Town Exit Suffolk Premier Cup
Wednesday, 6th Mar 2013 22:08

A young Town reserves side were knocked out of the Suffolk Premier Cup at the semi-final stage after losing 1-0 to Lowestoft at Kirkley and Pakefield's Walmer Road ground. Michael Frew netted the game's only goal late on.

Josh Carson was the only player in Town's side with more than a few minutes' first team experience, while new managing directors Ian Milne and Jonathan Symonds were both in attendance.

Lowestoft came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute when one-time Town trialist Joe Francis got the better of Kyle Hammond, but he hit his left-foot shot across Michael Crowe and just wide of the far post.

Five minutes later Crowe was forced to make a good block at his near post to deny Josh Dawkin after a good ball from Stuart Ainsley, older brother of Jack and a former Town youngster.

Ex-Norwich City midfielder and one-time Town schoolboy Robert Eagle lobbed a bouncing ball wide soon after, before Andrew Fisk picked up the game's first yellow card for a foul on Byron Lawrence.

Another former Town man Scott Mitchell headed straight at Crowe from a left-wing cross early in the second half, before Josh Dawkin fired wide when he should have put the Trawler Boys ahead soon after.

Cormac Burke curled a freekick wide in a rare foray forward for Mark Kennedy's Town side with 20 minutes remaining.

Michael Frew secured Lowestoft's passage through to the final - where they will meet either Bury Town or Leiston who meet at Needham Market's Blooomfields next Tuesday - with nine minutes remaining.

Frew latched onto former Town U18 skipper Curtley Williams's ball over the top and took his shot early from 25 yards, leaving Crowe with no chance.

Town couldn't create a decent opening in the remaining minutes and in truth, they failed to test Andy Plummer, yet another Playford Road alumnus, in the Lowestoft goal all night.

Schoolboy Matt Clarke, who played at centre-half alongside an unsteady Omar Sowunmi, was probably the pick of Town side, while Gunnar Thorsteinsson battled well in midfield. Carson was quiet throughout.

Town: Crowe, Hammond, Leddy, Thorsteinsson, Sowunmi, Clarke, Burke (Winter 71), Carson, Marriott (Galvin 85), Lawrence, Timlin. Unused: Marsden, Berkane, Robinson.

brilliant, making history, knocked out twice, hows about finding another ineligible player to get us back in again n getting beaten another time.

Never mind, at-least the youngster got a game

Sorry to hear that Josh didn't make an impact–with Lee Martin's suspension, this should be his chance to get in the first team and impress MM.

In fairness, he's done nothing to get in the first team

Can see Carson being one of the summer casualties. Has failed to build on a promising start to his Town career.

Oh dear wat has happened to the bents, wickhams and rhodes's that we used to make in our youth/reserves squads, our youth is now crap , need to sort it out in my mind or our future could be bleak , I know we can sign players but can't just rely on that we're not Madrid but still they have many years to go, could turn out good, but don't look like it if we lose to lowerstoft, they are so low down its unreal lol

With Klug back in charge and the upgrades to the youth facilities for category 2 status I think the future will be bright for our academy, but as is always the case with these things it will take time to show

Unlucky for this young team not to win, but it's not exactly anything to start worrying about.

McCarthy and Evans need to go, no hope for the future. I though Bryan Klug was meant to be good? Pfft.

I'm so disappointed. This really was Josh Carson's opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the first team squad, but instead, he's given McCarthy a greater reason to get rid of him in the summer. What an absolute shame. He looked such a talented youngster, with the world at his feet, but too much partying, too much Twitter, too much money and a lack of commitment to a career as a professional football only seems to have derailed him.

Think even Stevie Wonder could see this result coming.

Footyblue only one person responsible for josh cartons career decline and that's himself. Look at Luke Hyam who was messed around too, where is he now. The difference isn't ability it's how you apply yourself

ITFC did the right thing, in sending a youth team out to play what is probably the second strongest team in the County. Having already been knocked out by Felixstowe & Walton, it would have been a hollow victory if we had gone on to win the Competition.

footyblue your comment is the only comment on this blog with any substance. Were any of you at the match??????????????? I doubt it. Get behind these guys, the team selection is not the fault of the players. The opposition had more senior players, we had a very young squad out and inexperience showed. Josh Carson worked hard throughout the game and never gave the ball away. bluelady get it right, the name is Carson and not carton.............are you an Town fan at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think some people know how good Lowersoft are, that ryman league is a very decent standerd with good players init . When i saw the town line up i wasnt expecting a win . i thought it was going to be more then 1-0 if im honest . Youve got to remember Lowersoft would of had out many of experience players . If anything its a good test for the youngsters and let them see that there is still a long way to go as i wouldnt be at all surprised if in a few years time some of this lot playing for Ipswich last night will be playing ryman level .
