Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge
Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.

“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.

“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”

The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.

"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”

Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.

“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.

“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.

“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.

“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”

Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.

“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.

“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.

“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

Be worried be very worried, for this Town team in it's present form will go down that is a fact, the reason no defence and nothing up front
This is team Jewell built it only has only 5 players at best who can play at the Championship level, we have two home games now and need four points from them. I want Jewell out as soon as possible

So, we don't only have defensive problems now but we have scoring problems too. It didn't sound like we deserved the loss today according to the radio. That guy commentating with Brenner, should be the Ipswich manager. He knew what he was talking about all the time.

I'll be their as usual on Wednesday and Saturday cheering us on. Losing a little patience now though, and i give Jewell until after the Brighton game at LEAST where he could walk if results haven't improved.

COYB, 3 points Wednesday!

Lmao bla bla bla same old same old

He is a manager who has had his time, I'm afraid the level required in football management has caught him up and past him by.

I think we have a decent team so why do we keep loosing?

everybody knows these problems, but he doesn't know how to deal with these problems which is why week in week out he says the same things in every interview. I would have liked to keep Jewell and see if he could do better but we do not have the time to wait and hope, i am very worries about this season

With Chopra, Taylor, Murphy, Emmanuel-Thomas, Martin etc. we should have loads of cutting edge!

It's early days, but we're in the bottom three and with our inability to defend this is worrying. We must make the most of our two home games, as otherwise it could be panic stations given how tight the finances are at Portman Road, which is limiting the ability to bring in the better players we need.

Looking deeper why should we keep paying £25-30 for a ticket when you're not that bothered that we're constantly losing games? Why does it not matter at this stage of the season that we're losing any less than in 20 games time? Get out.

Things aren't great right now but it's a bit premature to start saying we're certain for relegation. That can't be said for any team this early into the season. I know we've all had to endure dross for three or four years now but as fans we need to be backing the team.

COYBs!

Same old hymn sheet Jewell, what do you expect if you don't get the basics right, bottom three now not looking good, my patience is now wearing very thin and you still continue with the same old formation!

btw, good to see Rhodes get a brace today, he will be playing in the Premier League whilst we are in Div One next season!

Nothing but excuse after excuse he had all summer to put a team capable of competing this year, he chose the players so there should be no excuses. Get jewell out now before the seasons over by xmas!!

Its not that you are losing patience 666, you are just frustrated like PJ and the rest of us. We have some good players, they proved that today. Back to the training ground and fingers crossed for the next one.

Very very disappointing i was´nt there so cant comment on the game to much, but after the international break and transfer window like most hoped for a little more solid defence with one or two new faces. Alas no new faces and another defeat, still a long way to go but we need to improve and fast.

we shouldn't be going into matches with fingers crossed! we should go into matches with confidence in our team and confidence in the manager which we don't have! us fans need a boost and that boost would be a new manager coming in with exciting ideas about moving this club forward because spending season after season aiming for mid table or surviving relegation is pathetic

Groundhog day. Doing the same thing expecting different results just gonna make Paul look lost. Must make changes putting players in a system that is balanced, get the players in that can ply the system we play or do his self a favor and fall on his sword.

The problem is with the Championship apart from Peterborough and Millwall, all the other teams seem to be picking up points, early days I know but with out inability to score and defensive frailties I dont know how we're going to win games. I always want to be balanced with my views but I've lost or am starting to lose patience with PJ, we need a fresh manager who has a good understanding of the way football has evolved or someone who will stablalise us, Karl Robinson, Mick McCarthy or even Steve Coterill he has some fire in his belly, i want to be optomistic so early on in the season but it's difficult, I dont think half the players care if we win or lose and Middlesbrough's a hell of a way to travel for fans, PJ's inept and he's been making me and other fans look silly when we've come on here and try and stand up for him.
