Jewell Confident No New Man Lined Up
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 13:42

Blues boss Paul Jewell says owner Marcus Evans has dismissed claims that owner Marcus Evans is lining up former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley as his replacement. The Town manager spoke to Evans yesterday with the owner continuing to give him his support.

Speaking at this morning’s pre-match press conference, Jewell said: “I spoke with Marcus yesterday and he wants me to stay.

“I’ve got a fantastic and open relationship with him and if he wanted to sound out another manager, he wouldn’t have to do it behind my back, he’d tell me, it’s as simple as that. And having spoken to him yesterday [he isn’t].”

The Town boss says Evans wanted to speak to him after he had said he was considering his position in the wake of the 2-1 defeat at Hull City: “He wanted to talk to me, he’d seen the comments and read them and wanted to know what I was thinking.

“It’s great for me to have the support of the owner. It would be nice if we could get a few results and get a smile on everyone’s face.

“But you’re not going to stop rumours and if read the players or I believed everything everyone told me, I don’t sleep at night anyway, but I definitely wouldn’t sleep if I was worrying about who is going to take my job. If Marcus wants to make a change, he’s going to make a change.”

Jewell, who cut a much more upbeat figure this morning, admits to having made the weekend comments as a reaction to the defeat at Hull which stretched Town’s winless run to 10: “It’s been a tough time lately and I was just so fed up after the game and disappointed with our performance.

“I have to go and do press [after the game] and sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that when you get home you probably regret.

“I said them, so I’m not going to run away from them, that’s the way I felt at that moment in time. But [since then I have] spoken with Marcus at length and have had a lot of support from football — managers and even players who have played here, I had a lovely text from Lee Bowyer on Saturday night.”

He says he talked to the squad at training yesterday: “I spoke with the staff and the players. You know when you’ve lost the dressing room and I definitely haven’t done that.

“Not every player at this club will want me as manager but not every player at Manchester United would want Sir Alex as manager - there are always people who are not happy.

“The large majority of players have come to me and have said ‘I hope you stay’. I just want to try and ensure that in the short-term we get a few results and hopefully we can move on. I do believe we’re in a false position given the team we’ve got.”

He says he doesn’t want to quit and that the situation is very different to the one at Pride Park when he left tomorrow’s opponents Derby County: “I don’t want to resign. I don’t want to walk out. We’re in a battle at the moment.

“I left Derby County and people think I walked out, but I didn’t really. The owners had told me that if they could afford to sack me they would do, so I said they wouldn’t need to worry about the money, if you’ve lost faith in me, I’ll go.

“That’s not the case here, the owner hasn’t lost faith in me, I’m going to keep going. I know I can’t keep going without winning matches, I understand that.

“But in the last four matches we’ve taken the lead in all of those games and we could be sat here with 10 more points, although it would have been fortuitous on Saturday. But the games against Cardiff, Brighton and Barnsley we could easily have won.”

It obviously does what? Assume some sort of typo!?

You're not a Town supporter. Stated that yourself previously. As a result just go. I've never read such rubbish coming from one single person. Little man syndrome I think!!

To be honest, I'm pleased that players are backing the manager. They aren't blaming and pointing the finger. They know that we all need to come together to move forward. I, for one, will continue to come each week and cheer for my side, the one I've loved since a boy and the one I'll never leave.

TooleyBlue. Sorry mate but you are seeing a different "Town" team the one i,ve been watching. One decent half against Cardiff is about it lately & that frankly is just not good enough. Trust me, if a change of manager is not made this week, we are definately heading into league 1.

@h32 fully agree with your comments i cannot understand how anyone can support Jewell and if im honest most of the current crop of players i back that up by saying what saleble assets do we have? Since Evans took over so much has gone wrong. I dont know if he's saved us financialy because the debt to him is bigger than ever so if he pulls the plug what happens then. I worry for our future the cobblds left a great legacy now that seems like a distant dream. No Club has the right to success it has to be planned for and takes hard work on the pitch ive seen neither for a long time.

pinewoodblueboy - people said the same last year didn't they? We certainly have a better squad now. If you're watching your son play football and he has a bad game, would you disown him and send him away? Whatever happens, I will support the team and the manager. If he decides to go I respect that and believe he will be man enough to know if he believes its right. His courage to do that job is impressive whatever. You feel about him.

nitroblue1970. Maybe PJ is no Bobby Robson, but in the early days, people would have said BR is no Alf Ramsey.

I don't get personal. I've always liked PJ. But he needs to go.

I supported him all through last season, even after the horrendous thrashings by Peterborough, Southampton etc, although I had slight misgivings after the end of season slump. But how many chances can he have? I'm tired of hearing how people think he can turn it around. He has got us into this position to start with!

