McCarthy Hoping for Busy January
Wednesday, 2nd Jan 2013 14:47

Manager Mick McCarthy says he’s hoping for a busy January transfer window as he looks to add to his squad. Striker DJ Campbell is his top target, while the Blues boss has previously said he wants to keep all of his remaining loanees.

McCarthy told the club site: “I’m hoping it will be a busy January and I’m certainly looking to get some reinforcements in.

“The lads we’ve got here are great and have done very well recently but I think we need more to sustain our league position.

“We’ve got a few lads coming to the end of their loan deals, with DJ having gone back to QPR.

“I’d like to keep DJ and I’ll be speaking to Harry but, at the same time, he’s a QPR player so any deal will be down to them first and foremost.”

If Campbell doesn't return to Portman Road McCarthy has said he will look for an alternative new striker, while a replacement for central defender Danny Higginbotham, who has joined Sheffield United, is another priority.

Meanwhile, fringe players such as Jason Scotland, who is interesting League One Preston, could move on.

Come on Mick! Lets see if we can keep Campbell and make some shrewd additions at CB, on the wing and at full back.

I really do believe in what Mick is doing at the club; if he makes the sort of influence that he has had on the team in the transfer market, then we'll be on to a winner.

Hopefully those Wolves scouts will come in handy!

he has done a fantastic job with the 'lot ' he inherited and hands pretty much tied
This is when he can show his real value - I totally believe MM and TC are a great duo for the club and will take us forward Long Term - 7 points from last 4 games vs 7 points from 13 - take your pick - COYB !!!

In total agreement with the other posters here. This is where MM & TC can really show their worth!! DJ Campbell has to be a priority. Remember, that we already have Elliot Hewitt to come in. I wouldn't be averse to Stearman either!! That would be an awesome selection to have at right back. I think we could also do with a solid GK. . . .

My only concern . . . Clegg!!

Striker: Preferably DJ Campbell but if not Ebanks-Blake
Midfield: Both Matt Ritchie and Alan Judge
Defence: Stearman and Zubar (both can play CB and RB)

This will be interesting. IMO we need a bit more strength in depth and greater pace and creativity. Personally I would let Henderson and NRC go and focus on getting better replacements for both (I don't rate either of them so it shouldn't be that hard). Another permanent Cb would be great and add to competition and keep Orr if we can as I think he has done enough (and is infinitely better than alleged target Zubar who is shocking). None of our strikers look great but then the service they get is poor so key for me is getting another decent winger to help Martin out (right wing?) and a pacey creative midfielder with a goal threat to play ahead of Hyam or N'Daw.

We're two days into the transfer window and he's done nothing. Needs to get his finger our or, once again, we'll be a LAUGHING STOCK.

Oh well now we shall see if the usual problem of "missing out on our targets" rears its head again. Over to u Mr Clegg !!

Interesting to see if MM any better than his mate PJ who talked a lot about getting players in, which didn't materialise.
First time on Saturday when didn't agree with him 100%.After talking about tiredness during heavy holiday period of games, kept same side and afterwards admitted that it played a part.
Also cant understand why he played Reo-Coker and talks about wanting him to stay.I have yet to see him have a decent game.He strolls around pointing and instructing his fellow players, and when he frequently receives the ball, either passes it back to colleague whos just given him the ball,or passes sideways or backwards;rarely passes forward or attacks opposition;surely Luke Hyam is a better prospect?

Reo-Coker must leave. Brings nothing to the team.Hopefully DJ stays. Correction come's back. Centre back badly needed. Would keep Henderson cause if we start chopping keepers again will be a recepie for disaster. Reckon we should look at pope at portvale & Mcgoldrick at coventry as long term options to boost our attack.

Reo-Coker must stay he is the only midfielder we have who has the vision to open up a team. Was our best player yesterday.

I am hoping that we will do all we can to get DJ back here but he needs to be at the right price for us not just QPR.

Also just got wind of Graham Dorrans being told he can find a new club by WBA. Could be worth a look at a loan with a view to permanent or even buying him out right? Would be an excellent addition to our midfield at this level i reckon. And we can free up some wages for that by not keeping NRC perhaps...

In mick we trust.

oldblustu he didn't open up anything yesterday. Played ten yard sideways or back passes all afternoon and rarely ventured out of the centre circle. Agree with Irishtim

The whole team wasn't very good Saturday everyone looked knackered - NRC did very well at Charlton when we were under the most pressure!! He was a very steady head where before we would have crumbled - I think he will be ok and should get better as when he came he had no fitness

It's irrelevant what strikers we have if we do not have any creative midfielders with pace & guile. Saturday was a prime example with (2) defensive midfelders ( at home!!!!) in N'Daw & NRC coupled with Edwards going backwards & Martin the only one showing any idea where the goal was.
If we cannot attract any quality in M/F then why not push Cresswell forward & use Hewitt. I do not think that our defence is as bad as it is made out, it is just that they are under constant pressure because the M/F is weak. Get that sussed & we will score more goals than we concede.
Ease up wage bill & get shot of N'Daw/NRC/Henderson (at fault with all 3 goals on Sat.)
Hurry up back the forgotten man Paul Taylor

If I was in Mick's shoes I wouldn't make any loan signings in Jan but start making the permanent signings he needs for next season. My priority would be 2 strikers and one of those would be a target man.

As much as i really wanted mick to be our manager when he joined, I didn't know how any one could turn the mess around until January. He has done brilliantly and we should be proud of what him and the majority of the players did. I feel that this could be a really exciting transfer window and a chance for Marcus Evans to show his worth aswell.

The only thing that NRC could open up is another packet of biscuits - Slow , fat and way past his prime - Get rid Reo Joker - I know football is all about opinions but not quite sure if I was watching same game as Oldbluestu yesterday

IMO MM and TC have been great for Ipswich and there's a real feeling of optimism.
I agree that its now that MM will show just how good he is at analysing the team he has inherited and how to build on it. If we can get the spine right we can't go far wrong. I hope DJ comes back but my main concern is the lack of leadership on the pitch and the midfield four who neither seem to protect the back four or support the front two with any consistency? Would love to see a JIm Magilton and Matt Holland style partnership which gave creativity, leadership and goals! Hard to find yes but I've every confidence in him to deliver this Jan despite the likely lack of funds available.

I really hope Reo-Coker never plays again he hasn't had 1 game since we signed him and every time he plays we get hammered! I really hope we sign DJ but just pray he won't turn out to be a Bullard if he signs permanently!
