Jewell: We Can Turn Things Around
Thursday, 20th Sep 2012 01:54

Blues boss Paul Jewell has insisted that his Town side are capable of turning their season around despite a disappointing start which sees them sitting in 23rd in the Championship after six games. The Blues have failed to score in their last two matches — both 2-0 defeats — despite creating plenty of opportunities in front of goal.

Jewell said: “I think we can turn it around. We’ve just got to take the chances. You guys [the media] have sat up here with numerous managers and they’ll have said the same thing - ‘goals change games’ - and if we get the first goal then you’ll see a different side to us.

“It’s not as if we’re not creating chances, we’re creating really good opportunities but we’ve got to be more ruthless in each box.”

The Blues boss is likely to be without recent signing Paul Taylor when Charlton visit Portman Road on Saturday, the former Peterborough man having left Portman Road on crutches after last night’s match due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half, while fellow frontman Michael Chopra could also be a doubt.

The 28-year-old tweeted: “Let's hope my thigh is better for the weekend, lots of rest and ice. Gutted about tonight, we need to start taking our chances.”

Wolves boss StÃ¥le Solbakken was pleased to notch his first away win as the manager of the Midlanders but admitted it was a close game: “It was hard work. It could have gone either way.

"I think in the first half both teams were very well organised and there were few chances and it was difficult for either team to open the other one up.

“In the second half there were a lot of chances for both teams. I think we struggled with the long ball into our penalty area, we defended too deep and even if we won the first ball, the second one could always cause us problems.

“But we also had some great chances; Kevin Doyle hit the inside of the post and Bjorn Sigurdarson should have scored at 0-0, so it could have gone either way.”

The Norwegian had sympathy with Tommy Smith for his own goal: “He was unlucky there. I didn’t really see what happened, but we haven’t had much luck so far this season, so maybe it was our turn today.”

Solbakken says his first six games as a manager in English football have shown him just how close the Championship is: “What I’ve seen so far is that there isn’t a great difference between the teams.

“I think that Ipswich are in a difficult situation when you look at the statistics so far, but they could have had points today and I saw their game with Middlesbrough and they were very unlucky and they drew at home with Blackburn, so I think that shows how even this league is.”

I don't think a win on Saturday should keep jewell in the job he's had to long to sort out the problems I mean looking for the right player to bring in as defensive cover is there nobody out there better then what we got as for not getting players in I think clegg and Evans wanted to give jewell so much time to see what he can do and give the new manager the transfer kitty
Why give jewell 3/4 million to spend if they won't keep him.
As for his post match comments now well they are coming a joke
Thought jewell could do a job but what did he do at derby?
We may look good on paper with possession and all that crap but that don't win games now im afraid mr jewell so do the best thing and walk as you know your not getting a new contract.
Although mr Harry redknapp would be a dream and Matty holland being a good idea my choice would be paolo di canio good football had a promotion passionate and not afraid to tell players when they are under performing I'm sure swindons goalkeeper will tell us that.

I've lost patience, but I would give jewell two more games (or the end of the month) to turn it around, otherwise we can (once) again kiss good bye to promotion this season if we leave it any later!

you created the team PJ, you presumably know the character of the players you bring in , if they havnt got whats needed , why sign them . WHY are we two years down the line and you still havnt assembled a settled team of players that can improve the clubs fortunes , WHY are we still heading wrong direction . Could it be because YOU have no direction ?.I for one am praying our next big signing will be a decent manager .

I am sorry but PJ has had long enough, we need to get our team back.
PJ has spent a few quid and had the time to have the team playing football.
I love Tommy Smith but that own goal was a joke, and we are back to being a laughing stock.
Thanks for your time PJ but you are no better than Roy Keane.

There are so many anti Jewell postings but I think that we supporters should look at the current state of the game and the bigger picture? Last nights match with Wolves consisted of 2 average teams both short on confidence setting out their stall so as not to lose. We created far more chances but failed to take any of them, had 3 gone in then the reaction would probably have been different? Wolves had one good effort rattle the post, got lucky with their first goal and scored their second out of nothing after we gifted them possession. On another day we may well have scored 3 or 4 goals despite a non too convincing performance. It looks as though there is no outstanding team in the division and promotion or relegation will ultimately be decided on luck and injuries? With regard to Jewell, I am sure that he is doing his best and I don't think he is that bad a manager, I think he lacks the ability to get average players to play above themselves as John Lyall was able to do, but how many of this type of man manager is around now or even available? Mr Jewell's problem is that he is now having to manage with financial restrictions imposed upon him and potentially available players who are not yet living in the real world and think that they can still demand crazy salaries that have been the norm up until now! How many players are there out of contract at the start of this season and still find themselves without a club? Many more than previous seasons I would bet? Until the players and their agents wake up to reality then the situation will not improve. I think our beloved club are suffering this situation more than most because the owner is not a football man and is running his club as he would his business and does not have an ego that allows him to make a mockery of his day to day financial ethos. Mr Jewell may or may not be the man to take us forward? But in the current climate, I wonder who is?

wel if you look at the game chops hit the post and there were some good chances it wont be long before they are converted to goals keep the faith this is just when your tema needs your support right at the low point it will turn around that I am convinced of sacking the manger is not the answer we will turn the corner 4 games and we will be back in the fight the points between 1st and last isnt such a great difference right now if after the next four games we are not doing it then i think yes a change of stratigy is required i dont want to see pj go thats for sure he is a decent manager and if you beleive his not good enough or his will isnt strong on both accounts i think you would be wrong 4 games and lets see what happens give the boys our support dont run out on them now we are ITFC till we die and that is part and parcel fo supporting your team rmember the allamo!!!! some Dunkirk spirit is needed now ...COYB!!!!

Why did we have all that fuss over which song to play after we score a goal - as we never get to hear it anyway.

Perhaps we should concentrate more on the music we play when the players take the field. Those with long memories may recall the circus music which was played in the 70's and early 80's - that music is quite apt considering the current fiasco going on.

There's a circus in the Town, in the Town
Paul Jewell is a Clown is a Clown...

In an ideal world i'd have Burley or Magilton back here (or both) but that would split too many idiot fans.

The sensible choice would be Billy Davies..did a fantastic job at Preston,Derby & Forest, wouldn't have to buy him out of a contract and he's capable of working with what we've got rather than the constant 15 players in/out every transfer window.

He would be my choice (sorry PJ).

It doesn't matter who we'd getin as a manager, the problem of Simon Clegg needs to be fixed first- Evans owns a football club, his chief executive needs to know football better than anyone, sort that out, THEN bring in a new manager. I doubt Sir Alex could do very much with our team with Clegg as Evan's puppet.

Been hearing these excuses under Magilton, then Keane and now Jewell. Maybe it's higher up than the manager things need to change...
