Higginbotham Leaving Town Monday, 31st Dec 2012 14:20 On-loan defender Danny Higginbotham will not now be extending his stay with the Blues after interest from another club, manager Mick McCarthy has revealed. The 34-year-old Stoke centre-half had been on the verge of extending his time with the Blues until the end of the season.
McCarthy says that the agreement was on the proviso that another offer closer to Higginbotham's home and where he might play more regularly wasn't on the table: “That was on the basis that it ended on the 29th and that if something better for him, geographically and where he’d be playing, came in, he’d go with my blessing as he’s done well for me. There’s nothing that I can do about that because he’s on loan."
The Town boss, who confirmed that he will be looking for a replacement, says the other club have offered a loan with a view to a permanent deal: “There’s a potential loan with a view to a contract for another 12 months.”
McCarthy has no new injuries ahead of the New Year's Day game at home to Brighton and may well stick with the same XI for the sixth game running.

Perhaps this means we are getting Stearman?

Didn't rate Higginbotham as a solid center half but was good for back up. I'm hearing though that we've already agreed a fee to sign Campbell permanently? I don't know if it's true or not, but would be great if it was.

Not quite up to anymore I'm afraid. Thanks and all the best.

However folks, whatever you think of DH we do need centre half cover ASAP. Injury to Tommy or Chambers would leave us a bit stretched at CH

Given his age I am not disappointed with this, as I feel we now will avoid the dreaded drop and we now need to start building for the future. At 34, he surely would not have been part of any longer term plans under Mick. January will be very interesting with other loanee/short term contracts ending, principally DJ later this week. I can't wait to see who Mick brings in as it will give a strong pointer to the way he wants to take us forward, with the real rebuilding surely being left to the summer. Like all supporters, we can only hope that his targets do not get scuppered once he manages to gets them to the club. Whilst I am confident Mick will be realistic in his targets and what we can afford in terms of fees, and more importantly wages, I do enter these transfer windows with more than a little dread, given what has gone on previously (mentioning no names). We can only hope Mick is not let down and one month from now we will still all be happy and looking forwards with confidence. PS: If he wants to keep the key players who are out of contract in a few months, this needs to be even equal prirority.

Eco other comments on here already. He was only going to be a back up atm so he will be looking for some more regular football. Would like to see a more commanding centre half brought in on a permenant deal anyhow to compete for a regular spot alongside either Smith or Chambers. Stearman a good shout although will demand a large fee.

Thanks for your effort. The way forward however is a new centre half 26 roughly with experience to add to a good partnership we have going .

Yeah he did ok for a few games and steadied the defensive ship somewhat but saying that had 1 or 2 'dodgy' games at the end when he started, have to say I think his best days are behind him but did a job. All the best on where ever he goes next.

Must admit was surprised he was offered extended loan as his best days look long gone. However he is a good pro and wish him all the best.

Cheers Danny. Came in and tightened things up a bit, but eventually tailed off and made a few mistakes. Good back up, but not too worried about this, as long as we get a replacement in early doors.

He put lead in our defensive pencil. Don't forget what a shambles we were in before he turned up... DH had his off days but we needed him - and probably, most importantly, working the drills in training.... A true pro.

better for DH and us in the long run. He should look for a decent club that will play him if he really wants to carry on his career in the game. Needs to leave Stoke aswell

He'll get games at Port Vale, but he would have had a few more at Portman Road if he had an occasional shave.
