McGoldrick Set to Return to Forest
Thursday, 4th Apr 2013 14:28

Striker David McGoldrick will return to Nottingham Forest after Saturday’s game at Derby with his loan having come to an end. The 25-year-old had been understood to be with the Blues until the end of the season — at which point he is expected to sign a two-year deal — but is in fact only on a 93-day loan.

Manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that the four-goal frontman will be on his way back to the City Ground after the weekend: “The loan deal was for 93 days and we took him until the Derby game.

“He’s a really good player and before anybody asks me why we didn’t sign him, he couldn’t have three registrations for one club in any season.

“He’d been registered with Forest and he’d been registered with Coventry as a window-to-window loan and you can’t have three.

“We would have signed him permanently at the time, but we couldn’t so we had to take him on an emergency loan, so it was either miss him for five games at the start of the loan or five at the end.”

Both club and player have stated that he will sign a two-year permanent deal with the Blues on July 1st, but McCarthy says that’s not yet formalised: “We can’t do anything about that, it’s one of those things.

“We took him on loan for 93 days, there have been talks with him because we agreed to take him and give him a contract, providing we stay in the Championship, and that [Town's divisional status] is not sorted yet.”

The Blues boss says McGoldrick couldn’t sign a pre-contract agreement: “He can’t sign one, that’s illegal. You can’t do that.

“We’ve discussed it with him and he wants to stay, but until he comes out of contract we can’t do anything about it. There’s no point in me trying to hide away from that fact because everybody knows.

“Has he loved it here, has he liked it? Does he want to stay? [If we] stay in the league, I think he does. He’s been loved here by everybody and he’s enjoyed his football, so we’ll see.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy confirmed that midfielder Jay Tabb has had his loan from Reading extended until the end of the season: ”That’s to the end of the season. They’ve got a recall on it, which suits everybody. They’ll only recall him if they want to play him.

“Tabby’s doing great for us, but if they wanted to play him in the Premier League I couldn’t deny him that anyway. But I don’t think that’s going to happen. He’s loving it and he wants to play.”

Buckieblue - he can't sign as he's already played for two clubs those season, it says that in the article. The Zaha story isn't comparable.

McGoldrick will be a big miss. Not sure why a 3 month loan rather than end of season. Did Davies sign McGoldrick for Forest? Hope he doesn't you turn. I think he's got a big season here next year.

WTF!!!????

Disasterous!!!

One of our biggest problems this season has been scoring goals.

First of all we let our leading goalscorer go after his loan ended (wonder how Campbell feels on the Blackburn bench now?!) and now we have to let McGoldrick go!! Will he really come back in the summer?

Not so sure, the summer is a long way off and he certainly won't be coming if our 1st game of next season is at home to Yeovil!!!!

I'm not disputing the facts, we knew he couldnt sign permanently due to the 3 club rule.

But dont make out he's here for the rest of the season when in fact he's leaving at the worst possible time with 5 games left!!!

For everyone on here saying no big deal, Chopra etc have hardly been banging them in all season.

I'm worried now, really really worried. Where the hell are the goals going to come from?

Please, someone out there give me an answer as whichever I look at this, it's is a complete shambles.

Well if we don't score on Saturday a good chance with McGoldrick gone thereafter our attack will (like DJ Campbell) will suffer again, just hope we don't lose because we all know what happened after Campbell went.
As mentioned these loans 'until the end of the season' are not worth the paper there written on, Billy Davies wants him back to strengthen their assault on the play-offs or maybe automatic spot, all we've done is sharpen him up to play for his parent club. Less of this next season please and actually get some players on OUR books!!

Oh dear this is bad news what are they playing at saying he's here till the end of the season.
Ridiculous!! Is McLean here For the duration of the season then?!!
I thought we can stay up now I'm not so sure, who else can score the goals up front.
Let's hope chops can be the hero! McLean needs a chance now! Hope he can shine too :-((

TimmyH, as usual your spot on!

