Jewell Considering Town Future After Hull Defeat
Saturday, 20th Oct 2012 17:37

Boss Paul Jewell says he will think over his Town position over the weekend after the Blues stretched their run of games without a win to 10 at Hull City. Jewell will consult with club owner Marcus Evans and other people close to him as he assesses what he feels is best not just for himself but for the club.

With banners calling for his exit again on show amongst the Town support, he says he empathises with where those supporters are coming from: “The fans of this football club, more than most, travel every other week huge distances and they’re not happy. I fully understand that and I accept the criticism that comes my way. I’ve had it before.

“What I want to do is what’s best for the club. I don’t want to quit but at the same time I have to realise what the best thing is for Ipswich, not just Ipswich, me as well, and the team. I have a lot of thinking to do over the weekend and we’ll see where it takes us.”

He says he considers where things are after each match, not just at the difficult times: “I think every game, whether we win a game or lose the game.

“It isn’t just one occasion. We have to look at the bigger picture for Ipswich and think ‘Am I the man to take them forward?’ and if I decide when I speak to Marcus and one or two other people who are close to me, if I decide the best thing for Ipswich is not to be here, then I’ll do that.

“I don’t want to do that, I’ve got to be honest and I hope the answers I come up with are positive answers but I’ve got to be honest with myself and honest with Marcus and honest with people close to me.”

As regards the game itself, he said: “Losing a late goal has been the bane of us really, but I think Hull deserved to win. I don’t think anyone who was at the game can say they didn’t deserve to win it.

“They put 31 crosses into the box and we didn’t stop any and they deservedly won the game. I’m not hiding behind anything.

“Late goals are very difficult to take, but the reason we concede late goals is because we allow crosses to come into the box.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce was relieved but felt his side deserved their victory: “For me it was the right result, we were the only ones who were trying to win it.

"I can understand Ipswich trying to hang on with the position they were in and scoring in the last couple of minutes is always great.”

If this has as much truth as his comments about players coming in and the new plan of buying young hungry players I imagine he will still be here for Tuesdays game!

Why do we have to wait for him to decide? It's incredible that the Scarlet Pimpernel Evans hasn't pulled the trigger while his crumbling empire turns to dust - stop sitting on your hands Evans and make sure you don't screw it up again on the next appointment - god knows we will probably end up with someone like Dave Bassett if we leave it up to these imbeciles...

Please go Paul, you have too. This club needs new energy and I do not want to keep writing negative rubbish about how we have just dropped points.

Karl Robinson, Ian Holloway (bit of a long shot), Carl Fletcher, Billy Davies, Michael Appleton, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Solskjaer my choice but would be difficult to get him, though I was surprised when Keane came. Sure people will disagree with those but we need someone youthful manager with a fresh outlook on the game, or at least someone who knows how to motivate players.

Just leave now, dont even think about it! Just leave, we need to sort out our season ASAP! We need to get the right man in though. Id agree with a lot of posts here and say we need an up coming manager for our long term plan. Someone like Karl Robinson or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Although, saying that we need to get out of this mess so maybe an inexperienced manager would not be right. Important decisions need to be made. Clegg, better not mess up another appointment like he has done with Keane and Jewell who have arguably been the worst two managers in the history of the club.

What is the point of backing him with 8 new loan players, playing one game and then sacking him?

Surely we have to see how this new lineup does for a least 5 games. Even if we get rid of Jewell we probably will have to put up with rubbish Chris Hutchings as caretaker for a month.

I'd rather see if PJ can do anything with the new loanees for a few games. There aren't any managers who want the job now anyway.

Yup, there is much to respect in Jewell as a man if he's willing to genuinely consider leaving due to his abject failure at Town.
Personally, I say good luck PJ, you certainly seem a decent bloke but you simply can't run a football club (which you have now demonstrated on a number of occasions).
Now please Town, think very, VERY carefully about who to get in next - if any team and their supporters ever needed a break after so many abjectly miserable years it's us.
Goodbye PJ and COYB!!!!

Im a great believer that owners and chairman should stay in the background, however in times of crisis they should show leadership. We havent seen that since the Cobbolds were in charge. Please dont say Sheepshanks because of him we are in this bloody mess.

Oh yeah lets wait another 5 games! No, our season has basically ended already. People that are saying ME should go, think again?! We'd be much worse of now with ME going. If you haven't noticed he is the person that is running our club. Pulls the plugs = No ITFC.

I'm as mortified as the rest when I look at what's happening, I really think that PJ has run out of ideas. I have one question thats really bothering me about the possible vacancy as there's no-one really out there, is there? So....

Who?

He's gone from being confident that Evans is backing him, and then suddenly is considering his future? What has made him see the light?

How can you blame Sheepshanks for this mess, when he was Chairman we watched the best 8 years of football for many years. The problem goes deeper than this, it is about time Evans showed his face if he is so concerned about what is happening at ITFC....Also needs to look how the club is run by Mr Clegg

Do you think I am in safe in booking my holiday in May, in other words it will not matter if I miss the play-off final..

Carlisleaway Easy sheepshanks spent money we didnt have and gambled with our club. He never lost out personally as he never put any money in. He lived the dream and then walked. so i say it is down to him. Many local businesses suffered when he took Town into adminstration all i hear is he a gentleman and a true blue well where is he now.

Who was the last Ipswich manager to quit, rather than wait to be sacked? Has there been one?

h32 added 18:40 - Oct 20
Mick Mills wouldn't be everyone's choice for obvious reasons - but all considered, I would give him my backing - absolute LEGEND - and talks much Football sense, and tactically switched on.

Marcus Evans could do much worse than go for this - he would certainly have fan base support, if that means what it should to him.

Oh well thats all in the past now i was lucky enough to watch Town all through the Sir Bobby years i feel sorry for the youngsters who have to put up with the current dross. Its easy to support a winning team so hats off to the town fans of today for staying loyal.

If he goes what has he left for the next manager apart from a mess.Every one of us on here would pick a different starting eleven from the players avaliable to us.

h32 added 18:44 - Oct 20
..... I think there was evidence today that players need time to 'gel', and certainly need to be match fit - which with 'loans' is invariably NOT the case.

marcus139 added 18:46 - Oct 20
Please god no, not Mick Mills. He wasn't succesful years ago, he definitely would not be now. Modern day players would walk all over him. However, he does have a role at the club, defensive coach maybe...