His tactics very rarely work. When we go a goal down he has no answer. We play one upfront at home, then wonder why we struggle to score a single goal and then have to hang on desperately to get anything.
We have been told one thing, and then he proceeds to do the complete opposite to what he said he would do. No more loans eh? Yeah right whatever! We once again have a team of which the spine is all temporary. What's the point?
He continually changes the team, dropping players seemingly at random, regardless how well they have been playing. How the hell does that help a side gel? There seems to be no 'team' , just individuals some of which have other clubs colours running through their veins not ours. That is not progress of any sort, I fail to see how anyone can say otherwise.

He's had long enough to sort out the mess RK left and he's actually made it worse. What exactly were the pre-season expectations, as I'm sure he's way off the target he would have been set.

I'm going tomorrow, and of course I hope we win. But how can this seriously be allowed to continue? Where's the progress? It is getting worse and some people seem blind to the raw facts infront of them. There is clearly something wrong and feel we are in very real danger of going down. PJ clearly doubts himself. How is that good for morale?

Jim Magilton got sacked for finishing 8th, yet PJ has sent us to the foot of the table and is still here. Yep nothing like consistency is there!

I despair at the way my club is being run. It's just no fun anymore.

truthhurts - 'not a Town Supporter' ? -another who can't / don't read posts correctly - prove to me where I have EVER stated I am not a Town Supporter - probably spent more following the Club than you've earned - emphasis on 'probably' not 'have'.

As for explaining the obvious answer to your question - I won't embarrass you.

TooleyBlue. This isn,t just about 1 bad game, but a long succesion of poor performances. I will however be their as always tomorrow night supporting the team, but have no faith in our manager or his coaching staff & will be letting my feelings known as such.

Read it pinewoodblueboy but how will the team not be affected by your message?

TooleyBlue. I will be SUPPORTING THE TEAM, but not the manager. Do you not see the difference?

TooleyBlue added 22:48 - Oct 22
The manager IS part of the team and the player will pick up on negative messages from the crowd. They are loyal to Jewell - can you not understand the impact it will still have? I guess not.

Looking at the many good points made on here tonight, when have we last watched a good performance from an Ipswich team. I am not that concerned about Promotion to the Premier League at the moment, just to see 11 players giving there all for 93 minutes and let us come away from Portman Road saying the lads played well tonight, glad I came out.
This obviously does not matter with Messers Evans and Clegg who thinks Paul Jewell is an awfully nice chap who should take our beloved club down to the 1st Division. Interesting to see how the fans would take a win against Derby, maybe overcome with shock so I hope we have plenty of medics available tomorrow night.

Could it have been a mistake in sacking Magic as these 2 muppets(Keane & Jewell) have done nothing & cost the club a fortune in wages.
Jim didn't do to bad a job & if Evens wanted to give him help he could have brought in Burley for support??
I have supported ITFC for forty years & at the moment it is a Shambles
Sir Bobby would be mortified.

Guaranteed we will go 1-0 up tomorrow.get to about 65 minutes then that weird, horrible silent atmosphere of negativity from the crowd goes round, Jewell will make 2 panic subs, take off whoever is playing well and we lose 2-1 :-(

Really not enjoying the crowd at Portman Road at the moment.

I hate to say this, really really hate to say this as it is quite similar a noise that a Norfolk cow makes; we need a 12th man, where are ya?

You're a dead man walking, Jewell and everyone knows it. You have taken us to such a low that winning tomorrow won't put much of a smile on any of our faces. You and your team of part-time signings need 6 or 7 wins on the bounce to put a smile on our faces. I hope we don't lose and if you can turn us around, that would be great. But I have no faith in you whatsoever and even less respect for you.
Produce a miracle or leave, because you haven't shown anything over the last 22 months to suggest that you're worth sticking with.

Over the last two weeks we have people saying Evans Out!!! Clegg out!!! Jewell out!!!!

Breaking these down: -

Evans out ok fine its easy pay 80 million and put in 20 million a year and you get your wish if you do not have at least 100 million in you back pocket shut up with out marcus there would be no town or we could I guess be owned Chanari(Sorry i just know thats a bad spelling) or we could be owned by the porn chain of Gold and Sullivan or even worse Ken Bates I used to know a guy who was the head of the fan club of chelsea and he was not allowed to even mention his name on any media as he would of been fined for contempt of court.(oh dear if Marcus was the same there would be another 1000 bankrptcies in Ipswich!!)

Secondly Clegg.. He is the fall guy his job is to be the hated and I think in this role he is successful come on we all do hate him lol.

Jewell what is the answer he seems a great guy and is hurting. It comes down to do we put a hurting animal out of his pain or do we stick with and and he thanks us 10 fold by turning it round.

Ok I have waffled and its complicated but Who ever owns the club and yes if I won the euro million I would still be skint as I would try buy because I am a town fan and yes I am hurting as well but who ever manages or plays for my GREAT club I am 1000% behind WE ARE IPSWICH!! and WE will return what ever pain happens... For Sir Alf, Sir Bobby and Ipswich!!!!
