Wellens: Town in False Position Friday, 12th Oct 2012 14:13 New loanee Richie Wellens says Town are too big a club to be in a “false position” near the bottom of the Championship. The 32-year-old midfielder joined the Blues on a month’s loan last week and made his debut in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City.
Wellens, who had been out of action since suffering cruciate ligament damage at the end of last season, says he was offered the chance to drop a division as he continued his recovery but preferred a switch to a Championship side. However, his parent club put limitations on where he could go.
“Two or three weeks ago, Sheffield United wanted to take me on loan. I wasn’t quite ready to go and play football at that time,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk.
“Leicester preferred me to go to a League One club and I’d said I’d only go to Sheffield United. But by the time I’d said that their midfielder had come back from suspension, so that was off.
“And then Leicester said I could go to the bottom four clubs in the Championship, they obviously didn’t want to send me to a rival in the Championship.
“So, I looked at the bottom four clubs and Ipswich is a club in a false position, too big a club to be at the bottom of this league, so I’m looking forward to climbing the table in the next few weeks.”
He says he needed to be fitter to compete for a place in Nigel Pearson’s side: “It was difficult for him and difficult for me because I knew I wasn’t ready to go in their first team.
“They’re winning every week and the players in midfield were playing well and he obviously doesn’t want to change that.
“Under-21 games aren’t really competitive enough to get your fitness. I played one of them and it was really a non-event. He wants me to come here and play games, then I go back and we’ll assess the situation then.”
With the move very much about getting back to fitness rather than a long-term switch, Wellens says he wants to leave the Blues better off when his loan is up on November 10th: “I’m a winner, when I go out on the football pitch I want to start winning games and this club needs wins at this moment in time to climb the table, and I’m looking forward to doing that.”

With all due respect Mr Wellens I'm not sure you should comment on this, you've only been at the club just over a week, I think that we the supporters have slightly more of an idea than yourself. To answer it we are not in a false position, how can we be if we've only won 1 game and have a goal difference of -11!!

If someone drew a map of the world with the UK in the middle of the Pacific ocean then that would be a false position. Our position is not.

Apparently our leader PJ wants the San Marino keeper on a ten day loan, with an option of three weeks if he keeps one clean sheet.

Wellens comes out with this crap and only been here 5 mins, what do's he know about ITFC ? of course its not a false position,we have not got the points to get us higher . Now my honourable club has become a recovery centre for clubs we should be competing with. Bringing in an unfit player, from a rival club, for a month loan, with a break in the middle, who immediately gets involved in first team matches .Shame on you all involved for degrading Ipswich Town f.c.

I've never felt so wunderwhelmed as I do with the two loanees DJ Campbell and Wellens. Neither could give a flying f@@@ about Ipswich Town FC other than the fact that they are using us as a bloody rehab centre. There is absolutely NO long term benefit ti ITFC. Their presence in the side only displaces OUR players (Hyam and Scotland) the effect of which on our player's moral was all too evident when a less than bother Scotland was brougjht on to replace a Loanee who had taken his starting line up. This Club is going DOWN under the ridiculous guidance of Evans / clegg. A f@@@ monkey would have a beter understaning of how to run this Club.

wellens you're exactly where you deserve to be. 2nd bottom in the championship and you'll be a league 1 player next year if you're still playing.

We are where we deserve to be, I don't anticipate us being there come the end of the season but that depends how many more poor decisions PJ makes, or how many more he is allowed to make before he is removed from his job. Wellens for example is not a good signing, it's short sighted and shows desperation from the manager, in a months time we are stuck in the same position, players who could have been playing and getting experience and game time are warming their ar$e$ on the bench, if they aren't good enough to play Jewell then get rid and get players in who are good enough, but not on short term loans, you are the manager ffs, signing unfiit(by his own admission) players on short term loans is not the way forward and if he's not fit enough to play for leicester how is he fit enough to walk straight into our team, Jewell is a complete clown, oh and just a little side note, after 81 games RK accumalated 109 points, after 83 games PJ has accumalated 105, what more does he have to do to get the sack, we are a laughing stock

forgot to mention that 81 games and 109 points was the point that Keane got sacked

No problem with Wellens but one thing stands out for me in his quote " not fit enough to go into Pearsons first team!! " but fit enough to play for us? to be picked before our own players? what does that say for our own players!!

Well i would not have put it quite like Clive but i do tend to agree Wellens is a good player,no doubt, but i fail too see how playing him for a few games moves us foward, managers are judged on the players he signs not the ones he doesnot,Gibbs. I though Ndaw had done pretty well in his last couple of games, than he fails to make the 16 against Cardiff WHY. At least there is a good chance of him becoming our player if we want.

GibbsITFC, thank you for your considered opinion of my assesment of the signing of Wellens and the current state of ITFC, I am entitled to my opinion just as you are and my opinion is Wellens is not a good signing(not saying he's not a good player when fit) and that PJ hasn't made a particularly good job of managing ITFC, if you think anything other than what I have just written then it clearly isn't me who is the uneducated moron.

ok Gibbs you tell me exactly what PJ has acheived since he has been Town manager? I look forward to your reply, and I have nothing against Jewell, I don't really care who is our manager I just want us to be succesful, as I suspect you do too, just that I measure success on league position and winning football matches, you clearly don't
