Jewell Considering Town Future After Hull Defeat
Saturday, 20th Oct 2012 17:37

Boss Paul Jewell says he will think over his Town position over the weekend after the Blues stretched their run of games without a win to 10 at Hull City. Jewell will consult with club owner Marcus Evans and other people close to him as he assesses what he feels is best not just for himself but for the club.

With banners calling for his exit again on show amongst the Town support, he says he empathises with where those supporters are coming from: “The fans of this football club, more than most, travel every other week huge distances and they’re not happy. I fully understand that and I accept the criticism that comes my way. I’ve had it before.

“What I want to do is what’s best for the club. I don’t want to quit but at the same time I have to realise what the best thing is for Ipswich, not just Ipswich, me as well, and the team. I have a lot of thinking to do over the weekend and we’ll see where it takes us.”

He says he considers where things are after each match, not just at the difficult times: “I think every game, whether we win a game or lose the game.

“It isn’t just one occasion. We have to look at the bigger picture for Ipswich and think ‘Am I the man to take them forward?’ and if I decide when I speak to Marcus and one or two other people who are close to me, if I decide the best thing for Ipswich is not to be here, then I’ll do that.

“I don’t want to do that, I’ve got to be honest and I hope the answers I come up with are positive answers but I’ve got to be honest with myself and honest with Marcus and honest with people close to me.”

As regards the game itself, he said: “Losing a late goal has been the bane of us really, but I think Hull deserved to win. I don’t think anyone who was at the game can say they didn’t deserve to win it.

“They put 31 crosses into the box and we didn’t stop any and they deservedly won the game. I’m not hiding behind anything.

“Late goals are very difficult to take, but the reason we concede late goals is because we allow crosses to come into the box.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce was relieved but felt his side deserved their victory: “For me it was the right result, we were the only ones who were trying to win it.

"I can understand Ipswich trying to hang on with the position they were in and scoring in the last couple of minutes is always great.”

Anyone that blames Sheepshanks is way too simplistic. ME bought the £30mil debt for £6mil ish. That £6mil (on ME's watch) is now £60mil+. How is that increase of £54mil Sheepshanks fault?

On another note, Jewell was never the right person for ITFC. He has never been able to nurture youth talent and always had a penchant for older players. I hope he makes the right decision to leave the club.

The issue then is... will ME go for another manager that isn't right for the club?

Good news coming out of Portman Road at last! I believe he truly tried his best, but it was just no where near good enough!! Close the door on the way out.

As to replacement(s): how about getting George Burley back as general manager (or maybe Mills as someone has already mentioned) alongside a young tactically aware coach/manager, again with an Ipswich background, for example Tarricco, Russell Osman or Fabian Wilniss?

we need a proven manager, still working or one who has only been out a short time. Mick Mills is none of these, but a true legend in every sense of the word. Bryan Gunn was a legend at norwich and sadly that legend status was tainted by his managerial short comings. Mick Mills should stay out of the portman road hot seat, as romantic as it sounds, this would not work out well for him and the team. I wish my memories of mick and his connection to itfc to remain special and untainted. if the next guy in struggles to sort this mess out quite quickly we could go down, thats not what any of us want for mick. I honestly believe it will be redknapp until the end of the season. watch this space.

What is the point of backing him with 8 new loan players, playing one game and then sacking him?
This makes sense
"Surely we have to see how this new lineup does for a least 5 games. Even if we get rid of Jewell we probably will have to put up with rubbish Chris Hutchings as caretaker for a month.

I'd rather see if PJ can do anything with the new loanees for a few games. There aren't any managers who want the job now anyway"

Strange that he puts up the white flag after an AWAY game that was never going to be an easy fixture and after he has brought in so many new players AND with two winnable home fixtures to come ?

I'm not making any predictions on P.J leaving or possible replacements as this club is so unpredictable right now...

PJ looked dejected after the game and his tone if voice suggested he didn't expect to be in a job on Monday.

It's time now to think about replacements. Mick Mills publicly applies on Radio Suffolk but he's been out of the game for a while and admit it's probably past him now. Loads of other names have been mentioned, however it's all wild speculation.

