Jewell Confident No New Man Lined Up Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 13:42 Blues boss Paul Jewell says owner Marcus Evans has dismissed claims that owner Marcus Evans is lining up former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley as his replacement. The Town manager spoke to Evans yesterday with the owner continuing to give him his support.
Speaking at this morning’s pre-match press conference, Jewell said: “I spoke with Marcus yesterday and he wants me to stay.
“I’ve got a fantastic and open relationship with him and if he wanted to sound out another manager, he wouldn’t have to do it behind my back, he’d tell me, it’s as simple as that. And having spoken to him yesterday [he isn’t].”
The Town boss says Evans wanted to speak to him after he had said he was considering his position in the wake of the 2-1 defeat at Hull City: “He wanted to talk to me, he’d seen the comments and read them and wanted to know what I was thinking.
“It’s great for me to have the support of the owner. It would be nice if we could get a few results and get a smile on everyone’s face.
“But you’re not going to stop rumours and if read the players or I believed everything everyone told me, I don’t sleep at night anyway, but I definitely wouldn’t sleep if I was worrying about who is going to take my job. If Marcus wants to make a change, he’s going to make a change.”
Jewell, who cut a much more upbeat figure this morning, admits to having made the weekend comments as a reaction to the defeat at Hull which stretched Town’s winless run to 10: “It’s been a tough time lately and I was just so fed up after the game and disappointed with our performance.
“I have to go and do press [after the game] and sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that when you get home you probably regret.
“I said them, so I’m not going to run away from them, that’s the way I felt at that moment in time. But [since then I have] spoken with Marcus at length and have had a lot of support from football — managers and even players who have played here, I had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer on Saturday night.”
He says he talked to the squad at training yesterday: “I spoke with the staff and the players. You know when you’ve lost the dressing room and I definitely haven’t done that.
“Not every player at this club will want me as manager but not every player at Manchester United would want Sir Alex as manager - there are always people who are not happy.
“The large majority of players have come to me and have said ‘I hope you stay’. I just want to try and ensure that in the short-term we get a few results and hopefully we can move on. I do believe we’re in a false position given the team we’ve got.”
He says he doesn’t want to quit and that the situation is very different to the one at Pride Park when he left tomorrow’s opponents Derby County: “I don’t want to resign. I don’t want to walk out. We’re in a battle at the moment.
“I left Derby County and people think I walked out, but I didn’t really. The owners had told me that if they could afford to sack me they would do, so I said they wouldn’t need to worry about the money, if you’ve lost faith in me, I’ll go.
“That’s not the case here, the owner hasn’t lost faith in me, I’m going to keep going. I know I can’t keep going without winning matches, I understand that.
“But in the last four matches we’ve taken the lead in all of those games and we could be sat here with 10 more points, although it would have been fortuitous on Saturday. But the games against Cardiff, Brighton and Barnsley we could easily have won.”

So our club dies a slow death, going down...down...down on the back of ME's, Clegg's and PJ's ego's. Watching it happen are a dwindling band of supporters until the club that we all love is in league 2 and unable to pay ME back what we owe him, and he winds the club up. I know its the worst case senario, but hell this board with Evans at the head is taking this club to the depths of hope its self. So sod all of you PJ lovers and apologists, this period of the clubs history is at a crossroads and no one has a good sense of direction. ITID

I expect Putney Blue,Dozzells Bobblehat Sibelius 8 and Greenkingtone, will all be at the supporters meeting, thats if you are season ticket holders ,tutting at anybody who dares to criticise and calling them cretins or 12 year olds. I sir am not a cretin, was at Highbury to see Arsenal beat us 6-1 about the time Sibelius8 mentions and would point out that this is the lowest constant position this club has occupied since I started following them AND STATS DONT LIE. The fans of this club are more tolerant than most,as you would find if you travel to other grounds as I have over the years;and Paul Jewell would have had his marching orders before this in 99% of clubs. The crowd will sit at Portman Rd quietly and accept whatever dross they are watching rather than criticise or vote with their feet. If as shareholders they receive the club accounts they will also see that nearly 10m paid been in interest over the last 3 years, and as virtually all the debt is owned by Mr Evans it must have been paid to him.In the previous era ,the Cobbolds were not in it for personal gain and only had the interest of the club at heart. I am not sure where Mr Evans loyalty lies having no ties to the area, and does the Major not live in Surrey with Paul Jewells family home near Leeds? Why doesnt Manager have the guts to attend Wednesdays meeting instead of sending his Deputy I wonder? If the above mentioned are there he need not worry,it is usually a sycophantic gathering similar to the shareholders AGM where due reverence is shown to the top table. Right let's recap, we are bottom of the Championship with Peterborough. If we try to be as subjective as possible and not biased towards Ipswich Town. Surely for any club in the Championship who are considered at worst a mid table side (we've finished 15th or better every year since we got relegated back down from the Prem) that find themselves with real relegation concerns before christmas must have to make big changes while there's still time for form to improve. I can't see how things can right themselves by giving the current setup more time, the morale in the camp is rock bottom as it is. A fresh manager is the proactive way forward instead of the cross your fingers and hope method that the men above Jewell seem to have adopted by allowing him to keep his job and loan us loads of short term players in from all over the place in the hope it'll fix things.

When he says he is considering leaving, the votes on comments wanting him out are positive. When he says he is backed, the same comments are rated in the negative. Surely they should be more positive?

There is one more thing to consider is Ipswich Town a Tax write off for Mr Evans main business? If so it makes Jewells position very safe.

seasider - you have missed the point of the posts totally, none of us said everything is ok and i have no issue with people airing their views on here, it is the manner in which they are expressed and total over reaction of some that is annoying.

> no communication from those at board level to the fans Perhaps the problem is the Board, or lack of it. We used to have a Director for this, a Director for that, but now it just seems to be the Chief Executive on his own (not a football man and carrying out the wishes of the owner). The owner won't show his face and the Chief Exec is not very good at communicating with supporters, and alienates them with ticket prices etc, which leaves Paul Jewell as the face of ITFC pretty much all the time. Where is the executive structure at ITFC and where is the football nouse?

Marcus Evans is no fool. My guess is the problem is that he does not have a good enough successor lined up to take over from PJ.

I wouldn't want Jewell to go unless we had a replacement ready to go. For all those who scoffed at the Curbishley link as not good enough as he has been out of the game for too long he is about as good a manager as Ipswich will attract so be careful what you wish for. He had already turned Wolves down other than living here there is no reason to come to Ipswich. Jewell has assembled a team of loanees to try and dig a way out, getting rid of him now would cause chaos with them it's just too impractical. 2 home games for them to gel whilst Evans sounds out a cert replacement seems sensible to me but I'm in the minority and aware of it.

Nobody can blame PJ for not quitting the club. He wants to be pushed so he can have his contract paid up. Would you turn down probably your last wage packet for several years....He's looking after number 1 and not ITFC.

I think the time has probably come to change the manager, but I will still be there tomorrow supporting the team as I will continue to do so whether PJ is in charge or not. Everyone should back the team during the game and leave any negative chanting until after the final whistle. The confidence in the team is low enough at the moment so I think that us supporters should do our bit and get behind the team from the first minute to the last. COYB
