O'Brien Linked With Loan
Monday, 24th Dec 2012 09:59

Town and Huddersfield are reported to be keen to take Vancouver Whitecaps central defender Andy O’Brien on loan during the MLS off-season. The 33-year-old is currently training with his former club Bolton Wanderers.

The 6ft 3in tall centre-half is well-known to Blues boss Mick McCarthy having played for him during his time in charge of the Republic of Ireland and was a member of his squad at the 2002 World Cup.

Harrogate-born O’Brien was a youth player with Leeds but began his senior career with Bradford, subsequently appearing for Newcastle, Portsmouth, Bolton and Leeds before moving to his current Canadian club in August.

O’Brien was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues in January but then-manager Paul Jewell — the centre-half’s boss during his time at Bradford - dismissed the links.

Agree Maysixth all these loans are making things a bit of a mess I feel, surely January is the time to get a bit of structure to the squad instead of all thse coming and goings. O'Brien could be solid enough but has never been blessed with pace which could prove a problem, I feel he is too similar to Higginbotham and this isn't the kind of defender we need in my opinion because our defence may look leggy. Smith and Chambers seem to have formed a decent understanding so it might not be wise to disrupt that.

I reckon the centre back situation will be difficult to resolve. With Smith & Chambers now playing well, Higginbotham may not want to extend his own loan period as he wants games, and same will apply to any incoming loanees.

no thanks, old pointless signing even if just a loan - more of a liability than we already have

Agree with Edmunds5. January is the time to impose a bit if stability, even if it means not bringing anyone new in. Lets stick to this plan of staying up (face it, we just won't get into the top 6 this year) and then rethink in the summer. We do need cover at cb, but even Ainsley would do me for a couple of games. Orr also looks like he has the build and the game to move inside if needed..?

I'd prefer a permanent signing too...oh and someone who isn't absolutely woeful like Andy O'Brien would be nice!

if MM thinks that LC and TS are his chosen back two (as many fans have been crying out for) then all we need is a back up to cover those two when Higginbottom goes back to Stoke. Assuming DH isnt going to sign, which it doesnt look like he will, then this isnt a bad option to see us through until the end of the window when hopefully permanent reinforcements will be in place ...... bare in mind the MLS preseason starts end of feb / start of march, so at most we might have him for 8 or so weeks as cover......
he probabaly costs very little too.......

I take the point about Orr moving in, but if Hewitt has any injury issues again were back to a bare bones back 4 with Carlos, Orr, cressy and one other...... I know we now have Tyrone Mings, who looks like a potential option, but if chambers & Orr got injured, we would have hewitt, Smith, Mings, Creswell at the back, with an average age of about 20, which could be a potential nightmare if we are under the cosh......

Why o Why are we just keeping players fit for other clubs!! I am sure this is just press speculation, I hope it is. We need to build a solid side, permanent signings please, lets move forward no more loanees.

Same old story if true which I hopefully doubt.MM has started to mention loans;but this would only be short term in view of age and overseas commitment;so dont want us going down this well trodden road again.
Like honesty with Kouruma, also sending Ellington out on loan, who is also not good enough for us
As for Scotland again right to get rid in view of age,and has had plenty of chance in past unlike Moshni who hasn't.

Will be looking for long-term signings come January. PJ's policy of signing a) lots of loans and b) lots of injury prone has-been's - as predicted by many - didn't work and has left us in a complete mess.

Ah I thought he looked familiar, I'd hope he's half decent in the air. This must mean Higginbotham is on the way out?

Zubar and Stearman are pants but Ebanks Blake a bit better but will require too much money. No to any of the Womves old boys except Doyle!!

Smith and Chambers are not a great partnership, we need another CB and Higginbotham or Obrien are not the answer.. Scott Dann or similar ability would suit : /

Hope he has got control of this. He was a good defender but I don't know about now. As a temporary measure would be a sensible option if not too expensive.