I think you talk a great deal of sense, Billy Davies and McGoldrick have been sucessfull before,Forect are pushing for promotion and the thing that does it for me is at no point were we told it was 83 day loan only, the club made it clear, loan till end of season with view to signing permanent.

This is the problem with loans, if their crap we just send them back, if they play, we can't compete with whoever comes in for them and they go anyway!!

I'm really angry and disapointed, yet again the club have shot themselves in the foot and it could cost us a place in this league!!

Don't think it's a question of Davies wanting him back necessarily, the 93 days are up and the rules state we can't keep him any longer simple as that.

Wouldn't touch McLean with a ten foot barge pole.

John can't disagree with you mate, but why in that case didnt the club say that when they signed him?

People are dillusional if they think McLean is going to keep us up!! Crazy!!

Hi Talbs - yeah agree the club partly to blame on this and MM on releasing Scotland to Barnsley. I'm fed up to the back teeth with these loans - they're just a temporary solution ( with a minority of them being worthwhile) and as you've said have we ever signed any of them that had done well other than Jimmy Bullard and we all know what happened there.

What worries me is the psychological aspect of an offensive player going at a crucial time who can score, hold the line and bring other players into play - I still think our defense is organised and strong enough to see us over the finish line but this doesn't help .

By the way is he a free agent next season or does he have a parent club at present?

Talbs77,yes it is a total shambles, but if you look at the complete picture before, and after the arrival of MM and TC, its clear our new managerial team are moving the club in the right direction.I've said before, and i'll say it again, why MM decided to come on board is beyond me ,but I'm very grateful he did.Let us all give MM and TC time to sort out our club .God, they need it after what Jewel and Keane left behind on the pitch.Players come, and go as we've witnessed, but MM and TC have already shown they more often than not get the best out of limited resources. We will be playing championship football next season no doubt about it.

@warktheline - £1 million bonus for keeping us up maybe?

Hiya TimmyH, nice to talk to ya mate.

I couldnt agree more, the loan system hasnt worked for town for, what at least 2 years now.

Could less loans have resulted in, say, 3 permanent signings, I know which option I'd choose.

I still hope (and it is hope now I have calmed down a tad) that, ironically after the start of the season, the defence will save us from trouble.

But look at the league!!! Look at the form teams, all below us!!

Are Posh/Wolves etc letting their main striker go at squeaky bum time ?!!!!

Its a massive psychological blow for everyone, no getting away from that.

As mentioned 6 0-0's should do it - although I'm really don't think this will happen against Mick Philpott County on Saturday.

TimmyH,you're right,MM has got to be on a huge bonus for keeping us up.After what he took on he deserves it.We have one of the best managers in the championship, that's why we are staying up.

From a public relations point of view another massive own goal by those in charge at Portman Road!

Gives the impression, once again, that those in charge (Not MM) really have no idea what they are doing!!

There might be a couple of Blackburn strikers looking for a championship club next season who we could have a look at.

For the avoidance of any doubt I've re-read MM's notes in the Barnsley programme (i know i should get a life!) and I quote "he's with us on loan but will become our player in the summer". That sounded like a done deal to me, I assume the fly in the ointment now is the sacking of McLeish (who, presumably, considered him surplus) and Davies appointment (who may not). Still doesnt explain the fact that the club stated he was here until May on the day of his signing.

More lies from our dishonest club, and McCarthy is complicit in those lies. Disgusted.

I just want to clarify my above comments that in no way am I trying to criticise MM.

What he has already acheived in getting us where we are now has been magnificent, what he has achieved in turning the worst defence in the league into one of the best, is a miracle.

Was he aware of the loan agreement? Would he have said what he did when signing McGoldrick, pretty much making out it was a done deal at the end of the season, if he knew what has transpired?

Will he eventually feel the inability to sign the players he wants to challenge for promotion (if we stay up) wont be supported by ME, result in him leaving the club?

I dont know the answers to any of the above but I just wanted to make it clear I dont blame MM, I think he's one of the best managers in this league by a country mile and we are very very lucky to have him.
