Edwards: Not All Squad Backing Boss
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012 09:00

Town captain Carlos Edwards has reiterated his support for under-fire boss Paul Jewell but believes that some of his team-mates could be on an entirely different wavelength. Right-back Edwards, who will be 34 on Wednesday, even admits that some players would prefer to see Jewell depart Portman Road.

He said: “I have told the gaffer I want him to stay but some players don’t want him here. That doesn’t necessarily mean that when a new manager comes in their situation is going to change.

“They need to know that at the present time they need to be on the side of the manager we have because if he goes it doesn’t mean that they will be playing week in, week out, for the new one.

“I would say yes, all the players are behind the manager, but I can say yes and deep down inside I know there are players who hide their feelings.

“I’m not going to come out and say we want the manager sacked or we want the manager to stay. I’m just one person and I can say I want him to stay, but that’s just me.”

Asked if he ever gets a bit nasty and steams into players he may feel are not pulling their weight, Edwards added: “I try to but some think I am just picking on them.

“But if they think that they haven’t seen some of the horrible players I have encountered. I have played with some who have called me names that I didn’t think existed in the vocabulary.

“I just get on with my game because I know all they mean is for me to get my finger out because I can be better than I have been doing.

“There are some players who still need breast-feeding, if I can put it that way. You still need to put an arm round them but sometimes they need a kick up the backside rather than an arm round them. It could be because they have too much money too soon, but who’s to know? Only time will tell.”

Edwards is not blind to his own shortcomings and was honest enough to confess that his display in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hull, which leaves Town without a win in 10 games and still just one place off the bottom of the Championship table, did not rank among his best.

He said: “I think everyone needs a kick up the backside, including me. The gaffer gave me a week off recently and told me [after Saturday] that whatever happens I will never get a week off again.

“I took it on the chin. It didn’t work in my favour to have the week off. When I have a few days off it seems to take me a week to get going again.

“That’s just how it is but I’m the first to put my hands up and admit I did have a rubbish game on Saturday. I’m not pointing fingers but I don’t think the team performed in the way that we could and at this level you need everyone to be at least 90 per cent to have a good chance of getting something from the game.”

Further evidence that, however much I love Carlos as a player, he is not a captain. Aside from the washing of linen in public (very stupid, Carlos), this says it all:

'Asked if he ever gets a bit nasty and steams into players he may feel are not pulling their weight, Edwards added: “I try to but some think I am just picking on them."'

Sorry, but that's not a captain.

We need a fresh start, a new broom (Manager) to sweep clean and an owner to put his hands deep into his pockets and replace the lot of them. Whatever would Sir Bobby or Sir Alf have thought?

Comments like this on the eve of a crucial match does not give us much hope does it.
I heard the interview on Radio Suffolk this morning and think Edwards probably said a little too much and should have kept his thoughts to himself. We will see tonight whether the players back the Manager and nothing short of effort as per the West Ham home match last season will do. These comments I may add are contrary to the reports that come out of the training ground where it is said team spirit is very good. We will see tonight.

How is this helping carlos? Perhaps you should keep quiet and start performing on the pitch with the other 10! Granted PJ is making a mess of it but i repeat, how is this helping, just keep it buttoned

Lets get this straight, we have a manager who is considering his future and tactically naive/inept . A captain who thinks some of the players are not with the manager but seems not to be sure so indecisive. A CEO who at this great time of need just like the summer has gone missing and is thinking he is above all this so cannot make a comment.
All these people are paid employees of our once proud club , all should perform starting tonight or get out . Alot of my hard earned cash has gone and will continue to go on supporting the club i have loved for 43 years. Players , Manager and CEO stop taking all the supporters for granted and get your bl--dy fingers out now !!

Jewell - situation untenable.

Edwards - I'm not sure the incoming manger will make you captain after this.

Hyam aside, the other players are not playing as they have not been doing the business. A new manager will want to bring his own players in, and a lot of these players will end up on the scrap heap if they don't pull their fingers out.

lack of leadership is endemic in the club from top to bottom. Managers don't say what Jewell said on Saturday and Captains don't say what Edwards has said today. We have a mysterious owner who make no mistake, is making money out of the club and putting very little in, a CEO who know bugger all about football and this spreads down the chain. The dressing room is reminiscent of the one in 94/95 (I think I have the right year) when Ipswich got relegated from the Prem. Discord, disharmony and a manager who had lost the dressing room. This is a sad time for the club I have loved for nearly 50 years, if change doesn't happen soon then I fear we may disappear into the lower leagues and not come back, it will take one hell of a manger to sort this lot out, maybe relegation and a young squad might just be the answer???

