Stoke Will Send Fringe Players Out on Loan
Friday, 7th Sep 2012 09:15

Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes has confirmed that his club will make some of their fringe players available for loan. Football League clubs are able to take players on 93-day 'emergency' loans from tomorrow with Potters’ centre-half Matthew Upson amongst Paul Jewell’s top targets.

Scholes said: “The fact we have made seven signings speaks for itself. The backing that the Coates family has again given the club is incredible.

“Now we have to balance things and move some players out as well. It’s fair to say we have ended up with more in the squad than is appropriate.”

Upson, 33, has been included Stoke’s 25-man squad but looks a little way off the first team at the Britannia Stadium and so still may be available for loan.

Fellow defender Danny Higginbotham, also 33, a Blues target in January, has not been included in the 25.

Let's just get them both and we'll have the depth in defence we need. So tired of all the speculation.

IMO - Would be a good signing, hopefully Smith will benefit from playing alongside him.
Upson could have a positive influence with his experience and organisation a bit like Mowbray all those years ago.
If Chambers can play RB then I would move Edwards into midfield as he is still prone to making mistakes with his postional play.

I'd hardly class Upson as a fringe player,as I've said before Stoke see him as 3rd choice centre back. Not gonna happen. If anyone it will be Higginbotham.

As Premier League players they will be on a good wage and if Stoke want 100% of his wages covered then I'm not sure if its going to happen.

If we employed a few scouts to cover Europe then we could pick up players who would be able to play in the Championship but with cheaper wages. And we wouldn't have to wait on the PL to name their 25 man squads

Not sure if its just me but i cant understand why we would loan 30+ defenders even if it is on loan. Thought we were building for the future? id rather we signed 22-28 year olds with view to permanent. we've all seen whats happened when we have someone whos passed it, i.e ingimarsson!

At present we need somebody at the back with experience to instruct our Kamikaze defence how to clear the ball, Huddersfield's first goal was a case in point three attempts to clear the ball straight down the middle to an opponent.
Get Big Al back to show them how to clear the ball to the stands, then reorganise, instead of panicking and playing it into danger

Makes me wonder why we couldn't snap up Danny Collins from them, Danny Higginbotham as a left sided centre back could work, he's a bit of a hardman with a rocket of a free kick aswell.Possibly even Ryan Shotton, has a bit of pace but not sure if he would adapt too the left side of defence, both decent players for Championship level.
