Leicester's Wellens Signs On Loan
Thursday, 4th Oct 2012 17:37

Leicester midfielder Richie Wellens has joined the Blues on a month's loan, the Blues have confirmed. The 32-year-old has been out of favour with the Foxes this season and is likely to go straight into the squad for Saturday's home live Sky game against Cardiff City.

Wellens told the club site that he was immediately attracted to the prospect of moving to Portman Road when the chance came: "I've been looking to go out on loan and when the opportunity arose to come to Ipswich, I didn't have to think twice.

"Leicester wanted me to go out on loan and when they showed me the list of clubs that I could go to, Ipswich stood out.

"I need to start playing games again after my injury and this is a great opportunity to do that. It's a nice club and I've always enjoyed playing at Portman Road.

"We're down at the bottom of the league at the minute but there are some good players here in the squad so I'm sure the position will soon change."

Central midfielder Wellens started his career with hometown club Manchester United making one League Cup sub appearance before moving on to Blackpool where he played between 2000 and 2005, making 193 starts and 23 sub appearances for the Seasiders.

The 5ft 9in midfielder split the next four years between Oldham and Doncaster before joining Leicester for £1 million in July 2009.

He has made 139 starts and six substitute appearances for the Foxes but has not featured this season. After missing the end of last season and pre-season ahead of 2012/13 with a knee injury, Wellens, who is with Town until November 10th, came close to joining Sheffield United on loan.

Earlier this afternoon, Southend's Bilel Mohsni revealed that he is set to sign a three-month loan with the Blues tomorrow, while Town are believed to have renewed their interest in QPR striker DJ Campbell.

Elsewhere, free agent Nigel Reo-Coker is said to be interesting the Blues but with Wellens having signed the 28-year-old - who was understood to have spoken to Town in the summer of 2011 - would appear an unlikely addition.

I am willing to give this guy a chance but am concerned as to why we havent made any loan signings for players who are young with option for permanent. I struggle to see how a 32 year old midfielder will improve our team when surely the most important is the defence.

I don't get the thinking behind this really.

go on a bad run = dont get anyone in
get a good result at brighton = make some changes in an area we look okay in

Seem a little bit odd to me, but what do I know :-|

Just got it - we're going Spanish with five in midfield. Not only that but to keep the momentum up we can now play a different style with different midfield players in each half! Cracking solution and as most are on loan they're cheap thus keeping the 'bean counter' happy as well. Just the fans to satisfy now then!!!!!

can't see the point of this . a goalscorer is the main need at the moment . this is not one for the future , so who drops out to make way for him ?

Is the manager panicking or is this his last throw of the dice

Another central midfielder? I thought that's the last area of the pitch we'd look to add to with N'Daw, Hyam, Luongo and Drury, plus Martin and Emmanuel-Thomas both wanting to play in the middle too.

Still, let's give Wellens a chance and see what he adds.

Might be an important addition to the side. Drury definitely not convincing in central midfield on Tuesday.

half decent in his day but thats past him now, might be ok in the short term but not the answer to our problems and will potentially keep the likes of Hyam(i know he injured this week) out of the team, not the way forward. go now jewell and do us all a favour, enough is enough you are ruining our football club

Wellens is a decent player, a good passing midfielder, will do well alongside n'daw I think.

all smacks of desperation to me, and the only players available are the ageing ones.

"Building for the future....aiming to sign players with a view to permanent deals in January"

...yer right !

Love this signing, compared to what we currently have a big upgrade....Hyam out injured, Drury this level looks a little beyond him, Luongo is young don't want to wear him out completely

Like casanovacrow,i cannot quite grasp the reason for this.

Well run clubs do most of their business early in the transfer window. So what does that make us?

Good player, shame it's only a month! Adds a bit of steel we've lacked and he's quite creative at the same time.

these older players coming in will help our very young squad become better in the future and give them organisation on the pitch
