Jewell Considering Town Future After Hull Defeat
Saturday, 20th Oct 2012 17:37

Boss Paul Jewell says he will think over his Town position over the weekend after the Blues stretched their run of games without a win to 10 at Hull City. Jewell will consult with club owner Marcus Evans and other people close to him as he assesses what he feels is best not just for himself but for the club.

With banners calling for his exit again on show amongst the Town support, he says he empathises with where those supporters are coming from: “The fans of this football club, more than most, travel every other week huge distances and they’re not happy. I fully understand that and I accept the criticism that comes my way. I’ve had it before.

“What I want to do is what’s best for the club. I don’t want to quit but at the same time I have to realise what the best thing is for Ipswich, not just Ipswich, me as well, and the team. I have a lot of thinking to do over the weekend and we’ll see where it takes us.”

He says he considers where things are after each match, not just at the difficult times: “I think every game, whether we win a game or lose the game.

“It isn’t just one occasion. We have to look at the bigger picture for Ipswich and think ‘Am I the man to take them forward?’ and if I decide when I speak to Marcus and one or two other people who are close to me, if I decide the best thing for Ipswich is not to be here, then I’ll do that.

“I don’t want to do that, I’ve got to be honest and I hope the answers I come up with are positive answers but I’ve got to be honest with myself and honest with Marcus and honest with people close to me.”

As regards the game itself, he said: “Losing a late goal has been the bane of us really, but I think Hull deserved to win. I don’t think anyone who was at the game can say they didn’t deserve to win it.

“They put 31 crosses into the box and we didn’t stop any and they deservedly won the game. I’m not hiding behind anything.

“Late goals are very difficult to take, but the reason we concede late goals is because we allow crosses to come into the box.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce was relieved but felt his side deserved their victory: “For me it was the right result, we were the only ones who were trying to win it.

"I can understand Ipswich trying to hang on with the position they were in and scoring in the last couple of minutes is always great.”

Well I really hope he goes now, it's got to the point where we are going to look at avoiding relegation as a good season. I hate to say it, but we really do look like a club heading towards Division 1. I know some clubs, like NCFC have gone down and then bounced back stronger, but a lot more teams go down and don't come back. Can anyone truly see anything positive within the club at the moment? It just hasn't worked out for PJ, and although I think he is a good man who is trying his best, the fact is he just hasn't been the manager we all wanted. Too many loan players hasn't helped, especially with young players within the club who can do/have done just as good as those who have come in. Money well spent, or money thrown away? Fans money at that. In all my years as a Town supporter, I have never seen the club is such a sorry state, and neither have I been as worried that we are about to fall through the trap door and not come back. Sad days indeed.

Delaney was a rubbish defender for us. Absolute tosh. My ex wife commanded her box far better than that muppet. I heard Adam Proudlock had a good game the other week - do you want that muppet back in the side too.

I can't see how he can continue after stating his 'intent to consider his future' on Sky.
He looks a broken man and while he may well be a 'nice guy'? resigning is the only way i will have any respect for him now.
His record at ITFC is appalling and during his time at ITFC there has been absolutely no progress. His man management skills and team tactics have been questionable to say the least and for all his promises to build a team with youth here we are again with a team consisting of numerous short term loan signings and lacking youth that has showed promise. The situation is a shambles and has to end soon.
IMO ME is not to blame on this matter and we need to seriously think before we criticise a man that saved us from administration and has given both Jewell and Keane money to spend.
However i feel Clegg's position must be called into question. His last 4 years as a CEO have been nothing short of disastrous. Two poor management appointments,a lack of a long term stategy, dwindling crowd attendances, ridiculously high admission prices, a failure to understand the fans and it goes on.Ultimately a man who doesn't understand football.
Therefore while Jewell's departure is thankfully looking imminent i still worrry for the club while Clegg is CEO.

