all you jewell die hard fans out there if you still think he's the right man to manage this club then your more deluded than i thought you were, and you can give me as many negative as you like about this post, cause there are at least 15,000 fans out there that agree with me as you are only a minority, and as for the attendance another p1ss poor showing JEWELL OUT

2-2 against an average team without the guy who's goals singlehandedly got them promoted isn't really good enough for a club of our stature. Got to question Paul in not shuffling the pack until too late to do anything.

@ipswich61 - Respect that you're a lifelong fan etc. But to point out our defensive frailties is to state the obvious at the moment. PJ realises what need's doing, and you're right, it need's doing urgently and maybe should have been sorted this window. But we need to have faith in the manager that he'll stick yo his word and bring in the right players (CBs) from the PL, as he has been saying he will do. It's very easy to point out the problems with the team but it takes a more specialised eye to recognise the positives in today's performance: Taylor - superb. Chopra - did well. Luongo - again impressive. Going forward we looked dangerous and could have won it. We'll have Edwards back soon at RB to aid the rebuilding of our defence. Give credit where credit's due, I think there's too much stuff on here pointing out the negatives, which is very easy to do. Not everything is Jewell's fault.

@bennyitfc,i agree with some of the things you say,but honestly i dont think jewell is the right man here, ive seen some great players come and go at this club,i used to enjoy going PR in the early 70's,80,s,i used to remember the great atmosphere at PR.we dont have that now and the last 2 or 3 years has got to be one of the worst in the clubs history, fans are just not turning up to the games anymore, like today only half full, ive supported town through thick and thin and will continue to do so,but honestly i would like to see jewell go, ive never rated him

Massive improvement on last weeks result. Taylor and Murphy helped to create good attacking play...... Defensively diabolical though, I think we will soon have a couple of defenders in on loan, Jewell would have been crazy to let Delaney go if he did not have something concrete in the pipeline and I don't think he's crazy, probably, so I look forwards to developments. Today's game was very entertaining though and we could easily have won.

We'll probably be bringing in 1 or 2 CB's which will be beneficial in long run but the team, with several new faces, will take time to gell so we could end up (again) playing catch up (although the 2 weeks break could be a blessing in that respect).

ipswich61....perhaps the crowd size has something to do with the economic climate, and you say you would like bigger crowds, do you really think that people are encouraged to go back to PR after reading some of the negative posts on here? Its not all rosy at PR and no one is thinking otherwise but its not all doom and Gloom either. Perhaps commenting on the positive side , might inspire some to come back and give pr a visit......coyb

Benny and Leroy - agree. As I saw it: 1. Positives: Taylor, luongo, Martin (first half), loach (second half) 2. Negatives: Ainsley, smith, drury (not sure why no one else has mentioned how bad he was) 3. Linesman was prostrate on the floor when he awarded their pen - outrageous! 4. Chops had an iron clad pen turned down 5. Overall: yes, defensively very very shakey and we look like a very small side but much better passing with some really creative play that was way ahead of anything that Huddersfield came up with. To my mind, we were the better footballing side and also looked fitter than them BUT must have the three players above in 2 replaced in the coming weeks do that they only play on the fringes on the squad.

Its these games we should breeze if we're going anywhere this term. Jewell has started a complete ground up rebuild of the club and evans and clegg are in on the act. Leaner tore the heart from the club and wasted Evans money. Jewell tried to keep the fans happy with the likes of chops and Bullard. Now we're left having to consider our mistakes. The majority of the big earners bar choral have been terminated as has the dead wood. Klug has been brought in and transfer and wage structure must now be tiny showing that Evans is running this club with a business head on. He tries the approach where we spend all out but it didn't work and itfc has to become profitable. We sadly all need a reality check now. Championship may be home for a few seasons yet but give us time to grow and I have faith we will be back in the big time. Onwards and upwards

ive never really wanted Jewell out because id like a bit of stability at the club but all ive heard for 18 months is "we need to sort the defence out" if i knew what the main problem in my job was for 18 months and failed to deal with it id get sacked, simple as. Also the other one is "we need 2 or 3 players". said players then arrive we are still poor and then we hear it again "we need 2 or 3 players".its like a never ending merry go round of excuses.my kids cry every time i walk out the door to go to the game cus they want to spend their saturday with their Dad.im beginning to wonder if i shud just pack it in now and enjoy my family instead.same old same old every game

Those slating smith clearly don't realise what he does for the team. If you were actually at the game you would have seen that he got chambers out of the s*** a number of times, covering when he made errors. This sort of thing goes unnoticed but is vitally important. Yes smith makes the odd mistake, but when he does there is no one covering him which makes it look worse than it actually is. In my opinion, he was the better of the two centre halves today. I really do wonder if some people have watched the same game as I have....

Why are we shocked at the defensive frailty - anyone remember Jewell's relegated Derby side ? Did he skip putting that bit on his CV? Our problem is that we have an owner and chief exec who know nothing about football..under these clowns we will always be a mid-table Championship side. I feel sorry for the younger supporters like my son. At his age I was watching us conquer Europe and challenge for the title....and now we have this...while Norwich take a point away at Spurs..what would the score have been if we were playing away at Spurs, Mr Evans?

bluebell32 have a look at Smith week in week out. He constantly gets pulled out of position, does not read the game well and lacks pace. He is not good enough. Still early days for Chambers. It is obvious to all that the pairing is guaranteed to leak goals. We are lacking leadership. The statement applies to all facets of the club from the charirman, chief exec, manager and on the field. See Boyd again has been linked this am but can't believe that our nex two 'deals' won't be defensive related or are those in charge really that stupid?

Second half was pretty entertaining yesterday and it could have gone either way in the last 10 minutes. For me there were more positives than negatives. Taylor will be great, Chops scored, We showed some fight and the penalty save will really improve Loach's confidence after picking the ball out of the net so many times at Blackpool. Huddersfield are a decent side an have momentum from last year so considering there were two new additions in the side and what happened last week it's not a bad result. Smith and Drury - sorry but I don't think are championship quality. I would not start Drury would rather shuffle around to fit Hyam in and would really like to see Chambers paired up with someone new. Smith seems to be left standing every set piece in the first half and he just doesn't look up to it to me.

Agree with Bluebell32 Smith is certainly no worse than Chambers and is a better header of the ball. IMHO both should only be regarded as back up players as not good enough.

tractorbeezer....thanks for posting video of the Loach "SAVE"..... The negative posters are playing their part in keeping the club down trodden. Surely any true fan would salute that as a Cooperesque penalty save , absolute quality save . We all know the Towns pitfalls and like everyone i am at a loss to explain why it has still not been sorted out. Hopefully some good news will arrive this week. Until then lets enjoy "THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY". People who criticize only and have nothing good to say, just create negativity that serves no good for the team we love..... COYB

Righty, thank you for your perceptive comments about me being an IDIOT because I was actually ENTERTAINED yesterday, and at Watford. That is the most important thing about football, particularly when you have other priorities in life. I would love to see us win every week but we won't. Perhaps, once you have got your stuff ready for school tomorrow, you could get a life!

If Smith is clearly 'not up to this level' - then why was he probably one of our best players between January and April last season. Personally the guy needs to be rested and maybe give N'Daw a game against Boro.
will444 added 13:53 - Sep 2
Dissapointed not to take all 3 points, especially against a team I think will be struggling at the end of the season. There were some positives and negatives to take from it, think smith definitly needs a rest, creswell needs to up his form. Think taylor will be exelent for us, also thought jack ainsey played well considering it only his 3rd first team game for ipswich, hes been at the club since he was 8, fully deserves this chance.