As far as sacking Evans - are you mad? He's keeping the club alive - unless you have £100m+ spending money or know someone who does then none of that. Sheepshanks was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The collapse of the ITV digital deal combined with an unexpected relegation started the crisis. Sheepshanks was guilty only of being too passionate and allowing the manager too much freedom with signings. Both chairmen are hands off people who employed chief executives to manage the football administration. Evans could become more popular by breaking his silence. If completing the signing of players is totally down to Clegg then there's clearly something wrong there.

The club is sick at the moment but I'm not sure changing manager is the best medicine. However the change is inevitable so perhaps better sooner rather than later. To call for Clegg's head presumes knowledge of what happens behind the scenes but as a leader he is responsible for that side of the club. If he goes as well I won't lose any sleep. Of course I WILL lose sleep if PJ quits just by posting too much and following every rumour!

Marcus... changing the manager is the only medicine, there needs to be a shake up. Jewell idea of a shake up is to get in more short term loans, he has lost the plot.

If Jewell doesn,t go, then we as fans must make our feelings known verbally on tuesday.

If Sheepshanks is passionate about the club why cut all links with it. he was in a privliged postion he didnt have to purchase the chairmanship of the club. He ended up with a very well paid postion and paid himself a large bonus as well. I think Evans has made a mess of the club so far but at least hes paid for the privlige.

The man does not know which way to turn or what to say anymore .
'31 crosses into our box and we did not stop any of them.' ( ? )
How embarrassing .
Every game this season has been the same .
Must of been why why we signed God knows how many midfielders and no fullbacks .
Two unfit loanee central midfielders playing for 90 mins .
Seriously , the Man cannot be defended any further .
If he was a Governor in the the Ryman he would be slated .
The really scarey thing though is that his bosses seem reluctant to act .
Absolutely baffling .
Anybody read in the papers today that the Forest Boss wants to send back Jermaine Jenas back to Spurs ( a player with more talent than all our loanees put together ) and furthermore wants no more loanees .
How refreshing for Forest fans and how so far from our own depressing debacle .

Who really thought we would win today?

Make a descision after Derby and SheffieldWeds. Can't change a manger and the team in 7 seven days anyway.

(Although would be an opportunity for Chris Hutchings to show how little caoaching ability he really has.)

@dissboyitfc - perhaps you're right. However if we're in the same position in a year or two with another manager then what's been achieved? The real question is why we started the season with so many obvious holes in the squad. It was clear PJ was trying to get players in -- was it his fault, Clegg's, or both?

Laxfield_Llewellyn, Reading were that far off last year and look what happened. Clearly their position was more false than ours but nothing is impossible in this crazy division. I won't be putting any money on it though!!

PJ well and truly blown it today, playing players who were clearly not match fit and worst of all playing them for 90 minutes whilst young, hungry players sitting on the bench what a complete idiot and poor management. should have played Hyam and chops/scotland from the start then maybe player Reo and DJ towards the end to try and get an extra goal but he still hasn't learnt from previous mess ups. Still insists on Edwards in defence hopefully new manager will play him in the correct position and give someone else a chance.

I have no problem with Jewell as a person and I genuinely believe he has tried his best however the facts are plain for all to see with our performances, results and league position that his best efforts are not good enough.
Come on Paul please do one last thing to allow yourself some integrity and resign.

I'd be depressed after the game if we lost and faced a 200 mile bus ride home to Ipswich with Reo and his banter and SCD.

Perhaps Jewell's having another breakdown. Iit doesn't make any sense throwing the towel in this weekend. After the two home games would be the moment.

I don't care anymore. League 1 whatever, MICK MILLS please steady the ship, come on in, you'd be on a WIN/WIN situation. If we go down, we blame the last two managers, if we stay up. you'd be a hero. ME/SC lets do this, NOW!!!!

I think jewell will be gone by Monday morning. He tried his best but we are just going round in circles and bringing in all these loan players was the last act of desperation. We need a new manager with fresh ideas and the sooner the better. Nice bloke jewell, but sadly it didn't work out.
