Pitch Currently Under Cover and Playable
Wednesday, 16th Jan 2013 16:32

Town say the Portman Road pitch is currently playable despite the recent weather, the protective tent having been erected on Friday. With further snow expected before Saturday’s home game against Barnsley, the club are continuing to monitor the situation.

Head groundsman Ben Connell told the club site: “The pitch is fine and as we stand at the moment, we will be OK.

“The covers have been up since Friday and we have been building temperatures into the ground.

“We dealt with freezing temperatures, well below zero last night [-7], and we will keep the tent in place until Saturday morning.

“The temperatures are not going to be too cold for Saturday but there is a lot of snow forecast and that is where the main concern is.

"There is a bigger picture than just the pitch if there is snow around other areas of the stadium.

“We will be monitoring the weather closely and have got plans in place, but there is only so much you can do until the snow falls and a lot will depend on how much falls and when.”

Score when it's Snowing"

It's not the club, it's the ref who will call it off at 2:45 on Saturday.....

That's unless the police don't get there first when an inch of snow falls somewhere in Yorkshire!

I just hope that they take into account the actual snowfall upto Friday night AND any forecast for Saturday to make an early decision rather than end up with the farces we had against Leicester (even though we won, the 2nd half especially was a joke), Middlesbrough last season and the late Boxing Day call-off against Watford which was never going to happen according to reports from within the ground staff.

I guess all I am asking for is consideration for the fans, if it looks more likely to not go ahead than a slim chance it will, call it off early, save the fans a wasted journey, money and time, then they can go and do something else with their Saturday and not be grumbling about getting there and having to turn around to go back.

If the forecast turns out to be correct, then this game is in serious doubt. As someone who travels a reasonable distance to the game, I hope they make a prompt decision if the game is in doubt. We don't want another Watford, or worst still Middlesboro!

Snow is forecast Friday and Saturday with a maximum temperature of 1C, so it's not looking good. We're not in either of the cups, so it would seem sensible to me to postpone it early with the travelling fans in mind and rearrange for another date.

Please make an early correct decision. I travel 180miles each way don't want to turn around at Newmarket or worse but have a feeling........

It's not always the pitch that calls a game off, it's the roads from Yorkshire to here and the streets outside being a health and safety risk at times but we have good facilities so i'm sure we'll be ok come saturday!

I agree with a lot of the posts, make an early correct decision. We travel over 120 miles each way and don't want to be getting to the ground to find out the game is off......

If only authorities were reading this we might get a sensible early decision for once. Mine's a 450 mile round trip and past record on making their mind up isn't good!

I hope all concerned make the right decision early. Forget the travelling fans, I have to walk down Bishops Hill, have a few beers then try to walk back up the hill. Not easy at the best of times, let alone snow and ice. AND I am still peeeed at how the club handle the Middlesboro debacle.

Agree with most of above posts and really hope for an early decision.....but Im a realist.
Its a fact that nowadays, fans are low down the list of priorities and it will doubtless be a last minute decision if the game is called off.

i'm sure it is the clubs interest for a late cancellation or called off after 30 mins, ticket sales and all that. The fans dont matter, like others i do a 50 mile round trip. Hopefully Radio suffolk wont be called off
