Edwards: Not All Squad Backing Boss
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012 09:00

Town captain Carlos Edwards has reiterated his support for under-fire boss Paul Jewell but believes that some of his team-mates could be on an entirely different wavelength. Right-back Edwards, who will be 34 on Wednesday, even admits that some players would prefer to see Jewell depart Portman Road.

He said: “I have told the gaffer I want him to stay but some players don’t want him here. That doesn’t necessarily mean that when a new manager comes in their situation is going to change.

“They need to know that at the present time they need to be on the side of the manager we have because if he goes it doesn’t mean that they will be playing week in, week out, for the new one.

“I would say yes, all the players are behind the manager, but I can say yes and deep down inside I know there are players who hide their feelings.

“I’m not going to come out and say we want the manager sacked or we want the manager to stay. I’m just one person and I can say I want him to stay, but that’s just me.”

Asked if he ever gets a bit nasty and steams into players he may feel are not pulling their weight, Edwards added: “I try to but some think I am just picking on them.

“But if they think that they haven’t seen some of the horrible players I have encountered. I have played with some who have called me names that I didn’t think existed in the vocabulary.

“I just get on with my game because I know all they mean is for me to get my finger out because I can be better than I have been doing.

“There are some players who still need breast-feeding, if I can put it that way. You still need to put an arm round them but sometimes they need a kick up the backside rather than an arm round them. It could be because they have too much money too soon, but who’s to know? Only time will tell.”

Edwards is not blind to his own shortcomings and was honest enough to confess that his display in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hull, which leaves Town without a win in 10 games and still just one place off the bottom of the Championship table, did not rank among his best.

He said: “I think everyone needs a kick up the backside, including me. The gaffer gave me a week off recently and told me [after Saturday] that whatever happens I will never get a week off again.

“I took it on the chin. It didn’t work in my favour to have the week off. When I have a few days off it seems to take me a week to get going again.

“That’s just how it is but I’m the first to put my hands up and admit I did have a rubbish game on Saturday. I’m not pointing fingers but I don’t think the team performed in the way that we could and at this level you need everyone to be at least 90 per cent to have a good chance of getting something from the game.”

Irrefutable proof then that Jewell has lost the dressing room. Sounds like there is a rift between players too, those who want him to stay and those that don't.

There is no way back from this than for Jewell to go.

Dirty washing in public. Edwards shouldn't be spouting off this sort of thing. As MIck Mills said on Saturday a manager only has 11 friends and they are the ones on the field. We don't need the Captain coming out with this sort of rubbish.

I agree, bergholt. This could be true of any club, but at Ipswich it is affecting results. Second goal on Saturday saw zero desire from anytime to close the full back, stop the cross, or win the header. Paul Jewell has LOST the faith of his players.

OUUUT NOOOW!

These sorts of comments, as honest as I'm sure they are don't help in the current situation. Just shows the reality and confirms that PJ's time has gone and that he should go.

I wonder who the players are that would like him out? I have my suspicions!

Edwards is getting annoying... perhaps P.J should start reading newspapers and TWTD... just a thought.

Between Jewell and Edwards' comments since Saturday, the game tonight has become nothing more than a sideshow. Worrying, worrying times.

@Vic: I reckon JET (after being publicly singled out on Saturday), Smith, probably now also Loach, and then its hard to suggest any others cos they're all bloody loan players!!

'I have told the gaffer I want him to stay but some players don't want him here. That doesn't necessarily mean that when a new manager comes in their situation is going to change.'

So the players not in the team want him out....is that really irrefutable proof he's 'lost the dressing room'? No.

Especially when the next quote is
'I would say yes, all the players are behind the manager, but I can say yes and deep down inside I know there are players who hide their feelings'

Final nail in the coffin.

Go Jewell, you are truly bereft of new ideas.

Now.

ALB, Loach, Smith, Ainsley, Hyam, Carson, JET, Scotland, Ellington, Lee Martin, Ronan Murray, Joe Whight... and, even Luongo (a loanee) probably don't hold Jewell in a high regard. He has messed them all around or not given them a fair go in his quest to destroy the club.

Tonight is key. If we lose, can he seriously stay? That said, he is just a lame duck manager... soon to depart, just 'when' is the question. Even if he won the next 2 games, would that save his job? Nope.

Even if Jewell kept us up this season, does anyone seriously think his contract would be extended? Seriously? With that in mind, I am not sure why Marcus Evans is waiting (unless he is soucing the next manager).

Loach, Hyam, JET, Drury, Smith...maybe N'daw as well...Carson too probably. Lee martin as well, ALB no doubt, .....mostly the younger squad members.

Prehaps the loaness are holding things in the dressing room together at the moment? But for how much longer?

Wow. How many times has Jewell claimed he hasn't lost the dressing room? Quite poor for the captain of the side to come out and say something like that. I'd like to know what players want Jewell out and see if they are the ones who have played like garbage this season. Player power always get their own way in the end!

Why on earth are we doing this in public.Jewell's self deliberations and now a suddenly vocal Edwards...support the boss.... But he needs a win to stay in place..........then I want him to stay but not everyone does ! Someone in charge of media/PR needs to get a grip

Two things spring to mind
1. PJ, it's time to go.
2. Edwards isn't the brightest spark & therefore probably not the best skipper.

After all this perhaps Edwards should go too.

The key issue is players with too much money and too little brain.

Edwards is as good as anyone in the team, but as he knows that is not saying much, but perhaps his efforts are a little more worthy since he is clearly playing out of position week in and week out.

However, if anyone thought otherwise they now know he is not captain material, and is therefore part of the problem and not the solution. We lack leaders on the field and that starts with the 'captain', if he and other senior players were a little stronger maybe they would not have let their manager down so badly, and not have to go to press to try and save his job and, one suspects their own careers.

at least the club captain has a voice

isn't it time we heard from independent "Ipswich 1st" and the "official" supporters club? their silence on the biggest crisis in 50 years at portman road is deafening, those splinters must be hurting by now............

phil / gav - interview opportunity?

There is no way a captain should be mouthing off like this. It totally unprofessional, its not the first time and it doesn't help our current plight

I'm losing faith in Carlos, as I am Paul

don't care if he has 'lost the dressing room' i'm more concerned that he has 'lost the plot'!

Edwards is a very poor right back and even poorer Captain ,it would appear with no brain .
The players he may have lost have or been listed above have mostly proved they are not upto this league anyway Smith ,Carson,Drury,ALB over the last 3 seasons .
Get Reo Coker as captain and drop Martin ,if he has not signed a new contract do not play him .

An anonymous owner; a CEO who knows little of football culture; a manager all at sea; an on field captain who goes on record that some of his team don't support their manager. This sounds like things are rotten from top to bottom. Surely these are the darkest days this wonderful club have ever seen.

We question the managers position, maybe we should be looking at some of the players. Are all the players really commited to the club? Because over half the players at the club now Jewell has brought in. The players really need to look at themselves in the mirror......