DOG - all I was saying is - Delaney has gone to Crystal Palace(a team I had for relegation at the start of the season) and they are pushing for a play off spot, Delaney has gone there and this has coincided with there good form, ie he must be playing well and he is scoring goals, something he never looked like doing for us and as a defender was always dodgy! so why can he do it for Palace , yet he was crap for us?

The strongest team assembled by PJ got ran over all over the park by Hull. Wow this surely is a milestone in club history!

Very poor team selection decision by PJ. Had time to sort deficiencies in the summer & past 18 months but never did anything right.

Please walk for the sake of the club and stop being selfish. U made Keano look so much better and is a complete joke. Please get lost before we say hello to Div 1

Thank God! Just having him consider resigning is a step in the right direction!

to be honest I dont really care who manages Town, the only criteria is they win football matches, Jewell has failed t o do that, pure and simple, seems like a decent guy, and time will tell if he is or not as if he is he will walk away now with a little bit of decency and respect intact, if he chooses to sit tight then he is just in it for the money, I suspect he has tried his best but am afraid that his best isn't gpod enough, and whilst it;s not nice for anyone to lose their job I feel it is inevitable for PJ now, good luck, thanks for doing everything that you have and it is a genuine shame it hasn't worked out PJ, goodbye

I do like Jewell as a person, If he was successful he would be in the role for many years to come.. But i'm afraid tactically and as man management is concerned he's not right for us. I wish him every success in he future. And i for one hope he does well! One of the gentlemen in the game. Sorry Paul.

These are dark days for the club, but please can we get behind the 11 blue shirts on the pitch?

I think PJ is a gent but his days are numbered, everyone seemed to be talking about a Robsonesque recovery but it just doesnt seem to be happening.

He might walk on Monday but surely would be better to have him manage the next two games...any thing less than 4 points then surely it will be adios?

This is my first post I was speaking to somebody last week who has just left Portman Road said the politics in the club was too much and the issues within the club were far deeper than PJ , The club needs a real over haul having a new manager will just cover up the cracks , as a manager would you really want 8 loan players ???? My gut feeling is the reason the squad was do bare going into this season was higher up the food chain , Clegg can not hide behind years of total rundown and also must do the right thing and leave the club

New gk, New cbs, New mids, New cf, same old result. Those of you who called for OUR players to be dropped in favour of other clubs players should be ashamed. A new manager is what we need! CLOWN OUT!!!

Come on PJ you know what you need to do...its not worked out for you which is a shame but the results speak for themselves. We have made no progress at all so do the right thing and give us a chance to save our season and stay in the division. Billy Davies or Gary Smith from Stevenage for me.

Poor Paul. I feel sorry for him if the problem is really deeper than just him. He is a good bloke, who tries to do the best with what he has got ( or is allowed to get )! If he walks, I think Clegg should consider his position too. Maybe Marcus Evans should think long and hard about his part in the club as well.......

Maybe we could have Harry on a part time basis until a decent candidate can be found. However unlikely that may be.

What's to think about? Cut the play acting Jewell and get going down the road!!

The utter chaos that this season represents means he has little choice, in my opinion. Long term plan out of the window, players not given more than one game to prove themselves, half a squad of loanees, a decent keeper dropped after one bad game. Without wishing to use a massive cliche, this is not the Ipswich Way. I hope as I write this he's on the phone to Evans jacking it in. He did what was required after the mess Keane got us in but (as I always said he wouldn't) he's taken us nowhere, backwards if anything, and the time has come for a change. I also think Clegg needs to answer some serious questions about his role in all this.

While all the attention is focused on jewel we should not forget that the club was destroyed by Kean. By the time he left the best players were either out of the door or had refused to sign new contracts. The reason kean left was because he could see what was coming. We should also remember that he was able to create such havoc because clegg had no experience of running a club and let him. Pj has started a long process of rebuilding but has again been hampered by cleggs ineptitude and a lack of understanding that when good assets are lost as kean lost them only significant investment can replace them

Take Clegg with you, no new manager will get any joy with him as CEO.
