McCarthy: Youngsters Will Get Their Chance
Thursday, 8th Nov 2012 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says young players will get their chance under his management at Town - if they show they’re good enough to be included ahead of the club’s more senior professionals and when the time is right.

Luke Hyam and Josh Carson were omitted from Saturday’s team at Birmingham having been in the side the previous week, but McCarthy believes that was necessary to ensure the victory at St Andrew’s

He says that throughout his time as a manager he has given youngsters — including those recruited from non-league — their chance, but that the visit to St Andrew’s wasn’t the right moment.

Asked whether he was a manager willing to give young player first team opportunities, he said: “Quite clearly not on Saturday as I got them out of the team and put the hard-nosed professionals in, but it was essential, that.

“If they’re good enough, I’ll play them, without any doubt. I have a history of playing young players and untried players, such as Michael Kightly.

"He cost £25,000 from Grays. He’s at Stoke now plying his trade and cost £3 million from Wolves. Yes, I do, but at the right time.”

Would be great to have Youth and enthusiasm back into our side - I do feel we have an issue with playing 2 types of teams - Height or Pace - In McCarthy we trust - hopefully he will sort the mess out! Get The new scouts in and scower the lower league's and non league for talent!!!

We're a better team with the youngsters playing!

I honestly can't wait for Henderson, Wellens and Reo-Coker to bog off!

Would rather see Luke Hyam in the team rather than Reo Coker who seems to be a long way off being fully match fit.

thats not a common occurrence, i agreed with every post above me. Wouldnt it be great to watch our team with a couple of skilful flair players from abroad and the majority made up from our youth system. I know for 0ne, i could accept indifferent and inconsistent performances if it was from committed enthusiastic youngsters learning their trade, as opposed to consistent rubbish from players who should know better, game in, game out.....COYB

who cares, we just want a winning formula dont we. We are not in the luxurious situation of blooding youth ,or playing Hyam or Carson. Those two are not game changers are they. Good young pros ,but not exactly game changers. If in the under 21s we had a lightning quick winger , great.

Who cares who is in the team, I just want to see a few wins in the bag. I am happy to leave the team selection to MM. Hopefully unlike others before him, he knows what he is doing. Time will tell. Looking forward to Saturday. COYBs

Considering what the experienced/ senior players have offered so far, if the younger players are good enough, then they will get their chance sooner rather than later.

I would like to see more of the younger players play as should the so called senior players continue to underperform we will be dropping a level where the likes of Ronan Murray can burn centrebacks for fun.

All very well McCarthy saying playing hard nosed pros.
He needs to get rid of these pathetic loans now I have no problem with loans if they are better than what you have this lot are certainly not.

as Mick said himself "words are cheap", we'll see if he means it soon enough. I question most managers having the balls to put youth in a side near the drop

The point is the so called experienced players have not been doing the business and youngsters such as Hyam have not let anyone down, when they have played. What is our goal difference again? Would it really be any worse if we had played more youngsters? I don't think it would....Roll on the much needed shake up.....coyb

After all the loanees have gone, when they've got themselves match fit for their own clubs, who will we be left with? Unfit youngsters to complete the season.
Stop playing unfit loanees & play proper fit players, whichever club they are from. Young, old, ITFC or Not & start picking up some bloody points.

Also can anyone tell me if we are paying for Lumogo (Spelling?) when he plays for Spurs?

Hopefully Hewitt, Murray, Merriot, Lawrence, Hyam, Carson get a chance soon. Not all at the same time but we need to give them the chance. A waste really playing Ellington in the u21s when murray & merriot should be getting the games imo if they are to be our future.

Yes IrishTim, I agree with you but I still think that our problems are much deeper than a new Manager or playing old, unfit, loanees, etc. I seriously hope that I am wrong but that I doubt, very much. COYB

This is the dilemma that we find ourselves in.

Do we blood the youngsters and build for the future, knowing that mistakes will be made and points lost as a result?

Or, do we go for the 'hard nosed pros' to get us out of the mess?

If reports are true and MM is on for a big bonus for keeping us up, then it will be the latter. Look for old warhorses coming in on loan and in the Jan window. Not 'young and hungry', and hence players who may need time to develop, from the lower leagues.

And that is what is important now. It doesn't matter who we play and what style we play as long as the results start coming.

Using "hard nosed pros" hasnt worked for the last few seasons, has it bergoltblue? we need a team that plays without fear, and a few more youngsters in the side might just provide that fearless aproach. I am sick of all the excuses the mercenaries and players who dont give a hoot, we need 11 on the pitch who do give a hoot....coyb

Hard nosed professionals , i would call them many things , but last of all would be hard nosed , that remark certainly hit the funny bone , you are going to get nowhere mick if you think the team you picked last week was hard nosed . dear oh dear!

I think Micks right, if the young boys were to be put in at the wrong time it would them and the club no good and shatter their confidence.

If we werent bottom of the league and totally and utterly in the sh*t, I would agree that this season could be one to try to bleed a few of them in, it still could be, but at this moment in time, we just need points, fast!

At least the younger players would try and play with pride.
If the loan players got the chance to play for their own clubs they would be off like a shot.
Do you really think they care about ipswich or are they here to just earn money.
I remember when Glen Roader was manager at norwich and he filled his team with loan players and they got relegated and he lost his job.
Get rid of the loan players before its to late and bring in players who will care and play just for town before its to late.

What must poor Mick be thinking after the last game at palace.
I think he might be the blame though because he was saying how great a club town are and he was talking about our history and then he said we have not got a very good team.
Maybe some of the players read it and they were sulking at the palace game.
Better watch what you say in the future Mick.
