Blues boss Paul Jewell was pleased with a point after drawing 1-1 away at Brighton but admitted to being disappointed that his side couldn’t hold on after going ahead in the first half through Daryl Murphy.

Jewell said: “Obviously you’re disappointed when you’re winning 1-0, but they’re a good team, Brighton, like most teams in this league.

“They have a way of playing which is very difficult to stop and I thought we stopped that for long periods and frustrated them.

“We kept our shape really well and counter-attacked excellently in the first half especially and we should have been 2-0 up. We had a wonderful opportunity at the start of the second half, their keeper made a great save from Daryl Murphy.

“They scored the goal, they had a lot of pressure, which they will have here, but I thought we stood up to the task well.”

The Blues boss says his team’s defending has improved in the last couple of matches: “We’ve conceded goals from set plays and stuff this season and we’ve taken a lot of flak and we can’t hide away from that, but I think the lads have shown in the last two games that the spirit is there, we just need to get that victory and I’m sure we’ll be on our way.”

Jewell was pleased to see Daryl Murphy net his first goal since he returned for his third loan spell but thought he could have netted at least one more.

He also had praise for his captain, the creator of Murphy’s goal: “Daryl scored a great goal and could have had a couple more.

“I thought Carlos Edwards was outstanding. For someone allegedly of 34, he looks like an 18-year-old. I thought he was brilliant tonight, Carlos.

“I thought the rest of the team dug in there and at times when we had to show greater aptitude and determination.”

The Town manager was happier with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s display: “I thought tonight he put in a good shift.”

Guirane N’Daw was one of Town’s stand-out performers with the Senegalese international settling into the side.

Jewell said: “It’s difficult. In the middle of the park, it’s a battle at the moment, but I thought we looked a bit more compact tonight and on the break at times we made really good opportunities at a difficult place to come.”

The Blues boss said Michael Chopra was replaced in the second half as he was tired: “Playing up front on your own is a difficult task and he hasn’t trained fully, he’s had two training sessions since we played Charlton. He was never going to play the 90 minutes.”

Jewell added that midfielder Luke Hyam is a concern for Saturday’s home game against Cardiff City: “I think Luke is a doubt for the weekend. He got a knee in his back on Saturday and they can take a while to settle down.”

I will as always stick in their and support the players but we need a win sooner than later, as I hate looking at the table. Let's hope JET can keep these performances consistent now. Against another team that is top of the league next...but who knows in this league. COYB

How on earth can we expect to win games when we only seem able to score a maximum of 1 goal a game because the manager is so tactically inept...........

If you'd bought a genuine right back you'd be able to play him in his correct position and he might be able to put more crosses in like that.

GiveusanI added 23:12 - Oct 2 Really thought we were going to hang on for the win tonight having weathered the worst of the Brighton pressure. Seemed a bit of a soft goal to concede. Overall though some signs for encouragement. Plenty of desire from the players on display. Martin and Edwards didn't stop running for the 90 mins. Need more composure in central midfield. And Chora up front alone wasn't working tonight. Good vocal support from the travelling fans. COYB!

Tractastic added 23:15 - Oct 2 Good result in the circumstances but again papers over the cracks. I don't know the answer to success for this club but it isn't Jewell. I still feel on paper we have a team capable of challenging for a play off place if managed correctly. COYB.

MickMillsTash added 23:23 - Oct 2 We p;layed well, the side looked as if it had some belief - NDAW , Higginbottom and Chambers were excellent,- made the game look easy- great positioning, Edwards superb, Jet gave us some trickery but Murphy was MOM. After the shambles of Saturday something to give us optimism. I have seen 3 games this year and not been impressed by anyone- the starting 11 tonight could get top 6 if Chopra has some chances made for him.

Edmunds5 added 23:50 - Oct 2 I think we have reason for optomism after tonight, ok we couldn't hold on once again but there will be many sides who will get beaten at Brighton this season I can assure you of that. Higginbotham looks to have helped our defence hugely which can work as a platform. Good to see Murphy score and I think if he JET, Chops and Martin can get their shooting boots on I feel confident we can go on a decent run, but obviously the front lads need the service to do that. Without being negative I think it would of been the perfect time to play a lower side than Cardiff who are flying, then again saying that we got beaten by Charlton and it is the Championship so I suppose anyone can beat anyone.

brendenward35 added 06:55 - Oct 3 I'm sure people just log on here to moan and moan and moan, loads of fans of teams in this league would be more than happy taking a point at Brighton. Like you all say the table doesn't lie they were top and we were 2nd from bottom so a draw is really a fantastic result and the players and manager deserve some credit. This result will give them confidence just like the Barnsley result something to build on. I'm also sure someone slated Murphy yesterday and hey presto his man of the match last night. Loads of you slated Higginbotham's arrival but looks like his playing out of his skin and settling the defence. Even our legend Mick Mill complimented the team last night thats coming from someone who really knows the game. Come on guys look at the positives and support your team COYB'S