The fact that Edwards has gone public with this implies to me that his support for Jewell isn't as solid as he claims.

Decent, solid player is Edwards but he is not and never will be Captain material. But who else is there? The club is completely bereft of strong characters and role models and is plagued with moron journeymen who have no interest in ITFC.

Lot of guessing on who wants Jewell out,

Not sure why people think Loach wants him out
Loach was poor at Watford and could not make the first team, yet Jewell gave him a lifeline and signed him, Jewell has then stuck with him even when he was playing poorly.
Loach cost us the game at Cardiff even he admitted to that, So Jewell replaced him with Henderson who was the man of the match.
Right thing for Jewell to do.

Loach is a big lad and earning very good money that the fans pay out to watch, That goes for all the players.

Best that Jewell makes a desision than not, At least he is trying to do something which is more than some of the players.

Dont think Jewell can take us forward but have to say he is trying and has Ipswich at heart, if he does go which I think he wil I would like Evens to say to the players that are not pulling thier wieght you can go too.

The failure to bring in a decent captain is one of the biggest failings of Keane and Jewell. We had captains like Mowbray, De Vos and Magilton over recent years, then followed them with the silent Leadbitter (the worst captain in my living memory ) and Edwards! We need a strong leader on the pitch as well as off of it.

not being funny but if there is a new manager appointed soon, I doubt he would play Edwards at right-back or possibly even in the team, hence this public support, trying to save his own back as well as the manager's, because let's face it, he is a poor right-back, but he does put the effort in!

who is in charge of PR at Portman road?
First Jewell jibbering, now Edwards- I do not think anyone is in charge of anything - god knows what else goes on that we do not hear about.

Whoever ITFC employ in the PR department needs to pull their finger out. Edwards and Jewell are being too honest which contrasts with Clegg who isn't being honest enough and Evans who should raise his profile slightly during a very difficult period.

Clearly propaganda

Weird and completely dumbfounding statement all around really. This is a behind-closed-doors conversation so why has this been made public on the eve of Jewell potentially departing?

Unhappy players and division in the camp happens in every changing room. As captain though i'd rather read a statement which was a rally cry, a do or die call ahead of 2 massive games for Jewell. This is powder puff and unsettling...

Sorry Edwards, you've been a fairly decent servant without really setting thew PR alight but if i were a new manager looking on, you wouldn't be my new skipper!

If there is unrest then it just confirms to me that Jewell has to leave because we need everyone or at least most people pulling together in our situation. If players dont respect the manager then they're unlikely to be at there best and we need someone who can galvanise us and bring back some pride and spirit. At the same time we can go on about Jewell all day but the players have to be brave tonight, if they're not playing for Jewell play for there own self respect and mostly the supporters who have they've let down so far this season.

This should not be discussed with the media. If it is an issue Edwards should raise the issue as captain with Paul Jewell

Edmunds5 added 14:10 - Oct 23
He maybe shouldn't say this to the media, but least there is a bit of fire in his belly, all we've heard from our players is either criticism of fans like JET and Chops have done or Chops saying how he will score 25 goals this season. At least Carlos is being up front about things, and he obviously cares having been at the club a long time which is why he's probably our stand out performer more often than not. If they wanted my opinions or any other fans opinions about the manager and whats happening at the club it would probably make much more grim reading than Carlos' comments have.

I Cant believe what i am reading that some players are taking advantage of PJ "nice Approach, is it not the supporters that contribute to the over paid players salays!!! .May be its not all PJs fault apart form the fact that he should know his players hunger before he approaches them. " I think we as players take advantage of the situation and not perform in the way that we play " thats coming from the Club Captain that to me is a discrace, you are the leader of this football club that we the supporters work hard to aford to come and watch players that thay are taking advantage of good nature. Some of these players are not giving the club 100 % and it can be seen. Roy Keane came across the same problem under his tenner. Perhaps a performance related idea should be introduced then you would see a different team in blue. moan over for now.
